 slow start, but solid win.

4 DFs, but 5 aces to match, so I guess that's not so bad.

HORRIBLE bp conversion though  5/9

She's got 1 more round to clean it up before she faces Maria potentially, but Gisela is a decent clay courter and Serena didn't seem TOO troubled out there. Plus I mean this is her first completed match on green clay since her win over Pierce at AI in 2005  so  not a horrible first outing IMO.

Some CLEAR things to work on, but it could have been MUCH worse

Onto the 16s :yeah:

weird match.
1st set: 8 consecutive breaks of serve w/ zero game points. First GP is a set point by Serena
2nd set: both face bps in their 1st service game then hold. And then Gisela gets broken again and then zero bps for the rest of the match.

Def. a lot of stuff Serena needs to improve if she wants to win the title. But it's a decent start to the tournament. Good luck Serena..try to improve you're career win/loss on green clay :D

I'm scared by the first set with 7 breaks, but the second seemed to be much better for Serena.

Do you really think 5/9 is a horrible bp conversion? I think it's pretty good to be honest - well nothing to worry about anyway, it's above 50%. A horrible bp conversion for me would be more like 5/16 .

I guess 5/9 isn't that bad. But she was up 40-15 in two games and still failed to break, so that's why I guess it seems worse than it is

Honestly Serena can get past Maria even if a little scratchy. I do not think Maria has
figured out clay and on top of it has not proven she can win a title and go deep the very
next week to me. So I think were going to see a sloppy error fest fatigued Sharapova. Would
be thrilled if Maria and Serena played a good match on both parts and was a high quality match.
Seems like the juicy matchups are always ruined by playing withdrawing or one being in poor form.

I stopped thiniing like that when Venus lost to Lindsay in AI, lindsay was a cow on ice, venus had won several titles on clay inlcuding a RU at the FO and still managed to lose to Lindsay. If Maria and Serena meet it is NOT a foregone conclusion. They are both playing so well and anything can happen. I do hope though that Serena comes thru.

You were there? Can you give a review? What was happening in the first set when no one was holding serve?

Apr 16th, 2008, 03:24 AM
I think Serena had that same wrist strapped up in Miami as well, so I don't think it's unusual. Plus if Charleston is anything like Atlanta then I'm sure it's cold playing outside and if you've ever tried to play your best tennis in the cold then you know how hard it was, hence the picture of her playing in long sleeves.

I do a full day review in my thread in the Charleston subforum. ;)

But for here, the first set was the less interesting of the two. Serena would hit tons of winners and great shots on the return but Dulko would be doing similar/forcing errors at the least from Serena on HER return game. I think Serena was put off by getting all of her bombs being sent back with slices and lobs instead of pace. Dulko's serve/game, however, fed right into Serena's strike zone, so despite losing serve three times, Serena never looked remotely in trouble.

The second set was amazing though. :worship: TBH Serena played a loose first game, which she lost, but after that it was all quality. The second game was the best tennis of the day, by far.

Serena was moving and SLIDING very well. Dulko surprisingly returned very well...probably because it's clay. She came to net a lot and hit a few good volleys, but her success at net came primarily from smashes. When Dulko was able to hit a low slice for Serena to volley off of, Dulko won the point usually. Her forehand was probably her best shot most consistently.

Very good, fun match. Good job to both. :yeah:

“I got a slow start in general. It was cold and it was just a late match. So those are just the excuses that I’m giving myself as to why I served bad,” said Williams, who is ranked No. 9 in the world.

Hopefully no more night matches for Serena it clearly affected her at the start of the match.

Plus, I want to see her live on TV for the rest of the tournament at 1 p.m. :)

First set, serving was pretty damn horrid with 47% winning on first serve and 30% winning on 2nd serve. Also got broken 3 times in that first set. (Saved 0/3 BPs) but cleaned it up in the second. Well done overall Ree.
