US OPEN

Welcome to Flushing Meadows, New York, for the season's final Grand Slam. The first three Slams have seen 3 different winners - will we have another new Grand Slam winner here in New York? With not long to go until the Year End Championships, this tournament could be crucial in people's campaigns for the Top 8.

The Favourites

#2 Gisela Dulko - She just won New Haven and so is the in-form player heading into the Open. She also reached the QF at Montreal so is playing well right now.

#4 Ioana-Raluca Olaru - She reached the QF in New Haven this week, but won the Tier I title in Montreal the week before. She finished joint #2 in the US Series Race, and will be looking to do well here to make use of her 50% points bonus.

#10 Nathalie Dechy - An impressive hardcourt season, reaching finals in Los Angeles and New Haven, as well as the QF in Montreal. A real dangerous player when she is on. Like Dechy, she finished joint #2 in the US Series Race, and will be looking to do well here to make use of her 50% points bonus.

#14 Jelena Jankovic - Winner of the US Series Race due to title wins in Stanford and LA, Jankovic is definitely a huge threat here in New York. She lost early in Montrel, but seemed to be back on track with a decent showing in New Haven. With a 100% points bonus, she will be looking to go deep.

The Contenders

#3 Nicole Vaidisova - She has had a fairly modest run-up to this tournament, with a QF in Stanford and a SF in Montreal, but she definitely has the game, and knows what it takes to win a Slam.

#28 Iveta Benesova - a relative newcomer to the tour, Benesova has been impressive, reaching consecutive semis at Montreal and New Haven. If he can make a few minor changes, she can definitely be challenging for the title here.

The Dark Horses

#1 Elena Dementieva - it seems weird to only have the #1 as a "dark horse" but she hasn't made a single QF in the 4 warmup events for the Open. However, the #1 should never be discounted and is always a huge threat to whoever she plays.

#13 Dinara Safina - Safina can toruble the top players, and made the SF in both LA and Montreal. She could be one to watch, altough she lost early in New Haven.

#20 Maria-Emilia Salerni - she had a great week last week, and only didn't come away the winner due to a cointoss, so she can be a factor here this tournament too.

You don't suck - you have been close many times. Just in a bit of a slump at the moment, but you are still top 8 so that's pretty good. It'snot easy with all these new players on the scene, but keep going and you will probably still qualify for they YEC

Serena is doubting

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2004/20040901/sp5.jpg

Serena Williams arrives in Flushing Meadows with no confidence, her moral is just not there. She feels the pressure of the media, the fans and her entourage who are all expecting her to do well in all tournaments constantly. Serena has badly failed to have any kind of good results during the hard court season which isn't a good sign for the last Grand Slam of the year as it begins in only three days.

Serena Williams said after her New Heaven first round defeat to the up and coming star of the OWTT, Caroline Wozniacki, "I just lack a bit of motivation these last weeks. I keep trying, beeing defensive, beeing agressive, beeing not too agressive and not too defensive, nothing works out in my favor." Serena Williams really is trying to create new things with her game, we see it on court, but it just isn't succesful.

Many young players arrived on tour lately and they are showing they could become dominating players really soon, Serena spoke about it, "I think it's great for the tour to have some new faces, but I find it sad that, for the amjority of them, their game brings nothing new to the Tour, ball bashing is not tennis to me."

Serena Williams hopes beeing a part of the YEC but while she spoke about it, she didn't gave us the impression she really believed she would be there, she said "Well it would be great, but you know there is so much on talent on this tour... It would be fun to confirm myself I'm a part of the elite on this tour but well... we'll see."

Alize Cornet today wrote an open letter to Serena to fire her up after she announced retirement plans.

My Dearest Serenakins (MA Bitching Hons.),

I heard today that you were retiring to spend more time playing bingo with Lindsay Davenport. I admit I was upset and concerned about his because it means we have never played, and therefore I have never beaten you. This would not be right. The correct way to hand over the Queen Bitch title is for the new Queen to double bagel the old one. Read the bitches bible sister!

I mean I suppose you could quit if you really wanted to. Like a looser, I suppose you are a looser really. Champions don't quit. By quitting you confirm what I've always known - you are a looser, QED. On the bright side you will be able to watch me win all the time in high definition - I hear they have these in old people's homes now. I promise I will wear the socks you knitt me (just not in public).

