Maria gets a breadstick for her Birthday

Serena was down 3-5 and saved a SP before winning the First set :worship:

Serena came back from 2-5 and 0-40 down but lost the second 6-4

Great serving by Serena, steamrolling Maria in last set :)

Great fight Serena, 4 wins in a row against Maria :p:nerner:

First few games of the match were just dreadful :help:
Good for the rest of the first set, didn't get to see much of the second.
But Maria really struggled in the third, and Serena took full advantage of it. Well deserved win; I'd wish she'd managed a bagel. Really good tennis from her in the third.

I don't like either of these players, but I'm surprisingly pleased with Serena's win.

Somehow these two turned a clay court into a hardcourt today  I haven't seen Serena play this consistently well since she beat Maria in Miami last year...but give credit to Maria for matching Serena's intensity for most of the 1st 2 sets. There's just something about Serena's game that matches up horribly for Maria, in addition to the fact that Serena when she's on like this is nearly unstoppable.

And Serena, why do you always raise your level and concentration so WELL against Maria! It's killing me. :sobbing: Why couldn't you pull some Miami final shit. :p

Nah, great match Serena. From what little I could see on the livestream.

Two cows on ice ;) The level of play was actually quite high for the most part I thought, but... this looked like a hard court match. I can't wait to see Serena play a true clay-courter, shoudl make for a much more appealing match.

Anyway, Sharapova couldn't have played THAT much better. Sure, she sucked in the third set, but otherwise she played great and still could barely maintain a lead. I think there is a vast gulf between these two players. Maria might be able to hit as hard as Serena, and serve as well, and hit great forehands and backhands or whatever, but Serena really has the hands to place and re-direct the ball so much better. For Maria you feel like, for her to have a chance, the ball HAS to be right in her strike zone. For Serena, she is more athletically gifted with better feel so she can really strike a winner from anywhere. This dynamic IMO makes for a pretty poor rivalry between the two because Serena's superior skills are evident from start to finish, it's just a matter of when she will clean up her game to send Maria home.

Best part of the match is Sharapova's coach coming one breath away from calling Serena a bitch :tape:

Actualy this is not NEW - this is good OLD Serena! After 2003 she is never so fit like now (6-0 in 3-setters this season including vs Venus, JJ, Sveta and Maria speak for self). But still clay is her worst surface and we will see how she will play against JJ in final or especialy how she will play against other TOP5 girls at RED clay. But even if she not reach something big at RG this year (atleast final for example) she will be big title contender at Wimbledon, USO and Olympic for sure (TOP3 in all cases). Only what she need is to stay fit and health like she is now.

Beating Maria in over 2hrs on clay in 3 sets isn't much to celebrate about. Maria is still learning to play on clay , and Maria should have won this, I think she and Serena knows she won this match mentally. Overall a good week with a tournament and Tier I QF for Maria on her least favourite surface

I really don't think so, Serena's serve is just too good, even worst when Maria is her opponent.

Maybe if Maria didn't take so much time playing with her hair and breathing and serving so high in the air and thinking then the match would have been a quicker race to the beatdown in the 3rd :p

I'm so happy for Serena. It was tough and I don't want go the 'rubbing in face' route although I know some would rub it in my face. I do think Maria's playing much better now that her shoulder is doing much better. However I'm glad that Serena pulled it out since people were thinking cause Maria played awesome at the AO this year that she would beat Serena down. Good to know that that is not the case.

Maria wasn't injured and it's not like Serena is the master on clay.

A win is a good win against another top player no matter how long it took.

It's surprising to hear that she was crying because she seems really tough to me. I guess she just puts her heart and soul in to these things so losing is an enourmous let down for her. I'm not a Maria fan, but do admire her "will of steel". Serena's pretty darn tough too--when she really wants to be that is!

I honestly don't think this will affect her that much in the future. If anything, there are positives to take away from the match as I said. She was competitive for 2 sets, winning one and 'almost' winning the other...on clay. She knows what went wrong on her side of the court. Her serve is still not consistent enough. That was a major issue. She won a title anyway last week - her first clay title. Her season is still really good and with her AO win, still the best one so far. This wasn't a Slam final (although with all these threads and all the talk, it seems like it is  ). It's was a QF match in Charleston on green clay, the week after she won AI. She'll be alright. Still needs to train hard on clay though.

