I find this almost impossible to believe as I have talked to her and these did not seem to be issues she had on her mind.

Also she was very much looking forward to the Olympics.

And she has a good arrangement with her country for her expenses... she is in no danger of losing her funding.

And she has just made Top 50!!!

If this is true, that's horrible that Akgul felt this way. Would other players really make fun of her physical features? Who are these bitches? Yes, she's tall and not feminine looking, but there are many other players on tour who aren't beauty queens either. I imagine the guarantee of a WNBA contract would be more appealing than the "you only earn lots of money if you win lots of matches" clause found in tennis...

I really hope this is more about guaranteed money for Akgul and not a feeling that she "doesn't belong" or that others make fun of her all the time...

The news basically says that:

- Everybody was making fun of her in the locker room because of her height and her body.
- She couldn't stand watching everybody making fun of her anymore and she decided to accept an offer to play basketball for her national team and in the WNBA.

Bullying sucks so much! :mad::mad::mad:

tried to give a fast translation. I speak Portuguese, which is very similar to spanish, so well, here it is.

the #50 ranked player has announced in a press conference that she's leaving tennis at 24.

the best uzbek player said that she's retiring because constant injuries and feeling tired because of such height and also, the everyday jokes every time she stepped into the lockerroom, the players would give her nicknames such as 'the giraffe' and 'gargantua' (?), the uzbek has decided to move into a sport where her physic wouldn't be so calling.

She recieved a proposal to switch to Basketball WNBA, sport whom she had practiced in her youth, coming to recieve even a invitation for the Junior National Uzbek Team, offer which Akgul refused just to play tennis.

Soon Akgul will reveal in which team she's going to play to.

The news has surprised everyone because right now, Akgul has been living the best phase on her tennis carrer, like reaching the semifinals of a tournament in Istambul and also her best ranking classification.

Since her beginning, her progression has been visible and all tennis experts has said that she had a lot to go yet. Legendary players like Monica Seles and Chris Evert said that with her superb potential, she could've reach the top 3.

This news has caused a great commotion in Uzbekistan, where they have been lacking ot a sport hero.

...... but I don't think she has suffered this kind of treatment! She has friends, including the male players!! She is quite well liked, and respected. I've seen her pass through the players' area and have a lot of players say hi and she back to them. I've had at least one come up to me and say really nice things about her to me. She is particularly friends with the Russian players, because she speaks Russian too. She did like the atmosphere on the ITF tour a bit better, just because players were not with coaches so much, and so isolated as it can be on WTA. But she told me she is quite happy and was really looking forward to the season!!

This is weird, and I want a source.

I tend not to believe it, because atm she's having her best results, so why now???
and saying "I will play WNBA", just like that. I think you have to be a very good basketball player to compete in that league, would she be good enough? I doubt it (it is a whole different sport)

IF it's true this could be a huge shock for WTA. there might be some 'rethinking' about the players and their behaviour, and the atmosphere in women's tennis today.

Yes, fishy. I don't know of these quotes and suspect they are made up.

i think it's just a joke:o

It's a good one, because she did consider basketball at one time. So it is a joke by somebody who knows something about her.

But.... can somebody at the age of 24 take up pro basketball for the first time?

Here is another problem:

The Uzbek Tennis Player Akgul Amanmuradova has annouced her retirement

The Uzebek player, 50 in the world, is done with tennis.

The 50th ranked player in the world announced in a press conference that she is done with tennis at age 24.
The best player from Uzbekistan argued that she retired because of exhaustion due to constant allusions to her unusual physique. Fed up with the constant comments made by the other players on the circuit every time she entered a room, referring to her as "The Giraffe" and "Gargantuan", she has opted to change for reconversion in an atmosphere where it will be more favorable and where her physical appearance will not draw so much attention. The Uzbek has received a huge offer to play in the WNBA (basketball), a sport that she practiced in her youth and was given an offer for in Uzbekistan, an offer she rejected in order to dedicate herself and pursue tennis. In the upcoming days, Amanmuradova will be watching for what team she has been placed on file with.

The news is strange, because right now the 1.90m tennis player lived in the best moments of her career in tennis, reaching the semifinals in Istanbul and rising up the WTA rankings. Since she started tennis, her progress has been constant and the experts agreed that she still had room to improve. Historical greats of tennis like Monica Seles or Chris Evert said that with her enormous potential, Akgul would be at the minimum a top 3 player.

The news has caused a big commotion in Uzbekistan, where they don't walk by stars very often.

Can't see how this can be true with her just breaking through to the top 50 and starting to make some real money, but then again why would anyone use her for a fake story, she's not that well known.

If it's true I hope the WTA have a workplace bullying policy in place and adhere to that. akgul's best revenge would be by progressing up the rankings. She's only just taller han Lindsay and Bovina so should use them as her role models.

:weirdo: Based on what? You edited it based on an unsourced Spanish post on a message board? :fiery:

Can you actually picture that: Maria Sharapova (1.88) and Ana Ivanovic (1.85) pointing at Amanmuradova (1.90) because of her height??!

I'm 100% sure it's not them:shrug: Maria doesn't interact with other players and Ana wouldn't do that. It has to be someone else...if this is true...Vaidisova:devil:

She was just starting to have some decent results. Why retire now? It doesn't make sense. I hope its not true.

OMG look why isn't any single person here happy for her!!! WNBA is the ladies version of the NBA. In New Zealand we have a number of ex Volleyball and Netball players who retired, only to return playing Basketball!

This doesn’t add up in so many ways, it has to be a prank. It’s strange this should be in Spanish, and for some strange reason an Agul thread has started up in the Spanish players forum in recent days.

http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=344429

I’m willing to bet this prank was born out of that thread somehow.

is this a bad joke?!:help:
the article says that she retires because of discrimination from other players regarding her body build.
she wants to play basketball in the WNBA now:weirdo:

If it was a joke surely it would have been posted on GM and in english?
Unless it was originally from one of thr games threads?

I don't know maybe she's paranoid and thinks everyone is talking about her?

I can't imagine it being any of the higher ranked players to be honest, maybe some jealous wannabees?

It would be SO sad if it is true. I'm not a fan but bullying is just not right!

no surprise there.the majority of wta players are uneducated, spoilt brats.their most strenuous mental activity is to wax their legs.can you say narrowminded?
imo the names of these players should come out so we could make fun of their own physical deficiencies

Fully agree. When the root of the prank is traced I hope there will some people banned from using this forum. Such a hoax is neither funny or clever.

I just can't believe that this is true:sad:

I've seen Akgul at recent tournaments and she appears well-liked by the other players. She seemed to be friendly with Nastya and Arina Rodionova, and other Russian players.

I truly hope this is report is false.

After reading the thread in spanish I can guarantee you 100% that this is a joke. One of the posters (Hercules) made a so called joke saying that Chris Evert and Monica Seles said she'd be top 2. They're, in some way, making fun of Akgul and sord of adopted her as a joke player.

I know... can you please report this and ask the Mods to not lock it but delete it? If it is locked, it can still be searched.

I would report it but they didn't answer me last time I reported; maybe somebody else should.

people just calm down, there's no need to start insulting the spanish forumers because most of us aren't even involved in this

I have already asked the forumer who posted the news where did she get that from, because the source isn't working. I don't know if it was a joke, but I'm guessing it was.

:rolls: Okay, close the thread then

If in the future Akgul is offered an WNBA contract then I do think she should take it though. She would be an incredible basketballer!