You know there comes a time when ladies can't compete with youth and they start to loose control of bodily functions and have to wear diapers again. I gather from your retirement that you must be at this stage. Having to wait a whole 10 minutes between bathroom breaks each set, while has-beens like Peer beat you, must be getting harder and harder.

Good luck in your retirment home,

Lots of love, your R16 opponent
xXx

Jessica Moore: Goodbye's the Saddest Word

http://www.tennisaustralia.com.au/pages/image.aspx?assetid=RDM39477.7385218519http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/image/gallery/IO_30768_gallery.JPG
From elation to despair...Jessica Moore looks set to retire, or does she?

New York, USA - The savvy, sazzy and sophisticated World No.15 is set to bid adieu to the OWTT circuit here this week. In what will be an emotional tournament for the young Jessica Moore, she is hoping to give her fans something to cheer about at the year's final Grand Slam.

Having burst onto the scene as a talented 17 year old in Sydney, Australia, Moore reached a career high OWTT Singles Ranking of 14 mid year. She performed consistently well, reaching 2 semi and 3 quarter finals during her debut year. However, it was in doubles that Moore really excelled. Teaming with fellow newcomer, Nicole Vaidisova, the young duo captured their first title together in just their second tournament, the Australian Open. The pair went on to claim another two prestigous OWTT doubles events, before the OWTT board scrapped the doubles competition. It was a move that saw the pair denied of ever becoming World No.1.

''I have very much enjoyed my time on the OWTT Circuit. I have met many new friends that I will keep in contact with for the rest of my life. Thank you so very much to these special people. I have also met many mean and nasty people, but I hope to put these differences aside once I put down my racquet for good. Good luck to everyone in the future,'' Moore said during a post match press conference in New Haven.

She continued, ''I no longer have the fight and the desire to play top level singles competition. I am still young so I will finish my high school studies and then go on to university. That is the only way forward for me.''

This, however, leaves some unanswered questions...
1) If she no longer has the desire to play singles on the OWTT Circuit, will she attempt to get the doubles circuit going again and keep playing there?
2) She has stated over and over if she has some good results in the lead up to the US Open, she will reconsider her future plans...what happens if she does well in New York?
3) Could the OWTT players convince Moore to keep playing? She has publicly acknowledged calls for her to stay in the game...

Stay tuned as the OWTT gossipers go in for some one on one information during the tournament...
We have no promises, though, that she will stay on tour

Domachowska Rallies to Defeat Jankovic
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/590/Marta_3.jpg

Marta Domachowska, the top ranked polish player, came back from a set and 4-0 down to upset 14th seed Jelena Jankovic. In the first set neither player held until 5 all, with Jankovic doing so at love, she then broke Domachowska to win the set. In set 2 Jankovic continued to dominate her opponent, using the whole court. Up 4-0, 40-0, Jankovic started to show signs of nerves when she double faulted, giving Domachowska hope. Domachowska then started moving Jankovic around with her powerful groundstrokes, then finishing the points off at the net. Before Jankovic knew what hit her, domochowska had won the set, finishing it off with her first ace. In stark contrast to the first two sets, both players held they're first 3 service games, but this time it was Domachowska that got the first break. She then proceeded to hold at love, and finished the match with a backhand down the line winner. "I can't even describe this feeling, to be honest I was thinking of retiring after this tournament, but I've changed my mind, nothing beats the feeling of winning a match on Arthur Ashe! I play Shahar(Peer) next, she plays alot like Jelena, tracks alot of balls down, I know I'll have to be at my best to beat her!"

Sharapova Surpasses Kirilenko

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00Nd2Yo5at1Ay/340x.jpg

Maria Sharapova has made it to the Round of 16 in the US Open after defeating best friend, Maria Kirilenko. Sharapova hasn't been in great form lately but is trying to find it here. She will next face number 4 seed, Olaru.

The first set saw 4 holds of serve in a row before Sharapova took the next 4 games to take the set 6-2, comfortably. In the beginning of the second set, Sharapova seemed to have injured her wrist. She kept playing with the crowd behind but still lost the second set 6-0.

She was down 0-4 in the final set, before she made one of her "typical" comebacks, winning the last 6 games, to take the game set and match 6-2 0-6 6-4. Despite the injury, Sharapova will keep on playing and will continue to fight, as it is a grandslam and she has stated that she is not a quitter. Sharapova is now currently number 11 but is looking to improve in this department. As she wants to make the Year Ending Championship. Sharapova's highlight was making it to the semis of the Wimbledon and a final.

