View Full Version : Why can women not return serves that men can?

The return seems to be more about timing and court position, not just strength, so why do women struggle to return 100MPH serves when men often return 130MPH, even 140MPH serves? Maybe when the ball becomes that fast, it actually does require quite a bit of strength to control the return?

Anybody have any insight for me?

Yes, I think you answered yourself but also the times I have seen women players return serves they do fine. Women return men's serves all the time in mixed doubles and if I recall correctly one year Martina Hingis played Hopman Cup and she was returning 120 mph serves from Ivanisevic and he even said he couldn't believe she could do that.

the 100 mph serves are well placed.... its not like they are just sitting in the middle of the box.... And Im sure if there were woman players serving 140 mph.... then the women would get use to playing against them and returning them...

Okay, now figure this, male players don't return 130 mphs serves very often.

Jelena returned amazingly well at Wimbledon in mixed doubles. Absolutely hammered some of Bjorkman's serves.

I've watched Roddick getting owned enough times that even when he serves 125-135MPH consistently, there are guys who can still hand his ass to him.

Yeah, Roddick the king of placement.

They're just not used to it. But some are certainly capable of returning men's serves. Azarenka was killing Bjorkman's serve at Wimbledon.

Also.... note theres a reason why the mens game its more important to hold serve than it is the womens...cause clearly they have problems returning them as well...

Do you remember when Barbora Strycova served an ace against James Blake? :spit: That was at Hopman Cup in 2005 (I think) :p

Well obviously you need some strength to have resistance from the speed of the ball.

Serena served about 3 against Djokovic this year at the Hopman.

Women need to learn the nobel art of the "blocked return"

so few do it :help:

Sometimes, men really struggle against women´s serves :p That actually seems to happen a lot in mixed doubles.

One important factor to note is that all speed is not equal.
A woman's 120mph serve is going to be flatter than a man's serve of the same speed. The men put more spin on their serves and as such is harder to return.

The shots women have trouble returning the most from men are the kick serves. Because they are not used to it. That is definitely an upper body strength issue.

It is a lot harder to block back a good kick serve than a flat serve.

If it's JJ, Juju, Serena or Venus
it all boils down to a lack of penis
even it's a little weedy thing
it helps to counter balance the swing
I know that some of you might be surprised
how the men's return of serve is organ- ised

maybe because of the strength
