Jarka lost 1st rd here at Surbiton yesterday to Abigail Spears of the USA 6-1 6-3 !

A tough loss, Spears is currently ranked 180 in the world. Spears played well but this is a match like at the French Open against Sanchez that Jarka should win. Jarka has beaten Spears in the past as she has with Sanchez , these are opponents Jarka should be beating and for her to lose yesterday 1 and 3 again highlights the problems . She needs better direction and a seriously experienced good coach in a one on one private situation, that is the only way forward. Right now she does not have that and her game is suffering because of it.

Jarka's game at present is too "ragged" , it is just to phrone to breaking down quickly, there are too many unforced errors and it is very patchy . She has moments of brillance but is also very erratic. There is little discipline in her shot selection and the way she sets up her points.

I had feeback from people who watched her also in qualies there at Surbiton when she struggled against 2 British players one unranked and another 500 in the world and they said the same thing. Jarka hits the ball like a top 10 player but in matches at the moment she is too "loose" ...she looks "lost" at times not knowing what to do . There is a definate lack of very good guidence and direction there and its clear her present "coaching situation" is not working !

She needs to see this and make the right decisions meaning get a full time one on one very good coach just for herself . In the AIS program at present she is sharing and with too many different people and has no quality continuity on the coaching side. She needs total focus and attention 24/7 just on her , good direction and discipline and planning day to day . Yes Jarka is going to still have her good days on her talent alone, but that is not enough ...to seriously go forward and for her to make real inroads and achieve the success her potential deserves and get back to where she was it will need what I have said

Thanks for the report :) I hope Tennis Australia gets with the program and sets Jarka up with an experienced, 1-on-1 coach (Tony Roach?) to really develop her game. It seems she has so much natural talent and hits the ball so cleanly, it'd be a shame for that to go to waste.

Third tournament in a row that Jarmila has done well to qualify then blown the first match in straight sets when she should have won. Olivia Sanchez, Abigail Spears and Bethanie Mattek she should have beaten them all and would be about 50 ranking spots higher!

Huntress55
Jun 9th, 2008, 01:05 PM

slamman
Jun 11th, 2008, 07:04 AM
What Daniel said is absolutely right ...Jarka should be beating the likes of Olivia Sanchez, Abigail Spears and Bethanie Mattek and each of those loses represent big missed opportunities.

Right now Jarka is rarely beating any players ranked above herself ( Vinci the exception but Vinci also has been struggling in the last year ) and struggling too often with much lower ranked players.

I watched Jarka play in Birmingham against Mattek and she should for sure have won that 1st set and served it out at 5-4 30-0 up ...in the 2nd when she got broken at 2-2 she fell away badly in losing the next 4 games !!! Just in this one critical area in how she is competing and fighting and her emotional discipline throughout a match is still a long way away from where she has to be in my opinion.

Game wise with her the problems are very clear to me and if Jarka is to fullfill her huge potential and get back to where she should be, then these areas in my mind are the keys to that ! of course to address these correctly and make this happen she firstly needs a one on one very experienced womens coach with a proven track record who is 24/7 only focused on her and knows how to get the very best from her.

These areas are ...

1) A lack of consistent discipline with the way she structures and sets her points and also her execution on opportunity balls ...often she gets suckered into overplaying !

2) No clear apparent effective strategy in place against these kind of opponents she is losing to. There seems to be too much "panic" at times in key moments and this comes back to being sure of what she is doing.

3) Her shot selection needs to be cleaned up this is one of the most important areas ...too many cheap errors especially off the 2nd and 3rd strike of the point and too often going for the wrong shot from the wrong position. She also does not use the centre of the court the way enough in the way she should be in setting her points.

4) Her defensive skills need addressing ...when she is in trouble in a point she too often goes for the lowest percentage "million dollar" shot instead of playing smart higher percentage ball ...simply meaning better margins, more shape, bigger targets and using the centre of the court more effectively

5) Her forehand when pushed wide out in the right corner is too often vulnerable to breaking down ...she needs to get set better with the way she prepares and with her footwork. Often caught late ,she needs to also get much better shape on this shot and give herself bigger targets, more centre and cross

6) With her serve in how big a weapon that can be there is just no way Jarka should be getting broken like she does and especially on a grass court ...her choices are questionable on serve and she does,nt serve to the score as smart as she can ...also those key games at 5-4 serving out sets come back to her routines and being able to hit her "spot" when it matters ...this comes from quality of repetition in her practises what she is doing outside around her matches and if she is making that extra time EVERY DAY to keep polishing this ability on serve.