Bitch Fest!

Young French woman Alizé Cornet booked a round of 16 grudge match with American Serena Williams after defeating Muller to qualify and then surprising Swiss #1 Martina Hingis in straight sets, 6-1 7-5.

"Yes I'm really happy with the result I really didn't expect to do well in this tournament given my awful form of late but there might be early signs that my game has been returned by the thief that stole it. I don't want to speak too soon though; I am definitely still not 100%. In both my matches I won the 1st set easily and then faded a little in the second - that can't continue. I think that now my game may have returned we have to look at who's form has mysteriously disappeared, perhaps someone that has gone to about the semi-finals in the last two tournaments but failed to get into the R16 here. Definitely someone new on tour"

"I will now face Serena Williams in the next round - something I have wanted to do since I set foot on tour. She recently announced she might be retiring and I single-handedly and heroically convinced her not to. We started off not getting on too well, she took some of my advice the wrong way but now I can't help but have some sort of respect for her - though I try very hard not to. One must always look up to the Queen Bitch - and she finally dispatched of my arch nemesis Benesova. I hope it is a good match - I hope more that I win"

"I am sorry to hear that one of my closest friends on tour Caro did not make it through her match today. We started on the tour at the same time and I have nothing but respect for the considerable talent and she is also a very nice person. However unfortunately it appears her game has too been stolen. I urge her to report it so the tour director and the police can deal with Benesova the thief"

Serena is alive!

http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200708/r172045_647945.jpg

Serena Williams played like real garbage today! Serena is pretty lucky she got to the second round of this final GS of the year. In her first round match she was facing Iveta Benesova. Well, what the match looked like is pretty simple, Benesova was keeping balls in play while Serena was going for the big shots in each and every rally, but let me remind you that we are in first round so Serena's game was kinda rusty. Unforced errors kept coming in first set that she lost 3-6. Second set was much more neat, less unforced errors, lots of winners to win it 6-1. Final set was just up and down, a bad game and good one, Serena finally pulled it away in a tie-break, but her numerous mistakes could have sent her packing.

After the match Serena said, "Well you know, first round matches are always tough. The girl really wanted to beat me, but she still didn't have what it takes to. I was playing high risk tennis today, I gave a good show to the crowd, but I have to say I scared myself a bit by moments, my tennis is just not at its best presently and I will have to train hard if I want to make it any further."

Serena will play Alizé Cornet in the next round, when she learned it she said "I know you're all waiting for me to say something to make up a new scandal but I won't. As much as I dislike Alizé Cornet, it still remains that I do respect her game like I respect the one of all the other players, except the ball basher. I'm not gonna say anything mean about her game, she fought as much as I did to get here, so she deserves her place in second round too."

Sharapova Searching Semis

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42058000/jpg/_42058260_shara300.jpg

Maria Sharapova has caused an upset, defeating the world's number 4, Olaru in 3 sets.
Sharapova started the match by breakings serve and consolidating by holding her own serve to take the lead 2-0. Olaru got on the board by holding serve, fending off 3 break points. But then Sharapova lost her serve to love and Olaru leveled the match at 2-2. But Sharapova wasn't going to go away, as she broke back to take the lead once again at 3-2. Sharapova then won the next 3 games and won the first set 6-2.

Calling for her trainer in the set break, the trainer had a look at Sharapova's wrist, which was injured from her last match, and taped it. Sharapova then lost the second set, without winning a single game. Olaru leveled the match at 1 set a piece.

The third set saw Olaru taking the first two games, losing only 1 point, but a frustrated Sharapova never looked out of it. She was hitting the balls harder, flatter and more confident. She troubled Olaru and won the last 6 games of the match, to take the match 6-2 0-6 6-2. This amazing comeback got the crowd on their feet and a teary Olaru was cheered for her effort on the court.

Sharapova will now face number 10 seed Nathalie Dechy who earlier beat Ana Ivanovic 6-4 0-6 6-0.

:worship: Awesome match here. The first two sets contained some of the best tennis ever seen on OWTT Tour, before Domachowska really steped things up in the third set. Vaidisova will be disappointed here but she was very close to the win. Marta moves on to face Domi in the semis!