She was injured at Wimbledon with the calf injury and thumb injury which had her out for the whole summer and she went into the US Open with no match play.

Also, in 2001, Serena lost in 4 straight GS QF's as well, and then we know what happened after that.

Anyway, who cares. Serena just beat Maria for the 4th straight time and that's all we need to be focusing on at the moment. Serena OWNS her.

she lost in 4 straight gs qtr finals but they weren't all in 2001 as she lost the us open final to venus that year. she lost in the qtr final of the 2000 us open and the 1st 3 slams of 2001. ok pedantic time over!

Yay Serena  :aparty: Stepped it up when you had to.

Good luck in the next round

Michael Joyce :nerner: This BITCH just sent your girl's arse back home!

 I thought he wanted to call her a bitch. He said he almost messed up when he said, "...this b-girl." Why would he call her that? :( So unnecessary and I was starting to give Maria a break and like her.

Firstly, congrats to both girls on producing a highly entertaining match; it was pretty good quality tennis throughout and the intensity made it engrossing. :yeah:

Serena :worship: Other than a period in the second set where she was a tad too passive, she had the edge in terms of power and that final set was blistering from her. The serve was on fire and she seemed to be moving well after yesterday's ankle scare.

Maria :awww:  Disappointing that she lost the final set by such a wide margin, but it was encouraging to see her make it a lot closer against Serena than their previous 2 encounters. However, I can't help but feel that Maria is lacking the belief to overcome Serena at the moment, and that showed in the clutch moments - Serena played them better and more daringly.

Amazing third set, I hope I can watch it. My VCR stopped recording after the second ended. I was so pissed.

I love how pathetic these Masha fans in here are. Demska, the most bitter of all. Also, Sharapova can't choke a lead she never had in the third. It just doesn't make sense.

Anyway, enough of this, time to celebrate and win that semifinal tomorrow! :yeah:

Demska isn't a Maria fan. Maria is just another tool which he hopes can take Serena down. :p

What happened in that third set? It was like Maria was so relieved she won the second set, she had no fight at all. And she became visibly frustrated.

She can take away a few good things, she nearly won-and really gave away-that first set. Shows she can hang with and even beat Serena-but she has to be firing on all cylinders.

It's hard to believe that a champion at the level of Maria is still figuring out where to toss the ball. Too much mental weakness as well. Yes, it's frustrating playing Serena, but one of smart things her hitting partner said was 'just play your side of the net'. She let Serena get to her, and choked.

I think Maria may have been injured too? i didn't watch so i would know. maybe fatigue from winning 3 titles in the year and 23 out of her 24 previous match may be taking effect here

:spit: :o Demska you're getting more and more pathetic with each post. :haha:

Sharapova : WON Australian Open (GS), Doha (Tier I), Amelia Island (Tier II)

Williams : WON Bangalore (Tier II)

I know which I would rather have :)

I think Maria has a mental block each time she plays Serena that makes the 2004 win a bit flukish, pova is one of those players that is growing on me I support her when she plays players like Justine or JJ .Serena you are da bomb,at least you got some practice for your next match. So much for the double bagels.....at least she will enjoy her baguette.

Me too and I so agree with the rest of your post :worship:

Why the choking talk? Both ladies produced excellent tennis and the WTA needs rivals to contest each other in big tournaments. The quality of tennis should be applauded regardless of which player you support. Serena had to raise her level in the final set because Maria was playing too well. Good job from both ladies!!:worship:

I thought it funny how Maria's serve started to self destruct after Mary-Joe was harping on how much it had improved :weirdo:.
It was a riveting match. Serena pulled some shit out of a bag on Maria. Maria mentally withered.
As for Michael Joyce :tape::help::p:lol:. Maria has been using coaching alot.

Maria is 21

Serena will never win a grand slam again.

Maria has plenty of time.

:haha: She just won one last year and beat the living daylights out of Maria in the process.
