:D

Reveal your inner thoughts and your language bias!

Serena Williams - a beautiful name.

Venus Williams - sounds like a great warrior! Also, just sounds cool. And also sounds like a body part.

Elena Dementieva - cool because "dement" is in there

Flavia Pennetta - I just think it sounds pretty but with a dose of aggressiveness and pasta sauce.

Sania Mirza - Short and Simple. Sania is a beautiful name to describe a beautiful person. Mirza is a sharp, harsh name to describe her harrowing forehand! Put it together, and depending on how you say it, you can get pleasant or commanding!

Vera Dushevina - cool until she changed the spelling. :/

Kaia Kanepi - it's just really catchy.

Camille Pin - cute name for a cute girl!

Ashley Harkleroad - she definitely looks like an ashley, but that last name sounds as delicious as an ice cream! The kind of name that is hard to forget.

Tamarine Tanasugarn - she's Thai, so the name is naturally a little long. But because commentators rarely have a problem saying it, that means it must be a COOL name. T_T.

Akgul Amanmuradova - I seem to be picking a lot of double initials here, but this one must also be picked because the heavy sounding name is fitting for someone with a dominating presence. And how many A's are in this name?!?

Jelena Jankovic - yeh.

Alexandra Stevenson - Alexandra is the type of name for diva's, and this girl certainly is one.

Meilen Tu - because whenever she wins in tu sets, you invoke her name.

Yaroslava Shvedova - yah wah shwah vah shwah vah vah.

Kumiko Iijima - kawaii!!!

Vania King - she's... asian?

Francesca Schiavone - It's so pretty it just rolls off your tongue. And how can you RESIST calling her franny?!?

Eleni Daniilidou - I already feel like i'm on mykonos, listening to the daniilidous singing in the wind.

Agnieszka Radwanska just sounds kickass.

Vaidisova has a nice, evil ring to it..I think. And no, I'm not associating it with the person that holds it. Nicole, don't marry Radek :o

I love Safarova, it sounds...swift.

Maybe I have some kind of Russian blood, somewhere... ;) ) I also really like the Slovakian names and the Romanian names. I think 'Sorana' is a lovely name.

Dora Kiss from Hungary hass pretty name
I guess because her surname. Like Rita Kuti Kiss. Kis(s) actually means "little" in hungarian and is a pretty common name like Smith.

The most funny name for my ears is Anna Kournikova because it translates to Fuckmekova in my native language. (Really!).

I usually find latin names cool. Like Amelie Mauresmo or Anabel Medina-Garrigues. Tathiana Garbin or Tatiana Golovin sounds cool. too. I do like russian first names (Svetlana, Anna, Kateryna) but don't like family names. Those lot's of "ova's" are very boring.

The incredible thing is actually almost all the top 100 have pretty good names. There are very very few dull nondescript names or ugly sounding names at all. Virtually none. It is quite tough to find any crap names in the top 100 at all. Outside of the top 100 there are a few that are pretty drab but not that many.

As for good names well there's a lot of great names. Pretty much all the Russian Czech and Slovakian names are lovely. Amongst my faves there would be Safarova, Pironkova and Vaidisova, all flow very nicely off the tongue. The Romanian names, the Ukrainian names, the Georgian names, the Serbian and Croat names and the Romainian names also all have a lot of character and individuality. Heck the Slavic countries sure are great with names. But then some of those French and Italian names are also super. Venus and Serena are both great 1st names. The Japanese names have real personality too.

Okay so chosing a few top faves ain't going to be easy but here goes....
1. Tamarine Tanasugarn
2. Elena Daniilidou
3. Tzipi Obziler
4. Emanuelle Gagliardi
5. Agnieszka Radwanska
6. Yaroslava Shvedova
7. Margalita Chakhnashvili
8. Anna Lapushchenkova
9. Monica Niculescu
10. Ai Sugiyama
11. Severine Bremond
12. Karin Knapp
13. Soledad Esperon
14. Rika Fujiwara
15. Lucie Safarova

But now I though I would single out a some of the very few dull boring and nondescript names on the tour as there are so few.

Katie O'Brien
Laura Granville
Nicole Pratt (quite unfortunate name really)
Melanie South
Anne Kremer
Maria-Jose Martinez-Sanchez (a long mouthful of common names)
Sophie Ferguson
Angela Hayes

These are actually all I could find in the top 200 that don't really grab me, not very many at all........

80s dud Brit Ellinore Lightbody
Carling Bassett (any player named after beer has to be good)
Oliver Freelove (should have played mixed doubles with Happy Ho)
Brandon Coupe (presumably famed for his drives)
Davinia Lobbinger should have played doubles with Anna Smashnova

Anastasia Myskina - it sounds so mystic and exotic at the same time

I also like these names:

Elena Dementieva - very melodic name
Dinara Safina - a dynamic and strong sounding first name in contrast with a soft sounding last name
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova - it sounds so rythmic
Akgul Amanmuradova - look above
Iroda Tulyaganova - rythmic and exotic
Ana Ivanovic - last name sounds like a wave
Kaia Kanepi - Ka-i-a-ka, sounds wild, like a battle scream

Elena Dementieva sounds like she has mental problems, because

Demente = madness = someone with psicological/mental problems so
when I see her, so beautiful and psicological healthy it's weird...

Yes, this association certainly rings in Lena's last name. I was curious since I first heard her name years ago about its etymology.

A quote from Wikipedia

Dementia (from Latin de- "apart, away" + mens (genitive mentis) "mind") is the progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond what might be expected from normal aging.

I really love Nicole Vaidisova, it sounds cool and beautiful, mainly in English and Alison Lang's pronounciation of it in English is just terrific :hearts:

A lot of names are garbled first in careless orthography, especially Czech, Slovenian, Croat, Serb, Polish, Russian, Hungarian names, and then in clueless pronunciation.

Plenty of examples come to mind: Šafařová, Vaidišová, Benešová, Klepač, Šprem, Ivanović, Janković, Agnieszka Radwańska, Woźniacki, Ágnes Szávay, ...

If we spend so much time talking about tennis players, why not to make a small effort at learning how to spell and pronounce their names? It really is not that hard to learn what are these diacritical signs doing above some letters, and what is the correct pronunciation of those letters.
