I don't...I expected Vera to win. she played better tennis in Charleston. And she's basically unbeatable in three sets this year. But I still had hope anyway.

I am so sad. If I had been at this match, I think I'd have cried. She wasted so many opportunities. She had triple BP at 2-2, then lost three games in a row. Every time she blew a slew of BPs, she'd fold and lose several games in a row.

I like Vera a lot but this is just so disheartening. Elena. :sobbing:

I don't think she's there yet. She was having tantrums against Jankovic in Miami a few weeks ago. Also, if you look at who she actually beat in three sets, these aren't mentally tough players (and, in most cases, aren't even Top 30). However, a win against the so-called "3-set Queen" is definitely a step in the right direction.

Since AO she lose 3-setter only against Sharapova in Doha final, and for example, Elena Dementieva is known like one of best 3-setters specialists in last 4-5 season on tour and have early break today in 3rd - but Vera still won today!

Cp6uja, I got to hand it to you. No one else comes up with such revealing intriguing statistics. :yeah: Those statistics really do say a lot as far as I'm concerned.

I have said this before, and will probably say it again, mental strength is like physical strength, it is not something that a player has or doesn't have for their entire careers. It is something that can be aquired or lost. The history of tennis is littered with players who have had serious problems with mental fragility which they have overcome. Vera Edition 2008 does seem to me to indeed be a much improved model in terms of mental toughness. Very good to see, and long may it continue. :)

What's really interesting is that, historically, Dementieva has been the queen of 3-set matches for a long time. Things have changed, however.

When Elena served against Patty, I couldn't believe it. Her serve was on and good; she even hit three aces! Today--though she did not regress to the days of chronic double faults--the serve was not that great. Zvonareva had a bad second set; both her serve and her backhand went to hell. I just assumed Dementieva was going to clean up in the third. She was up 3-0, and I considered it all next to over, then Vera started creeping in again, the backhand more secure and the serve slowly improving. Dementieva seemed to drop mentally, losing break points and then blowing games. I was surprised by the outcome. I thought Dementieva was going to be the mentally tougher of the two, but it was Zvonareva.

So I take it this was a really bad match? How was Elena's forehand? And was Elena just hitting lots of errors, or was Vera that good? Mix of both?

Elena's 5-2 in three setters this year, to Szavay and Zvonareva. That's pretty good. It was in 2007 when she struggled in three-set matches, which was her "slump" year, although if she continues losing important matches deep in tournaments in three sets, then I will think you're onto something.

I've noticed out of Elena's five losses this year, four (maybe even all five) are to very smart players on the tennis court. Elena plays a stupid game, and when she faces someone with superb shot selection and changes direction of the ball well, she's going to lose unless she's having one of her great days. And her best match was against Patty in Charleston, for sure. Otherwise she wasn't...that good. I think her main problem is that she's playing a hardcourt game on a claycourt. I noticed against Patty she was trying to step in on Patty's second serves, she wouldn't change up the pace (against anyone in her first three matches), and she wasn't trying to hit behind people or execute any noticeable strategies.

I'd like to think Charleston was a tournament for her to get her feet wet on clay and that she'll improve upon it from there, by incorporating better, different tactics...but who am I kidding, she's just going to play this exact same way for Berlin, Istanbul, and Paris. I can't wait until she's back on American hardcourts. :help: She is hopeless anywhere outside hardcourt or carpet surfaces...I wish her fans would realize this.

Elena has had a very good start to the year, but she has to re-evaluate her game again for clay to do well, especially on red clay. She was playing smartly in Dubai, but pounding an inside out forehand a lot isn't going to win you matches on clay, although for her on a HC it's a great idea.

Sigh. The clay season is always so frustrating for me--none of my favorites are good on it, but it's my favorite surface.

This match was quite simple.

Vera kept up her form from yesterday in the first set, Elena played like crap.
In the second set, Vera's form noticeably dropped, Elena played like crap.
Third set, Vera started off playing terribly, then got it back while Elena played like crap.

If Elena would have played like this yesterday Patty would have beaten her like 6-3 6-2, she was really bad. She missed a lot of first serves, or so I thought, and her forehand was predictable. She was really lucky to win a set, she never really played well.

Good luck to Vera tomorrow, she is going to need it. There is this Russian guy in my section who was really getting behind Vera today, he kept shouting "davai davai Vera!" and everyone around him would stare at him. I wonder why he chose Vera over Elena...

It's true.
She was so much worse today. Yesterday she was serving amazing and today, you say she had a high percentage, but some of her first serves were barely getting past 80 MPH's, and she rarely ever went up the T like she did yesterday.

If she would have played today like she did yesterday she probably still would have lost, Vera was playing quite well. Her forehand has been surprisingly good all week, isn't it supposed to be her weak side? She also hasn't let some seemingly bad calls (the umpire finding the wrong mark) bother her. It's been impressive.

So true

The one thing Lena can depend on, while playing on clay courts, is her quickness around the court.

Still, the French Open final wasn't the matter of displaying tremendous clay court abilities. It was all about Lena's fore- and backhand working magic. She just blazed winners past her opponents at that time and that's exactly the way she goes about her matches, on whatever surface she plays them.

I am so frustrated about that loss, 'coz Serena is pulling away in the rankings right now and Lena got to that point, where she has to defend points from last year

Vera continues her trek towards being the 4th best Russian.
I would start worrying about Dementieva chances if I was a fan of hers.

Would you ever stop coming into threads saying that. Fair enough when Zvonareva actually does take over from Dementieva, but right now she's not and you are acting as if it's a sure thing, and, it's not.
