Hey everyone. :wavey: I live in the nearby area of Daniel Island (13-15 minutes by car, 8 miles, close enough) so I will be attending this fabulous event all week! I hope to start this weekend and catch the qualifying, where I'll be doing match reports for every single day I'm there. If anyone wants me to specifically look for their favorites, ask them any questions/send a message, whatever, I'm more than willing to do so if I find them. One of my main objectives is to find Elena Dementieva and conduct an interview with her....we'll see if I can get that accomplished! I can't wait. :)

I hope to see you there. ;) You'll probably be able to spot me by my large headphones and black messenger bag.

Task list so far:
- watch Krajicek play and see how she's playing
- watch Morita, congratulate her on making the top 100
- ask Scheepers if she knows Kai, if she has read his/her thread on her, and if she visits WTAW
- find Sequera and Dulko, tell them that Jesi from Miami says hi :)
- watch Lucic; get update on her level of play

I'm still finding out what days exactly I'm going TBH...I should be doing qualifying and Mon-Wed though. I'll see about afterwards. I can catch the semis/final on TV anyway. :o

SATURDAY REPORT

So, the matches today.

Sun def. Henke 76(5) 63
Stevenson def. Iimija 60 60
Chuang def. Yonemura 62 46 61
Lucic def. Schultz-McCarthy 61 64
Scheepers def. Husarova 64 61
Glatch def. Riske 63 75
Torres Sandoval def. Gilchrist 63 36 63
Haynes def. Black 46 75 64

I brought a notebook with me so I can write down stuff. This is all what I wrote. but on the matches I didn't see much of:
- I only saw the first part of Chuang/Yonemura in the second set. Chuang couldn't keep a ball in, and Poutchek was complaining about Chuang's shot selection/level of hitting of the ball. Really bad set, but when I came back NEARLY an hour later, it was 45 in the second. Too bad I didn't see her when she won any games.

Scheepers/Husarova was ridiculously boring. I saw the first three games and scrammed. Husarova was playing alright, though, I was surprised she lost.

Torres has THE most irritating grunt in the game I have ever heard. I couldn't watch her match at all. :help:

I just didn't feel up to watching Glatch/Riske. Both play the exact same way, which isn't fit for clay at all, and from what I saw it was SO boring. Pass.

Sun v. Henke

Got here at 9:30, walked around a little bit. I have no water bottle. YIKES. But it looks like a tan this week is plausible. Most people here are teenagers that are in a tennis team at school, it'd appear. I haven't seen any players practice yet but that's just one goal. I'll go to the MD ceremony at noon for a bit, then watch hot mess Alex Stevenson. :D The weather is beautiful, nice and sunny and breezy. Some lady next to me was kind of talkative, irritating.

Tiantian is BEAUTIFUL, I can't believe how pretty she is. If practice is anything like the match Sun is going to hit out. A lot. Both hit very flat, Henke has solid skills at net. Sun's BH DTL is fantastic - she got the early break after Henke was up 40-0, she's exposing Henke's FH, which comes up short in the court often. Lots of fun rallies already. Vanessa is the one changing pace, she needs to since Sun is overpowering her in the flat baseline rallies. I love Sun's reactions. Sun was up 40-0 too but GREAT point to break back, with a Henke BH DTL passing shot winner. Sun likes to hit around her FH. She fell down 2-4 with careless errors, but great game to come back. Henke's hit like one winner, I think. Sun should win. I'm the only "woo-wooing." Second Henke winner, inside out BH. "COME ON" from Sun. :) Another. Sun has a good second serve. She REALLY pounds the ball, such good defense too, probably why Henke can't hit winners. At 4-4 0-40 Henke comes up with two great points, then a netcord for her keeps a ball that was obviously going out into the court, deuce. Failed drop shot, adv Sun, game sun. *54. :) So many people are here. Sun was up 30-0 but Henke fought really hard and hit some wonderful winners.