Great fighting from Alize here winnng 6 games in a row from 1-5 in the second set. Salerni was almost able to close the set out to take it to a decider, but didn't quite have enough firepower in the end. Cornet seems to save her best tennis for the big stage, and will play Sharapova in the semis

Sharapova Save to Semis

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42045000/jpg/_42045460_sharapova.jpg

Maria Sharapova has made it into the semifinals of the US open after defeating, number 10 seed Nathalie Dechy. Sharapova didn't start well at all winning only 1 out of the first 10 games. Losing the first set 0-6 and was down 1-3 in the second. But that was when Sharapova turned things around and won the next 5 games to level it at 1 set apiece. The third set was a battle at the beginning, with both players holding serve until 2-2 where Sharapova stepped it up another level winning the last 4 games to make it into another grandslam semis. Sharapova will next play French qualifier, Alize Cornet. Sharapova says that she will need to step it up for her next match but is happy about her performance so far.

Serena Williams Ends Her Career

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/2003/french_open/news/2003/06/05/serena_distraught_reut/t1_serena_ap.jpg

In a short and totally surprising press conference this morning, Serena Williams announced her retirement. The girl seemed to be sad mainly cause she would quit good friends, but tennis just didn't seem a passion for her anymore.

Serena Williams said, "I decided to end my tennis career after my yesterday's loss. This loss is definitely not the only for my retirement, I just don't have anymore fun playing tennis and the way girls are playing on this tour is getting boring and frustrating. Others can call me a quitter, I just don't care."

Serena's coach also talked a bit and said, "I had a blast coaching Serena. She's an amazing person, but results have never been what she would have want them to be, plus she was bored trying to rivalize with ball bashers."

Miss Williams also said, "I want to say I wish all the best to Shahar Peer, Lindsay Davenport and Tatiana Golovin, they deserve it soo much."

Another great win for Marta, this time over the AO Champ! Both women knew they needed to get off to a good start in today's match, and it was Domachowska who sneaked the tight first set, which seemed to leave Cibulkova completely deflated in the next set. Marta moves on to the US Open final!

Easy win for Cornet who clearly executed her tactics against those of Sharapova. Sharapova cannot afford to wait so late in her tactics to go big. Cornet has made it all the way from qualifying and now finds herself in the US Open final. Can she win that last match against Domachowska?

''I have been playing poorly for a long time now. My love for the game has waned and I am suffering from mental and physical burnout.

But I am a fighter and a true believer in the ongoing success of the OWTT Circuit. I will play out the rest of the season and then make a decision at the end of the year. So don't worry, I will be around for a while yet. I would just like to say to Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva that I have thoroughly enjoyed our matches and biffs on and off court, and I wish you both all the best for future success. The OWTT will be a worse place without you both.''

Final Countdown

After a series of 1st round losses the last place you would expect Alizé Cornet to be was in the final of one of the four biggest events on tour. But that's where she is, and she's yet to drop a set. In the Quarter Final she saw off Serena Williams and then Russian Maria Sharapova, 6-1 6-2.

"Wow, I can't believe I'm here. I didn't really have high expectations for this tournament as I’ve been in a bit of a funk recently. But now I’ve pulled myself out and am playing my best tennis. In my match against Maria I felt really good everything was working and going in. I just hope I can continue that in the final."

"I would be lying if I said I didn't want to win, everyone wants to win a grand slam. I've received a lot of support on tour, which I'm grateful for. But I'm also aware of how well my opponent is playing. Marta has taken out some very good players this tournament and is always a tough opponent. I hope it's a great match"

"I am sorry to hear that some players have announced their retirement or are considering it - particularly those ranked highest in the game. It is a great shame; competition is good. They have to realise that they cannot win everything and they should learn from their losses and take the chance to improve. Having said that it is their choice and I wish them the best of luck."

Domachowska def. (Q) Cornet
6-4 5-7 6-0

No-one would ever expected Cornet or Domachowska reaching the finals here after both players have struggled recently. Marta had more left in the tank in the third set, and she is now a Slam champ! She had a tough week the whole way through, taking out red-hot Jankovic, #6 Peer, #3 and French Open champ Vaidisova, #5 and Australian Open champ Cibulkova, and then Cornet, so one of hardest draws imaginable really! Congratulations!!

Did CT order affect result?

No - you got 1 each in first set, and the one in the second set is what kept you in it!!

SF against Cibulkova would have been determined by a CT, and you would have beaten Cornet in straight sets

Interview with Miss Caroline

Q: Can you talk about your run at the US Open?
A: Yes I can, but it will be very short like my appearance on the US Open courts. I am really disappointed about this loss. Moore was the best draw I could have had. I mean, she was one of the lowest seed I could have drawn. She hasn’t achieved a lot in her career. I really thought I was going to win this match. But I was trashed 6-2 and 6-0. It was really embarrassing.

