Unlike Melbourne, each match is a struggle here.
Maria has to serve better as she goes thru the draw.
She broke serve a lot in this match, but didn't hold enough.
This tournament is wide open. It's still a great chance for her.
One round at a time. Knapp is next

blumaroo
May 30th, 2008, 12:21 PM
I can't believe how awful she is playing. Serve is almost back at 2007 level and that forehand is even more erratic than Mauresmo's. She should have played a more high percentage game in the second set. She's going to relive her Australian Open final 2007 experience if she doesn't raise her game against Safina. Knapp is a Safina lite so that's good preparation I guess.

Please start living up to your ranking Maria! This kind of play is horrible, horrible, horrible even for a Top 20 player and for the world no. 1 to do that is just :help:

Unless she wants to relive her AO 2007 final experience or RG 2007 SF experience then she needs to step it up BIG TIME.

Oh and she only has 6 aces so far. Considering all her matches have been three setters so far (which means she played the same number of sets as Ana/Serena etc., longer ones as well) that stat is pathetic. Little Jie is in 2nd place on Aces with 13!!!

I think she's been experimenting with opening up the court more.
Hitting very wide near the lines, more dropshots.
She can adjust as the opponents get better.
She made the semis last year and is 10-1 on clay this year.

Safina's not that good and she's a mental midget. Maria can win this tournament playing B level tennis. The only players she HAS to bring her A game to beat are Serena and Justine. I'm not saying she will win, but she doesn't have to play well to win.

To an extent that's true, but I've never seen Maria serve 17 DFs in a match before, either. There's something more going on with her than just an off day or two. She hasn't played really well since the Fed Cup matches.

She _can_ win this French Open, but it is getting less and less likely IMO. Won't stop me from pulling for her though.

Dinara is playing her best tennis and if she was a mental midget she wouldn't beat Justine and Serena back to back. Plus she has beaten Maria at RG before so it isn't new for her. It's more like Dinara can beat Maria with her B-game considering Maria's current level of play. Unless Maria raises her game like she did last year against Chakvetadze.

It's only 2 month and it's not even a full time thing. plus, none of her coach is an expert of clay court! so if you compare Maria to Ana, Ana grew up playing in europe, her coach is from europe so.... There is no comparison at all.

So what , we all know Maria and the Williams can easily overcome from a bad performance and then play an amazing match .

Maria will fight in every single round, although it's hard to imagine her beating Safina , considering their form right now.

Ivanovic , Safina , Zvonareva , Venus and Jankovic... They are all playing better than Maria right now.