TB:
0-1 - Sun return error
1-1 - Henke FH into the net
2-1 - driving rally which Sun wins
2-2 - long rally, Sun slice long
3-2 - Sun inside out FH winner
4-2 - same exact point, basically, Sun inside out FH winner
4-3 - Sun drives FH volley, then Henke hits winner
4-4 - ball hits weird spot, Sun can't do anything
4-5 - Sun's FH goes into the net
5-5 - return into the net for Henke
6-5 - Sun FH winner into the BH corner
7-5 - Sun's return hits the baseline, Henke hits a weak lob, and Sun smashes it for the set

(the graph below isn't anything that I wrote, but I recall it)
I missed the first four/five games of the second set, but I checked back and saw Sun was up 2-0 then when I came back for good it was like 2-2. Overall, Sun/Henke was a pretty good match, very entertaining, some drama with a few calls (one of which completely got into Henke's head when she was serving at 3-4 in the second set and she completely lost focus), some Chinese fans saying crazy things in Chinese in the stands that a lot of us laughed at, and Sun looked REALLY good. She should be top 100, for sure, if she can control her power more often.

---

I didn't write a full match report for any other, just some small notes. I hope it's enough.

Stevenson v. Iijima

My first time ever seeing Alex play! It's noon now and really hot, but a breeze is coming in. I heard her say, "Yeah, I'm Alex, haha" guess people know her! Alex looks okay. By far the unfittest of all the pros I've seen. Big crowd again. Her opponent wears Yonex. :) I also saw Vania King and a couple of other girls, but I didn't recognize them. I thought I saw Elena practice and I almost fell to my knees, but it was just this ugly bitch (SIDENOTE: what a bitch she'd turn out to be...). DAMN. I will find her though. This event is very nice so far, I like it.

1st point was fantastic, ending in a drop shot winner for Alex. Alex looks solid, but Iijima is useless. Alex won the first set 60, boring as all hell. Now I'm watching Timea Bacszinskzy (I can never spell her name) practice. She's looked at me a few times, like she can't believe anyone would want to watch her practice.

New addition: there's a Russian player watching Chuang and Yonemura, and I asked her if I could ask her who she is, and she said no, then laughed to her friend while her friend gave me a bad look. She had a ponytail. I'm not sure who she could be...

(I eventually found out it was Tatiana Poutchek, I figured it out when I asked to myself, "Why would a player watch another player play?" She was scouting and will play Chuang tomorrow. I hope bitch gets her ass beat.)

- I saw Iijima walk in the back where the players reach the practice courts, but went inside some building instead. She didn't look too upset.
- Watching Huber/Black pracice
- Dinara is practicing
- AND VERA :D :D
- I spoke with BBB! She was by far the friendliest of all the players I talked to, and I shook her hand the opposite way   I was really nervous since I have so much respect for her playing and keeping on
- Sugiyama has been on her cellphone in the same spot for at least the past hour
- Timea's coach is HOT
- I wished Haynes good luck for later today on the practice court, and she said thanks and smiled
- I see Wozniack running around a practice court

Lucic v. BBB

Lucic is flying winners everywhere and BB is unable to match Mirjana's pace. This match is flying SO fast that I don't even really know what's going on, just that Mirjana looks unstoppable. Brenda's attitude is amazing, she's smiling after Lucic winners and yelling in Dutch to herself after stupid UEs. I finished the first set, and Lucic looked on pace for a second set bagel. The one game BBB won was two unreturned serves, a BH into the net, and a missed passing shot. A lot more of that happened from what I saw in the second set, but Lucic stayed strong. I can't stress just how amazing she was for a lot of this match, but she dropped her level a bit for the last couple of games in the second. I do think her level was perhaps exaggerated since Brenda can only slice from the back, and her volleys aren't good at all. Lucic was sending back Brenda's bombs with interest, though, fantastic to see.

