View Full Version : The Clay Season Begins! Time to shine for the WTA "Pushers"!

I have to admit, watching them taunt the top guns on the clay is pretty comical and I myself resort to being a 'pusher' when I get into trouble with my regular game. I love seeing the top players get frustrated at the constant barrage of pace-less groundies, moon balls and SLICE!

So who are your favourite pushers, your most-hated pushers, and fondest memories of the dreaded 'WTA Pusher'...

Mueller, Meusburger, Loit, Penneta. I dont hate them, though, their game is just effective when it comes to clay

I mentioned Penneta as a player who`s game is pretty effective when it comes to clay and not as a pusher. Anyway, probably I missed the point of the thread and sorry for that.

Nice thread!

Pushers get such a bad deal from this board. Isnt it just as good a talent to get every single ball back as it is to hit it hard???

My favourite is Smashnova, the way she got some balls back were incredible

Pennetta is no pusher, she pounds the ball close to the lines on clay:)

I miss Conchi in this season:sad: I would've loved to see her play Sharapova on slow red clay:devil::lol:

People are talking about 'pushers' (a word I would only use to describe crappy club players) as if they don't even deserve to be pros :haha:. It's not as if ALL they do is moonball it back into court. They're obviously incredibly talented players, indicated by the way they can manipulate the ball. It's a shame that power tennis has almost become the only acceptable way of playing for some tennis fans .

Completely agree with you. I hate it now because on the faster courts most points will barely last 10 shots with the increase in the importance of power, its better on the clay.

My favourite match with a pusher was Serena vs. Loit at the AO 2003. It irriated the s*** out of Serena. Went to a 3rd set and Loit was 3 points from the match - but lost. Her slice completely bamboozled Serena, she was very lucky to pull through...

Well sometimes it is interesting to see them play against players who like to win points by themselves, but watching pushers play against each other is :help:

Though their game has translated good on other srfaces, technically I
qualify Sanchez Vicario, and Zvonerava as Pushers

....doesn't help that they also beat Venus at the French!!

Players who are great champs on the clay prove that they have the variety, stamina, and consistency to win. Having a big serve or tons of power won't necessarily do it for you--you've got to bring something else to the table
