I don't understand the criticism here. Ana was the better player AND has a great amount of variety and passion on court. She can play offense AND defense now. That's all the makings of a great player to watch and root for.

Safina is not good enough to be a slam champ. She'll be a good 7-10 ranked player but not worthy of a slam. Just not special enough. Not distinctive. But I appreciated her opposition today.

Good match - not a classic, but way better than last year or the year before...

I thought it was a good match. Ana is the better player without any doubt. Some of those forehands were :eek:. Definitely brings memories of Steffi. She also was constructing points, waiting for the right moment, defending well..etc. And to think clay is not even her best surface.

and some of you guys are way too critical...it was no worse than the us open and wimbledon final last year. i personally loved it...there were great forehands and backhands from both players, some amazing drop shots from safina, safina giving ana the evil eye, safina yelling stuff in russian, it was entertaining to me.
and i loved the hugs she gave to her box...too bad sven couldnt be there. and i love her family...they seem so normal and not annoying like novaks.

Ana was so confident and played like the world number one. Great first serve and that forehand was on. Close first set and a more enjoyable final than the last few slams. Dinara played well but there is a reason why Ana is number one and Dinara is number nine and that is Ana's experience in big matches and bigger weapons. After winning this, and beating good players to do so like Patty, Jelena and Dinara, Ana will have another weapon to her serve and forehand: mental toughness.
As for Dinara, her career has gone up and down since that 2005 Paris Indoors win and I expect her to use this recent run to find the confidence to play well throughout the year and cement herself in the top ten.

Serbia, such a small country is proud to have a female and male champion all in a year, not to mention great results by Jelena Jankovic(who might win a slam herself) and Janko among many other talents. Its really impressive for Serbia to have so many players at the top and they should be really proud. So I would like to wish my neighbours a happy celebration. Well done to Ana - she played better and she held it together well out there, not much sign of the nerves or tension today.

Safina - good effort - pretty impressive in her first final at this sort of level - at times she looked on the brink of turning it in her favour a little bit, but couldn't quite do it.

An enjoyable final for me, from a neutral perspective. At least it felt like a contest for most of that 1 hr 43 minutes. Ana looked to be the winner but it never really felt certain until that last service game when Safina collapsed.

Not a classic by any means, and the tennis was a bit scrappy at times, but there were some lovely points out there, some intelligent shotmaking at times, and it was undoubtedly one of the better RG finals of the past several years - too many have been a complete stroll or the winner looked very likely from the start. Dinara at least kept it tight until midway through that second set and then it finally got away from her.

Overall, a better RG tournament for the women then we've seen in recent years, too.

the n°1 spot is highly deserved. period. even if henin had played,she would probably hav e lost before the finals. all the plyers were there, just like they are at all tournaments during the year.

I think her defense on clay ahs always been pretty good. She has more time to reach and set up her FH. I always thought clay was her best surface (even though I wasn't so sure anymore after Berlin and Rome).

Well done to Ana, I'm not gonna be hypocrite and say I'm becoming a fan and everything but she made me cry, during the serbian anthem (:unsure: spelling ?)cause that's when I realized her little girl's dream became true for her, I thought it was cute, definately didn't deserve all the hate (I know I was a part of it). Enjoyable game to watch on clay, definately improved her movement dramatically, almost Nadal-like sometimes :lol:

I thought she was gonna hurt herself in that line guy chair, that was a :unsure: moment.

A big :o at the French crowd full of rich people who are just there to show themselves, applauding like the girl won a nobel prize or something, it's sport, be a little more enthousiastic people :fiery:

Was a pretty decent match I thought. Dinara had her chances though, but Ana exposed Dinara's weak movement better than Sharapova and Dementieva were able too. Still a great tournament for Safina, and congrats to Ana! :)

Congrats to Ana and Dinara. It certainly was one of the better finals in most recent years, at least Dinara showed up to play in her firs Grand Slam final. I still think Ana should have thanked Justine for this gift;)

Oh, I agree that Ana was in it to win it, willing to fight through the inevitable butterflies. Dinara not so much. Erratic. Not hate at all, just my own honest observation. Ana admits as much when she says:

“I think we both played a very nervous match, lots of chances for both of us,” Ivanovic said. “I’m just so happy to keep my composure until the end. It’s amazing.”

Expected when you have (relative) newbies playing in such a big match. Both need to repeat in order to get used to the situation and give us something like Aussie 2003, 2002, Wimby 2006, 2005...

Yeah I thought it was better than any final here since 2002 when Serena beat Venus, and even in this match I think there were better rallies. Safina was off, but not nearly as bad as Svetlana, Bartoli, Ivanovic, Pierce, etc etc in slam finals of the past several years. Ana went out and WON the match, she didn't have it handed to her.