- Sequera and Domachowska practicing on different courts
- I think I see Meng Yuan? She looks mean as all hell so I didn't say hi
- King and Craybas are together, Jill sounds so sweet
- Zvonareva, Craybas, and Krajicek all together with their coaches, laughing at something
- Misa and Jill were HILARIOUS, Jill was asking Misa about what Misa had done the past three days, then Misa just stopped, looked around, and said nothing. Then Jill said, "At Amelia?" and Misa said "Yeah!" like it was the perfect cover-up for her  Another thing with these two was they were having this amazing rally, it just wouldn't end, for sure at least 80 shots combined, then Misa cried out "JILL! JUST MAKE AN ERROR!" and everyone started laughing  Jill then flung a ball into the bottom of the net and her coach said "Don't make it so obvious" - these two are obviously good friends
- I spoke with a friend of Jill's about Jill's career, why he didn't go into the ATP, and we talked about where both of them are in the ranks
- btw DutchieGirl, Misa's form looked pretty solid. She could have gone for more width on her shots, particularly on the FH, but she wasn't slicing her BH at all like I had seen in Auckland, she looks very healthy and fit
- Jill's coach called Misa "Mischa" and I asked her if it was "Misa" or "Mischa" since fuck if I know how to pronounce a Dutch nickname, and she just kind of looked at me flatly and said "It's Misa"
- not too long afterward Misa told Jill to stay in the spot where she was and Jill said "Anything for you Mischa"
- as per request, I told Dulko that Jezi from Miami said hi. Again, another plain look back at me, and she said "Okay, thanks." I still don't think she's that pretty, even up close, but whatever.

I got Zvonareva's autograph after she finished practice. I said, "Hi Vera, I'm a really big fan and I was wondering if I may have an autograph?" and she, with yet another plain look, said sure, and I said thanks and wished her well for this week. THEN I got a resemblance of a smile. These players must see inside my soul and realize I'm a bad person, I guess. Brenda was the only nice one with whom I spoke.

Haynes/Black

Then, finally, Haynes/Black. That match was so good I don't even know what to say. Both were "COME ON"ing (Angie was also "allez"ing like she was French, does anyone know why she does that? ), Haynes was being a diva with her screaming at herself and fist pumping/staring down Cara after basically every point she won. This was such an intense, dramatic, and WINNER filled match. The crowd was loving up, and some of the drama was built up further when some rain started to pour at 46 *44 30-40 and play was delayed. Afterwards, while the level remained the same, the atmosphere was destroyed since everyone left, basically. I yelled out to Angie a few times, saying "great shot" or "come on," and she got herself so pumped out. I think that's what won her the match, basically, her intensity and desire to win was just bigger than Cara's. Her shot selection as well as net approaches could be MUCH improved, and she should go for her serve more, but she managed to withstand Cara. Cara was so resilient, she got so many balls back, had some good volleys at net (easily the only person I saw today who could actually win points up at net), but her playing like your standard (essentially) doubles specialist didn't help.

But wow, that match was :worship:. I got Angela's autograph after the match since I was so impressed with her, but she obviously didn't feel the same. She kind of slumped off the court with her boyfriend/coach (WHO IS REALLY REALLY HOT) after signing some more autographs/balls. Despite being a rough score, both were at such a high level, she should be happy with herself. I hope she qualifies and can make a few rounds.

If you see her practicing early or walking to/from practice.... you can definitely say hi to her and wish her luck... she is happy I think for anybody to know who she is.

I'm not really following anybody else at Charleston, so just look in on Sun as far as she goes, and wish her well, in exchange for all my info. :p :wavey:

Thanks for the report. btw, her nickname it's not Dutch, it's Czech. ;) And it's pronounce "Me-sha". But even her coach doesn't seem to say it right, he says it Mischa, like Mischa Barton - which isn't right. (He also calls her "Mish" and she doesn't seem to care so  ). :) And I would hope she isn't still slicing her backhand, coz it was meant to be better since she played IW (not that it seems to help her game right now). ;)

I actually did congratulate Sun after she won, I forgot about that, Drake. Also, when she was serving for the match and got down 0-40, she got it to 30-40 and I yelled out "YOU CAN DO IT!" she didn't seem to care and her coach looked at me funny. She did eventually serve it out, and I then congratulated her after her win. She just looked at me blankly and said thanks. Again another case of a player not responding to me well.