If these areas are correctly addressed and with the right mindset , Jarka can do great things no doubts but they need addressing asap !!!

I agree with most of what you said.

I have seen Jarka play on TV a couple of times, once at Wimbledon last year (against Jankovic) and also this year at the Australian Open (against Serena Williams).

Whilst it is probably unfair to judge her against such quality opponents, there were still things that can definitely be looked at and improved upon.
I agree that her serve is (or should) be a weapon, but her second serve seems to be quite a confidence shot. She needs to develop more spin on the ball and get a bit more accurate with it. I also agree that her groundstrokes are solid and effective, but she really needs to put more topspin on the ball, especially when draw deep or wide...

But really the biggest thing that needs to be worked on is her fitness and her movement...she was quite solid at the Australian Open, but seems to have lost some weight since then, which is a good thing. She needs to make a Casey-like transition. Once she does, she should be top 100 again

And I definitely agree that she needs one coach to work with full time - Dellacqua is working with Nicole Pratt and Stosur and Molik both achieved thier best results with an individual coach. Jarka is no excepting. Working in a group like situation may be beneficial for some things, but not for many others...

Thanks for the reports :)

Jarka is up to No.166 on TBE's projected rankings :)
But she has 60 points coming off at Wimbledon, she needs a good result to marginalise that otherwise she could slip from the top 200

Thats good news :) good job Jarka ... Strycova now to quali ! Jarka can definately do that but the key will be her 1st serve, she must serve very well because Strycova has a very good return game and is tough off the ground especially from her backhand side which is her weapon.

Strycova has been playing a lot better in recent months and getting back to the form she was in when she got to 55 in the world back in 2004 . She is also obviously playing well on the grass beating a big serving dangerous player like Arn in the 1st round then today she ran through Ivanova.

For Jarka she just needs to stay focused on her serve and do a good job because she is going to for sure get opportunities to break the Strycova serve. If Jarka is disciplined on her own serve and exploits Strycova,s weaknesses really well she will be too good. Her forehand can break down under pressure especially wide to the right corner or at her ,thats definately the weaker side and the 2nd serve is also very attackable.

She struggles against players who can mix it up really well and not give her the same ball and pace and importantly not allow her to start the point and dictate from her strength her backhand side. You must start at her centre and forehand and get into that side and back behind her a lot to this side also .

Strycova is a very programed player from the back of the court so as long as you don,t play her "in" and give her what she wants you will break her down . If she goes to that backhand side she must get her wide off the court to open up the weaker side.

Jarka has all the "tools" to beat this girl 100% , she just needs to play a very solid smart match and I am very confident she will do it :)

 Thats really tough because I believed Jarka would beat Strycova today. There were enough opportunities for her to win and these are the matches that really matter and can make such a huge difference.

The bottomline is she lost today because of one reason and that was her serve which should be her weapon and on grass I felt thats where she had a big edge over Strycova but her serving let her down today and when it mattered most. I said yesterday that this match would be decided on how Jarka serves, it was all about her not Strycova, had she served better and been more disciplined and focused on those key games I have no doubt she could have won.

The facts are Jarka lost her serve twice in both sets at critical times which especially on grass for someone with her serving potential is not right. She has I consider one of the best serves on the tour but did not serve to her potential when it mattered. Yes 1 break ok , you can lose a little focus throw in a cheap point or 2 and the other girl comes up with a few great returns thats fair enough but she got broken 4 times in those 2 sets at key moments and thats where she lost the match. Against someone of Strycova's ability on the return game its very tough to lose serve twice a set and expect to win.

Whenever she had the chance to really put Strycova under pressure she was too "loose" and gave away that chance. For me this match was 30% about Strycova and 70% about Jarka. Whenever the momentum was turning Jarka's way she did not capitalise.

In both sets she went down a break but did a great job to fight back only to fail to consolidate on her own serve and this area should be her biggest strength. In the 1st set 4-3 down she lost her serve from 40-15 up , a game she had to win and that cost her the set, that was a huge game and had she held then the pressure was really on Strycova.

In the 2nd it was the similar , she dropped serve at 2-2 got down 4-2 and did a great job to break back at on that 4-3 game to level for 4-4only to lose her serve again at the most critical time and that cost her the match. Strycova was vulnerable at those key moments in both sets at 4-3 15-40 1st set and 4-4 2nd set and the momentum was definately on Jarka's side. I believe had she converted and taken care of serve Strycova would have folded and Jarka would have won I have no doubts.

A real shame because this match was hers to win and would have been a big one for her !
