Well, true, but Na won't be playing, and Shuai and Zi are both kind of :cuckoo: at the moment, especially Shuai, so who knows. Hope Jie plays singles.

Lindsay reconsidering if Harkleroad can't go, perhaps? I'd say LD could beat Chakvetadze on clay but then they'd draft in Safina and are also very strong in the doubles. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The U.S. team is pathetic, although it will be good experience for some of these girls. It's too bad Harkleroad, Davenport, Serena, and Venus couldn't play. Those four would be an excellent Fed Cup team.

Fed Cup Semifinal Nominations, Liezel Huber to Lead Team USA

The 2008 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas has announced its official team nominations for the April 26-27 semifinals.

Lindsay Davenport, as well as Venus and Serena Williams have decided to skip traveling to Russia for the upcoming tie, leaving doubles specialist Liezel Huber to helm Team USA.

For Huber, who became a nationalized United States citizen last summer, this will be her first opportunity to compete in a team event for her new nation. Headed to Moscow with the co-ranked No. 1 doubles player is a young roster composed of Vania King, Ahsha Rolle, and Madison Brengle.

Russian Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev is expected to field a powerful squad of Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anna Chakvetadze, Dinara Safina, and Elena Vesnina.

I know, this will be embarrasing, I mean is Rolle really going to be playing singles :spit:

At least Liezel and Vania will be a decent doubles team, maybe we'll get a point :o

The only good thing is it's not like the Russians have brought their in-form players, with the way Anna and Dinara have been playing, I almost think he should pick Vesnina to play singles :o

Exactly. The situation is bad but they can do better than Rolle and Brengle ffs :o All of those players you mentioned would stand a better chance.

yea, but Meghann supposedly reinjured herself, Julie i doubt is good on clay, I am upset that Jill Craybas and Meilen Tu weren't chosen they could have done alteast ok.

I kind of understand Brengle because she's young and has some potential so if they're going to lose they might as well give the young players a chance but Rolle makes no sense to me at all.

Oh well, I'm sure she's really excited and will give it her all, so good for her

As embarassingly one-sided as this match is going to be, I actually agree with Zina's decision.

Laura injured her wrist in training last month and Meghann injured herself this week. Melien Tu is retiring at the US Open, so she wouldn't even play the semifinal if we managed to win this, and Lilia has openly talked about wanting to represent the Phillipines in Fed Cup.

That leaves Julie or Jill, two talented enough girls, but players in their late 20s/early 30s and who couldn't possibly have more than another 3 or so years left. And they have absolutely no chance on clay. Ditty got her ass kicked by Errani this week, and Craybas lost 0 and 2 to Dementieva. You mean to tell me they're gonna somehow beat Kuznetsova or Safina or Chakvetadze now?

I think Zina, whether or not she openly admits it, pretty much knows the US has no chance at winning this. So she has two options. Pick the journeywomen as a nice gesture, or pick the young players who for better or worse, are going to be our Fed Cup team for years to come down the road. It's better to get them exposed to this NOW, playing strong teams against crowds totally against them, rather than wait around for all the good American players to retire.

My only question is why Lisa Raymond isn't on the team. It would make total sense for her and Liezel to be playing doubles together, since one would assume that's going to be the US Olympic team.

First of all, "everyone" is not going on about Davenport not playing, and those who are going on about it are doing so because Davenport said earlier this year that she was all in. As much as I've bashed Serena for not playing this year, she never publicly committed.

Well. Raymond/Davenport and the Williams Sisters are the Olympics doubles team.

And like it was said, the US isn't winning. Why not choose Jill and Julie and show some respect? Brengle and Rolle, like King, are modest US prospects of being top 75 lingerers. I would have preferred Julie and Jill. Jill has already proven why she deserves to be on the squad and Julie's story really should have earned her a spot.