The OOP for tomorrow isn't out. :o And also, I'm really sunburned--I don't know how long I can even be there on Sunday. It really hurts, but I'll get my aloe vera and sunscreen. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it if I can stay all day.

:sobbing: And that just isn't a superfluous smiley. I can't go today. I am just way too sunburned to continue on today. I feel SO awful, I already got my ticket and I wanted to see everyone today. Maybe I can go later in the day and hang in the back for the practice courts and watch Angela, I might be able, but I can barely move. Everything that touches me hurts.

I should be able to go for the next three or four days, but...30 dollars wasted on burn medicine and sunblock. I can't believe I thought I was special and wouldn't get sunburn by applying sunblock ONCE.

I am so sorry guys. I will make it up for the next four days, I promise.

Well, Poutchek lost to Chuang, so it all evened out. :)

I will for certain be there on Monday, although if I can't, the only reason why would be that I haven't paid for my intro package from Mon-Wed yet, but I highly doubt that's sold out, so I should be fine.

Most of these matches look awesome to me, but Radwanska/Domachowska, Bychkova/Voskoboeva, Sun/Rolle, and Timea/Srebotnik will be my main targets. I will catch Zvonareva, Szavay, Cirstea, Sugiyama, Stevenson, and Ditty as much as possible too.

The only matches I don't care about doubles and Dulko/Molik, Salerni/Dellacqua, Wozniack/Lino, Chan/Strycova. Although YJFan or whatever his/her name is I'd imagine would like a litle bit of a report on Chan ( :p ) so I'll watch her match for a few games here and there. But the other three I won't watch any of, more than likely.

I feel awful. My nose is blowing and my left eye is leaking water for some reason (but it probably has to do with the fact some oil from my sunscreen got into my eye). It got really cold and windy in the last two/three hours and I'm reacting to it. Is the tennis even worth getting sunburns and eyeaches (???) and colds? Jesus Christ. I feel like popping my left eye out. I'm just going to write down what I wrote.

MONDAY REPORT

Sun v. Rolle:
first game - 2 Sun winners & DFs, Rolle hits ball out but comes to net for winner, Sun FH is cracking
- potential to be really good - Rolle has a very good serve
Rolle pushing Sun side to side
- Rolle's game is very pleasing to watch - slices Bh, hits around FH, likes to come to net, smart player, good serve--almost Steffi-esque
Sun doesn't have nearly as many options - bang the ball side to side and fild the open court, expose Rolle's slightly suspect movement
- she is really not playing well, resquest coach at *41 Rolle
KILLER slice at *41 deuce from Rolle DTL, then ace
I'm pretty sure I see Domachowska watching this match

- Lino & AMG practicing together, as well as Cornet/Shaughnessy
- Dementieva & someone I don't know (maybe Rodionova?)
- I think I saw YJC walk around...
- saw Elena's million dollar smile, she's having fun
- I hear her grunting, she's overpowering this poor girl
- told her she has great volleys after terrible volleys/approach to net, said thanks
- Chakvetadze and Poutchek practicing separately
- Voskoboeva & Schruff - what happened to Bychkova?
- Schruff drop shot returns a lot - hilarious
- I spoke with Ditty - told her InTheZone's/Paul's request to come to Forest Hills and that he is her biggest fan - she said she'll consider going there, she hadn't really thought about it, she was super nice despite losing
- Casey and Pratt are talking to each other before Case's match starts, Molik talks to them after her loss
- Stevenson is walking to her match with several security guards and her mother behind her
- Errani sitting in the back on her cellphone after win
- Ruano Pascual & Domachowska practicing together
- Safina practicing again
- I see Patty! huge crowd watching her practicing
- I wished Timea well for today, she said thanks - before she was speaking with Alize
- Galya playing well - talking to her coach - very upset with herself - is SO volatile - her coach is impressed with my "LICHNA" after a great point - she is about to cry after yet another Schruff drop shot

I talked with Elena briefly after she finished practicing. I won't go too much into detail, but she is so beautiful. Her skin color is just radiant--she seems so white on court, but her skin is actually a perfect golden brown tone. Just from her practice and how she reacted to everything it's obvious she's enjoying life and who/where she is at the moment. She even laughed at one of my stupid jokes when she signed my autograph. I almost got my interview with her, but she thought I was part of the official press/media after I told her I was the official writer for her website, so I'll have to try and ask her again. She didn't seem against the idea, though. She is just amazing.

