View Full Version : Kata Srebotnik just gave quite a gracious and almost apologetic interview on TTC

She was so cute for saying "sorry" to Serena fans. It was so nice to hear her talk about winning due to strategy and not this "just have to play my game" cliche that we hear so often. Obviously for those of us fans who enjoy an all-court game, it is rewarding as a fan to see a player still doing her best relatively late in her career. She has the touch shots, the one-handed slice, the inside out forehand. Kind of like Steffi LITE (Very light) albeit with a touch of Martina or Justine at the net. Nice interview, Kata. :hearts:

Cheer up, Serena fans! Serena just lost to a very talented player today. No shame in that! Serena did not retire from tennis so just be happy. :)

She's a great player and such a nice person. Spoke to her and Ai at Wimbledon last year and they were both so lovely.

Nice to see her come through this one, she was due a big win after coming close quite a few times. She has a nice game and this win could really boost her career.

Good luck in the next round :)

I know! I was there and got an autograph after her first round match against Dominguez Lino, after she saved about 4 MPs. I was honestly surprised that:

A) Alot of people actually wanted photos of her and themselves and she didn't decline at all. Great character!
B) She did sign a hell of a lot of autographs and was porbably one of the only players who took their time to sign as many as possible. She was so pleasant with all her fans and was actually talking with us.

Kata seems like such a down to earth woman and I wish her all the success. I'm glad she won today!

She reminds me of Llodra on the men's side -- former doubles specialist with some great results in singles nowadays.

Aww, it's not quite so bad when Serena loses to sweeties, the losses to Kim and Linds were always the easiest to take :)

Kata is a great player... she always challenges many of the top players, but rarely comes away with a win... today she did.

I'm glad that at Serena lost to somebody I like, an Kata has had some devastatingly-close losses against top players before, so she must be ecstatic with this victory. :)

Wasn't Srebotnik a good juniors player?? Glad to see her doing so well.
And talk about being gracious after a win! I guess she knew there were a lot of Serena fans on this board ;)

my friend has been volunteering for years at the local tournament here at Stanford. Last year on occasion he had the pleasure of driving Kata and Ai to and from the tournament to their hotels. he mentioned that Kata was one of the friendliest players he has ever met.

Yes, she won junior Wimbledon about ten years ago. I think she won the first WTA event she played too but then seemed to stall for a while. Great to see her realising some of that potential :)

I know what you mean about the comparisons with Martina and Justine, though not so much with Steffi. The way she approaches, has great feel and creativity, uses her forehand as a weapon (totally reminds me of JUJU, and has a great sense of the court, unfortunately not the mental fortitude.

She has the potential though, I can see her being one of those players that blossoms as they get older. :)

Yes, she beat Kim in the final then I think. She used to be a #1 junior. And won Estoril in 1999, first WTA event she played. But she made some poor choices in her career, I think having Tina Križan as her "coach" was a horrible move and she's finally playing some of her best tennis now at 27 after she hired a proper coach and worked with Biljana Veselinovic for the last few years.

She is in fact really nice, I never heard any bad stories about her from people going to tourneys and whenever I've seen her play live, she was always extremely kind to anyone, who like asked for an autograph or a pic.
I guess maybe this is also the reason for her not being able to fulfil her potential, she maybe sometimes lacks the killer instict, she's been in position to beat higher ranked players, but rarely pulled it off. She has the tools, but she often lacks the mental edge. That's why I'm so happy about her win today and I hope she can continue playing well in the 4th round.

Did you actually read Serena's interview? Your smiley emoticon indicates that you know you are just trolling.

I've always enjoyed watching Srebotnik's game. She's very focused and seems to enjoy herself while playing. Sometimes Serena looks to be in pain when she's playing: too much drama, sometimes. This was never going to be an easy match for Serena. Too bad Serena's RG had to end here, but ... good luck in next round to Srebotnik.

LOL and I wonder if this apologetic mindset and "gracious" attitude is the reason why this is only her 2nd top 5 win in her career. But these are qualities that you guys reward! I just don't see the benefits of this kind of attitude in competition. It makes you look like a nice person, I guess.

 It seemed to me as if she left without the thing being properly over.
Even if she lost, she still has obligations towards the press, I don't make the rules, players have been fined in the past because of it. No need to jump on someone's back just for stating a fact.

She is one of the older ones on tour, and some of the older players normally have this type of attitude. I doubt a 20 y/o Srebotnik would have said the same thing. Anyway, this is just what she said to the media it hardly means anything.
