I can't believe that Venus did not want to stop playing. I don't understand Venus sometimes. She's a smart woman and it was clearly getting late. I don't know why she did not ask to stop play down 3-4. Who knows if she would have won tomorrow, fact is she could have had a chance. Really bad decision by Venus. I am very disappointed in Venus today. Usually I take her losses well, but this one really bothers me.

You're a dumb ass. Flavia played a great match, on her best surface. Venus played a horrible match, on her worst surface.

It's not rocket scientry.

That's a disgrace to all GS Champions past and present to say Flavia "looked like a multiple slam champ". Flavia will never do anything noteworthy in her career, and even if she reaches the QF, that will be her best result in her entire career.

As expected,
she wasn´t able to improve her game :(
And that wasn´t enough to beat a player like Flavia!
Her bad matches against Sfar and Obziler were already a bad sign, and that result isn´t a surprise for me.....

She had a great draw, but she wasted this big chance :awww:
Her game is just too weak these days, and not only on clay!
I doubt that she will reach the Wimbledon final again
She played her last good tournament in New York last year :awww:

I don't care, that both sisters are out in round 3 is worth some exaggeration.
But you are right that Venus was never a contender for the title in Paris. Nice to see that you as a fan were able to recognize it. And Flavia did play well.

She was a dark horse. Cuz she's a champion and is capable of producing her best tennis and hasn't slid to where Momo is yet. Yes Flavia did play well. She played like she was supposed to win.

Anyway congrats Flavia, she was really solid out there.Venus did not have the heart for this match because she was being played off the court by Flavia who really surprised me. Great backhand down the line. Venus has won so much that I really think it is hard for her to play these matches knowing she is never going to win the tournament.

Venus needed to be playing at her absolute best and unfortunately she couldn't do it. But Flavia was insane. She was making all those shots down the line. It was impressive to watch. Hopefully she can continue this form. It was a very good match to watch.

As for Venus, Wimbledon is next and you have lost early here. Always a good sign.

How was she a dark horse? In your previous post you wrote that aside of Wimbledon she "plays like a top 20 player at best". Contradicting yourself a bit, ain't ya?
Regardless, just get over it, this is hardly end of the world. From a realistic point of view Venus wasn't gonna win RG anyway and you guys don't care about 4th rounds or QF's, do you? Now she has more time to focus on preparation for her favourite tournament, where she actually has a shot.

It was nice to see Flavia actually go for her shots though as opposed to just waiting for Vee to make an error as many other players would have done so props to her. Her attitude couldn't have been more differant than Vee's, just full of positivity. Watch and learn plz Vee coz it seems right now that outside of grass and hardcourt, you have no confidence in your game. Also, I wonder if Vee was playing any one else other than Flavia, maybe Caroline being the other exception, would she have asked for play to be suspended? It seems Vee and Flavia get along quite well as there was something in an article I read where apparently Flavia was helping Vee with her Italian. I guess that friendship is over now though  :p

I think she might have wanted to stop playing, but she has always been one to focus on her job and let the umpires do theirs. I can only remember a couple of isolated times of her even challenging calls, and that was when she was still a teenager.

Surprisingly lifeless performance from Venus. I mean, she didn't look great in her first two rounds but at least she looked poor trying to do the right things. She knows on clay she needs to get inside the court and dominate, and try and get forward, because if she's stuck in long rallies behind the baseline that's not a great position for her - it's not her game. And yet in that second set she only ever went to the net when she was dragged in by a Pennetta short slice or dropshot.

She was passive and pretty much surrendered the playing of the match onto Pennetta's terms so it's no surprise that she lost, and she seemed less...I don't know...her demeanour was less combative than I expected - almost like she just wanted to get the loss done with tonight instead of coming back tomorrow. Resigned in a way, and going through the motions. Peculiar.

I take nothing away from Pennetta though - I don't think Venus handed her the match at all and had Pennetta not won it with her own sparkling play, Venus would have found a way to hang in there for sure and turn it her way. So credit to Flavia for that.

“It wasn’t a good day for our family,” Venus said.

Williams said she never asked the chair umpire to suspend the match because of darkness.

“I just kept playing,” she said.

Why didn’t she ask to stop?

“Because I didn’t,” she said.

The women’s draw lost plenty of star power with the elimination of the Williams sisters. They have combined to win 14 Grand Slam titles but were beaten by two tour veterans who have yet to reach a major quarterfinal.

“It’s never fun,” Venus said. “I never get used to losing. I don’t think anyone gets used to losing. And if they do, then maybe it’s time to retire.”

Very fair by Venus :) She is just a great champion and can handle with these losses and give credit to her opponents.

I saw the match again.

:o

Venus's serve seems so attackable but maybe that is just the clay. But if Serena's is penetrating why isn't Venus.

I am disappointed that Venus didn't come to the net as much as she could have although Pennetta did play HELLA good, Venus could have kept her errors down by finishing at the net.

But oh well

:help: Two in one day.

 Who has the cakewalk now?

Maria. :)

Flavia is really cute, she has a new fan even though she killed me yesterday. Her reaction and the reaction of her team was just so raw it really was nice! Flavia's team did some serious scouting from this match, you can tell.

She played well, and I think that was the main problem," Williams said. "She played great and hit a lot of great shots, a lot of lines. I wish her the best of luck in the tournament. It just wasn't a good day for our family today, but we always learn and get more determined after our losses."

Very fair by Venus :) She is just a great champion and can handle with these losses and give credit to her opponents.

It looks like she and Pennetta like each other , Venus is almost always very fair , but I wish her best luck in the tournament is not that often

Venus :yeah:

Nice quote from Venus, classy. :)
I read in one of Venus' interview that she and Flavia speaks Italian with each other. At least Flavia is trying to help her with her Italian.

Just saw last two games: Flavia, WOW! Also, Venus totally cared, so it's not like she's lost the drive.

Nice feedback here for the quote from Venus :D :yeah:

Yeah, it is nice that these both obviously have a good relationship with each other. I also remember when Flavia made so many compliments about Venus and she said it is a pity she never played her YET (Was in 2006).

Venus was also very classy and fair yesterday. She said waving goodbye and smiled in the crowd. She also said very nice words to Flavia in the end I suppose.

She probably knows how well she always does in Wimbledon then after a "worse" Roland Garros ;)

Yeah, despite she served really hard, 202 was her hardest in these 3 rounds , which is really good.

On grass her service is so difficult to return fine , I think in second week of Wimbledon she got 1 or 2 breaks in 4 matches, which was brillant.

Everything seems pretty similar to 2007 and losing to Pennetta on clay is not a shame , I'm very positive and optimistic for Wimbledon.

Venus.
Seems really classy in her interview and still seems to have the determination to keep on learning from her mistakes. :yeah: Wimbledon is coming anyways so let's get our game together now! :bounce:

But congrats to Flavia. :worship: She played a great match. :yeah:

Venus Williams. The most stubborn player in the world.

Pennetta's reaction after winning... :spit:

Did she just win a slam or a 3rd round match? :haha:

Venus  I could tell she wasn't gonna win the event from watching the earlier rounds, but still. :(

Congrats to Pennetta, it obviously meant a lot to her.