- Cirstea is gorgeous, looks much better in person than in photos/on TV
- Chan is fun, but hopeless...not sure if only on clay. Strycov just gets every ball back and then Chan hits an UE
- Szavay looked AMAZING - literally and figuratively
- FH & BH both great, serve on tune, she looks dangerous this week, but in second set she would set up points well and then make an UE out of nowhere much more often than before--still good performance, though
- Kata was on FIRE, the score was tighter than it should have been; she was hitting winners everywhere, and Timea wasn't playing badly at all, there were lots of fun rallies and Katarina was serving and coming to net with great precision; ultimately, though, the match came down to the usual song and dance against Timea: hit to her FH. if Kata wasn't such a smart player, Timea might have been able to win this match. she needs to work on that FH bad
- I see Timea and Schruff laughing together in German a few hours later right before their doubles match
- I HEAR Azarenka practice during Domachowska/Radwanska

Which leads to the ultimate match today, Radwanska/Domachowska. I don't even know how to describe this match, it just had everything--stunning winners, rallies, EXCRUCIATING games, lots of momentum shifts, the crowd absolutely loved it. Again, best match of the day is the last one on Althea Gibson, I feel sorry for the bastards wasting their time on stadium or watching doubles (I swear to god, Craybas/Krajicek had a HUGE crowd, it was honestly like Venus or Serena was there...everyone was watching this match). Anyway, Domachowska was so impressive, her FH and serve rock, she can change the pace very well just like Radwanska, and her inside out FH is just :hearts:. She had a gameplan against Radwanska today, it was so obvious. Radwanska won a lot of points using her BH DTL since Marta was so far on the other side of the court hitting those fabulous into out FHs...Marta needs to work on that, her volleys, and overall tactics. She could have won this match if she'd gotten a few more returns in and taken a few more balls out of the air instead of let them bounce and get Radwanska back in the point. You have GOT to hit that winner past Aga almost instantly when you get her out of position since she's right back in it almost instantly. Also, it was so nice to see from Marta a girl who actually HIT a second serve with depth and kick and not have it go out or be ultimately attackable. Radwanska's guile, court positioning, and defense (even offense) were just beautiful. She even has good volleys! She won quite a few of the points up at net. The other thing I feel I ought to mention is that at *34 deuce in the third, Marta got a code violation for coaching...not sure what happened, but it obviously got to her. She hit four UEs in a row, then two winners, one UE, and Aga finished the match with a BH DTL volley.

The match would have been even better had it been able to go on, but it was superb. Also, Zvonareva/Chuang was :tape: :help: :tape: :help:. I missed five games of Aga/Marta to watch that HOT HOT mess. Vera was back to dawdling and crying and getting upset after every point she lost. Both played horrible, but Chuang was just so much worse.

I saw a little of Sugi's match...it was all Morita errors, from what I saw. Stevenson/Jidkova was pretty fun from what little I saw...the TB was INCREDIBLE. Alex was so pumped up, there was a big crowd turnout too. I'd expect Jankovic/Stevenson to be the Wednesday night match. I'll be there. :D Anyway, Jidkova is kind of useless, but she gets lots of balls back--probably why the first set was so tight. I saw one point of King/Cirstea...a Cirstea DF. A few points of craybas/krajicek were fun. Ditty was pretty useless, but so was Errani--Ditty just made more UEs. Lino played her usual game and she basically just outsmarted Wozniack, but overall unspectacular match. I saw none of the rest of the matches I haven't mentioned.

Boring day, but one fantastic match might be able to make up for the cold and :weirdo: eye I have right now.