Q: How were you playing?
A: I didn’t play my best tennis. Well, I made a lot of errors and my footwork wasn’t good at all. On another side, I am glad to loose this way. It just proves to hater that I am not a ball basher because if I was, I wouldn’t have lost 2-6 0-6.

Q: What’s wrong with your game?
A: I really don’t know. I mean, I haven’t made big changes with my tactic and you know I won Wimbledon and then, nothing. I can definitely say that it was a fluke. Maybe I put too much pressure on myself after my fairytale at Wimbledon. I wasn’t ready to have big success like this in my first tournament. However, I wouldn’t change anything. I mean, I won a Grand Slam title, it stills amazing! My slump will give me experience on Tour and I’ll try to improve my game step by step. There is a lot of ball basher here and that’s why I’ve been trashed like this in the last tournaments. Well, for the moment, like I’ve just said, I’ll take it step by step and I’ll try to have a perfect game plan against the ball basher and against everyone. It won’t take two days…it will be long but I am ready to work on it.

Q: You are showing a lot of determination…A: I know. But it will be tough to loose a lot of matches when I know I could win some with ball bashing. Well, can we change subject now?

Q: Yeah…sorry! What have you been up to during the tournament?
A: Well, I went clubbing with Serena after her loss to Alize. I needed to cheer her up. We had a lot of funs. We were the hottest chicks of the club. While we were dancing on the dance floor, a lot of men came to us. Ree and I decided they weren’t enough sexy for us. So we went to another club were we met two Jesse; McCartney and Metcalfe. We had a lot of fun while dancing in cages but the end of the night was better as Serena and Metcalfe rent a room for the night as McCartney and I did.

Q: So you had a great week here in New York!
A: God, yes! That was hot.

Q: Let’s talk about Serena’s retirement…
A: Well. I don’t know what to say. I don’t think she’ll do it and I don’t want her to do this. She has a lot of potential; she’s just in a slump right now. Well, if Serena retires from the OWTT, I hope her coach will take a new girl with him. Anyhow, Serena must stays…

Q: Well, I am not sure she will stay.
A: Shut up b*tch.

Q: …
A: Well, you can only ask me questions…

Q: Ok. What are you going to do now that the US Open is finished?
A: First of all, I’ll have to go out with Alize as she just loss the final. But she should be happy with her performance. She came out of nowhere to make the final. For sure, she would have loved to win the title, but she had a great week and I hope she’ll continue and carry her form into the next tournaments. But I’ll cheer her up tonight. We might call Serena if she wants to come with us. I mean, I hope we will have a hot night as we had this week. Maybe Jesse will be there…

Q: Do you have a crush on him?
A: Hum…no. Well, no. I mean…no! Well, he’s really hot and sexy. He’s rich and popular. He is really good in bed…no. I mean, no. I don’t have a crush on him.

Q: Ok. Well have fun tonight and good luck for your up and coming tournaments.
A: Thanks.

The Russian #1 player has right knee injury. She suffers from this injury since Wimbledon and probably she has to miss some tournaments now.

"My doctor said that I will not be able to play in the next tournament and probably my first tournamenrt after US Open will be the YEC. I need some rest because I'm tired."

Interview With US Open Champion
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/590/pry13.jpg

Q:Marta, tell us about your US Open run.

MD:Well first of all I would like to congratulate Alize(Cornet) on her amazing run, she came through the qualifying and made it all the way to the final! Back on subject, I honestly did'nt think I was gonna make it through my first round, let alone win the tournament! I was just 5 points away from losing to Jelena(Jankovic), but I kept fighting and I found a way to win. I played so much better against Shahar(Peer) I think that was the best match of my career, and that really boosted my confidence and I started to think that I'm just as good as all the other girls, if I'm playing well.

Q:How did it feel when you lifted up that trophy?

MD: Freaking amazing. There is not a better feeling then winning a grand slam, it was even more special for me, as I was contemplating retirement, but looking back it was foolish of me to even think to stop doing what I love.

Q:What did you do to celebrate?

MD:I slept. Alot. Like 15 hours(Laughs)

Q:Thanks for your time Marta, we'll talk again after your next tournament!

MD:Until then(Kisses interviewer on cheek)
