This was a huge wasted opportunity for Pennetta, but Suarez Navarro played excellent tennis. If she keeps improving, she could potentially win this title at some point in her career.

:hearts::worship: Navarro as a qualifier makes slam QF, amazing. Better luck next time I guess for Pennetta, this was and likely will be prolly the best chance at a slam QF for her.
Amazing display. Navarro totally and completely outplayed Penneta from all over the court.

I think today Navarro showed she deserves to be ranked much higher while Penntta showed she's ranked where she is for a reason.

If Navarro play like this against Jankovic and it'll be a great high quality match. :D

Here is a link to find out a bit more information about her. Can't believe Flavia lost - really good chance for her here missed. But we welcome Carla to the QFs - this could be a really good chance for her (look at Fernandez and Petrova's career for example, it was enhanced from a good run here)

Players on tour know Venus is going to make lots of unforced errors and her second serve sucks. Their game plan is to keep the ball in play, wait for an error and be agressive when they have to. And most importantly, a win over a Williams is always a big deal no matter what. The players get a lot more praise and attention. They are made to feel as though they are better than they really are until they face someone with a lesser name.

You guys are funny.
Just because Pennetta ousted Venus, you were 100% sure she would win this match... You obviously didnt see the other matches, because if you had, you would have known this girl was playing out of her mind - for this tournament at least. I personally had a feeling she was gonna win.
And I'm not just saying that because she beat Mauresmo, but she has only lost one set in her first match. Oh and yeah, I guess in a way it's a relief to see that Amelie was beaten by an eventual QFist at least!

It never fails....these girls play their hearts out when they play Venus and Serena, yet, let somebody else show up across the net and they fold like wildflowers. Expect Srebotnik to fold next. Venus and Serena you should be ashamed of yourselves. And this is a from a staunch Williams supporter.

I didn't see the match, but I know that if Flavia plays at her best, then she IS capable of beating anybody on this surface. So the loss is surprising, at least this clearly.

I am far away from home so I really can't comment on Suarez-Navarro, but I hope she won't be a Fernandez...

Think about it, Pennetta had nothing to lose when she played Venus. Yes she beat her last year but she was still considered the underdog for their match and so she was able to play freely and go for her shots (which she did). Today was a completely differant scenario where Pennetta now was the one who was the big favourite to win and so all the pressure was on her to play well and reach her first slam quarter-final and well the result says it all

I would have liked to see Flavia reach the quarters but congrats to Suarez-Navarro. It is always exciting to see a new face come through.

Nicole Pratt said she reminded her of Costa (retired ATP player) and I kind of agree with her. She has a really steady and fluid game and her one-handed backhand is pretty good when used aggressively and when she needs to defend. From what I've seen so far, she's a classic claycourter who uses spin and angles to open up the court. Next round's Jankovic. Jankovic didn't end on a strong note and she doesn't really have really big weapons so this match-up might result into very long rallies. :)

She played great against Peng in Fed Cup, but after seeing that, her performance against Mauresmo, and this...the future of Spanish tennis has truly arrived.