Hey..... thanks for supporting Sun. You know she and her coach were like, "how does anybody even know who I am?" :p

Or, maybe you looked like a freak wtih your sunburn and your crazy eye.  (Just kiddin' ya.)

Hope you are feeling a little bit better.

Typical guy thing.  Pace yourself.

Nice report, fun to read :) I wonder what the grounds look like.
Reading this just makes me itch for Montreal this summer :)
Are the courts close proximity to each other & the practice courts?
Rest up and get in shape for tomorrow :)

Please ask Maria Sharapova if she will marry me!

She was practicing earlier today. HUGE crowd around her, and every time I looked at her she was smiling. I really don't like her though, so I can't pretend to want to have her autograph.

My head hurts and I need to go to bed, but check my posts...Serena, Chakvetadze, and Marion comments have been made. I saw patty watch Cirstea/Chakvetadze with Rainer....Azarenka played really well, Mattek/Yuan was fun, and Vesnina has no talent at all. Szavay/Sugiyama had its moments, but far too many UEs, still solid though. Cornet/Krajicek was a joke--Krajicek was the better player but still lost. :weirdo:

More details tomorrow though. It was so cold and windy again today...I don't know how much more cold and wind I can take. I may even leave early tomorrow since I have no interest to see most of those matches.

LudwigDvorak

Sorry for the delays. I'll do today's report. It may be short.

Bartoli v. Zvonareva

This match was incredibly dramatic. A flat out bitchfest, to be honest. I came in late in the first set, Marion hit a few errors, but I noticed she was dictating play. I noticed against Dellacqua too she was being UBER aggressive, trying to hit every shot as a winner...against a better player today, that tactic wasn't working as well. Bartoli was dictating SO much, and hitting SO many winners, I couldn't believe Vera was up 64 *31. She had to save a few BPs to get to GP, but Bartoli just kept fighting, whatever Vera was throwing at her. For a few games, Bartoli looked invincible--I thought Wimbledon-level Marion was back, I truly honestly did. From 31 to 35 I counted, Marion didn't make a single unforced error. When Vera got her last game in that second set, Marion started to let up...in the final game Vera had three BPs, but Marion managed to keep her head together, as Vera made UEs. I believe most of the third was on TV, which is unfortunate, since the first two sets were so rich in quality, drama, fight, and intensity. The third set was just pathetic. :help: Overall, this was an incredible match, but I don't like Marion's new gameplan she's instituting.

Dementieva v. Azarenka:
I won't even talk much about this match. This was the worst match I've seen all week. Elena's groundstrokes were off, she wasn't able to hit through on either, her BH DTLs were soft and sitting up (the three or so she hit), and her FH kept flying or into the net. She was lucky as HELL to win that match in straight sets. I think I probably looked crazy out there because I was so into it, trying to will Elena to win. :tape: Fortunately for Elena, Azarenka was just as bad. Elena hit only a few defensive slices, no drop shots, changed pace/variety...however, two people I've spoken to about this match thought it was great. I thought it was garbage.

Sharapova v. Perebiynis:
Tatiana played great. :) She was so calm, self-assured, and composed. Her groundstrokes are very pretty and clean, but she lacked the pace to really hang with Maria. Her defensive slices and serve gave her those seven games, basically. Maria was very off for much of the match, but like with any Maria match, for every unforced error, she hit about five winners, so she kept the balance up. When Tatiana had SP, she hit a FH error, and Maria basically rolled from there. I remember Perebiynis played Serena a tough match in Moscow last year...now I know why. If Maria keeps up the fairly good form, she will win more than three games tomorrow.

