Tokyo (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cf/Ja-Tokyo.ogg)(東京, Tōkyō? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese), literally "Eastern capital") is a unique subnational administrative region (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_of_Japan) of Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) with characteristics of both a prefecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefectures_of_Japan) and a city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cities_of_Japan). It is the de facto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_facto) capital of Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_of_Japan),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo#_note-capital) the most populous subnational entity and city in the country, and the center of the most populous metropolitan area in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metropolitan_areas_by_population) with a population of over 35 million people in the Greater Tokyo Area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Tokyo_Area)[2] (http://esa.un.org/unup/). Tokyo is the seat of the Japanese government (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_of_Japan) and the Imperial Palace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokyo), and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Household_of_Japan). The twenty-three special wards of Tokyo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_wards_of_Tokyo), although each administratively a city in its own right, comprise the area informally considered as the "city of Tokyo" and are collectively one of the largest cities in the world with a total population of over 8 million people.[3] (http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/bigcities.htm) Tokyo has the largest metropolitan gross domestic product (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gross_domestic_product) in the world for a city, and it held the title of the world's most expensive city for over a decade from 1992 through 2005.[4] (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/4669400.stm)
Prior to 1943, Tokyo was the name of both one of the 47 prefectures of Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefectures_of_Japan), Tokyo-fu, and the populous city of Tokyo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_City) in the eastern half of the prefecture. In 1943 the city and prefecture were merged into a unique prefecture-level government entity, known as Tōkyō-to 東京都 or "Tokyo Metropolis". This administrative region includes the twenty-three "special wards" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_wards_of_Tokyo) of the former city, many suburban cities in the western half of the prefecture, and two chains of islands extending south into the Pacific Ocean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ocean).

I dont know what is more annoying...the fact that there are no aussies here or the fact that Hsieh is playing a 10K....if she does play...hope she loses r1 for being so stupid!!

I know - I was wondering why the hell Hsieh is here too - then I thought maybe her ranking had gone down alot or something (I don't follow the Asian players so much).

She's ranked 106, so no need for 10K's yet I guess. She made the fourth round at the AO even.

I know she made the 4th round of the AO - I saw some of her matches. :p I thought maybe it's the only tourney she did well in and that her ranking was down to like 200 or so. But 106? :help: She should so not be playing here. That's just stupid!

She did not play all that much after AO. She lost first round at Indian Wells and in qualifying for Miami. She won the $25K in Incheon and made the second round of $50K Saint-Gaudens after that. And of course lost first round FO in a three-set thriller to Yakimova.

Which is why I thought her ranking might suck now. I mean it's bad enough if players ranked around 200 are playing $10k's but someone ranked almost top 100? :help:

Indeed, I checked TBE's thread and he has her at 117 now. She should not play 10K's.

MMM..i think Su-Wei is playing here so that she could pair up with her sister Su-Ying in doubles. Trying to push her ranking up i guess. Although i really dont know why she doesnt concentrate on the grass court season, she came so close to beating Golovin last year at Wimbledon.

I'm really hoping she can. :hearts:

Su-Wei and her sister lost 1R doubles. Wonder if she'll tank her match tomorrow, or simply withdraw. Pretty much a waste of a week. :o
As expected.