Schnyder v. Radwanska:
Schnyder played the single best performance out of anyone I've seen all week. Radwanska was hitting her FH DTL beautifully as well, the only shot of hers that was really working of hers, overall she wasn't shabby, but Patty's spins and angles, not to mention gorgeous to watch live, were just too much for Aga. She really doesn't handle players with little pace very well. She moonballed a lot, but Patty would just take them fairly early and spin them CC with her FH, rinse and repeat. There were so many great shots and various gameplans in this match, it was just SO pleasing to watch. Schnyder is still a masterclass performer sometimes, I wish she could do this more often. Just seeing Patty live brings a new level of respect for her to me...just what she does on court can't really be appreciated until you see her in person, I don't think. The level of talent necessary for she does when she's playing well is astounding...congratulations Patty. :)

I only saw a few games of Serena/Kata...didn't see any of Cirstea/Cornet. Safina/Szavay was TERRIBLE, although Agnes played pretty well I guess. Dina is just a :weirdo: unfortunately.

So are you saying the reason why Bartoli is losing so many matches this year is that she's been over agressive?

Well, I only saw her two matches in Charleston, and yes, she was taken to three by being stupidly over aggressive against Dellacqua, which wasn't necessary at all, and then the same against Zvonareva, which worked BEAUTIFULLY for a stretch of five games, but that's it.

If she's been playing like this all year...she needs to stop it. Now.

:spit: i thought the same thing when i saw her in hammond....was she on the practice courts for 459303 hours a day with any and everybody that would hit with her?

Nah, she lost in Q2R, so I didn't see much of her, thank Christ.

Well, Friday night was my last visit to the event this year. I did, however, see Elena win three matches live, which was great. I got autographs from both her and her semifinal opponent, Haynes, Radwanska, and Domachowska. I don't like the idea of autographs, but whatever, I got those last three because I was so impressed by them at this event.

Dementieva v. Schnyder:
Crazy match as always from these two. Patty won the first seven points, then Elena won a slew in a row herself. Patty didn't hit her first winner until *52 Dementieva, then she hit six (four to break) to get to *54, got to BP on Elena's serve, and at this point in the match the momentum was REALLY switching to Patty, but Elena hit a lot of big first serves, including two aces, and she managed to close it out on the second try. In the second set, the quality got higher, especially early on, but the linecalls got worse and worse. So many balls that looked out were in for Elena, but the exact opposite happened with Patty. The umpire was HOPELESS. Patty was hopeless, because she was trying to slug it out with Elena, not mix up the pace and drag Elena everywhere on the court...and of course, Patty won the slugfest, although Elena wasn't entirely perfect either. She served well, hit some great angled backhands and she had some great forehand winners/unreturnables, but she still isn't at her best I don't think. She didn't hit any BH DTLs unless she absolutely had to. She also had this WEIRD habit of stepping inside the court on Patty's second serve, but she couldn't do anything with them since A.) it's clay B.) Patty's spinny second ball would bounce up. On a HC, it would have worked, but not here. She wasted a lot of chances to come inside the forecourt more often, but she was still pretty good from the back of the court. Not at Dubai level, though. I don't see her winning this title, but making the final is possible if Vera is a little off.

Zvonareva v. Jankovic:
The best match tonight! :D Vera was aggressive from the very first point, trying to come in, trying to hit winners, she had her gameplan and was ready to execute it, for sure. She returned fabulously and her first serve was giving her good shots to set up and hit. That's the best part about Vera's game: her strokes are so flexible and fluid, she can hit anywhere in the court, and she was running JJ ragged. In the first set, of course. In the second, she got more defensive, JJ started playing better, the crowd got louder, etc etc. Looking back now, Vera didn't get too upset at herself tonight, I was so impressed with that. She questioned a few line calls, would look really upset for a few points here and there, but she'd get over it quickly. That was her ultimate downfall against JJ in Miami, she got upset at every little thing. On JJ, though, I didn't see her smile once. She clearly wasn't herself, but she wasn't playing badly in the slightest--it was until 32 or 42 in the third when she started hitting some weird unforced errors. She was the one getting upset at a lot of line calls, but that's how she always is, so I didn't really think that was odd. Gosh, seeing JJ lose live, along with Chakvetadze, this tournament could only get better if Elena won the title. :hearts:

I saw the doubles match too...Chan and Azarenka were the saviors of that match. Vesnina and Chuang :help: :help: :help:. That's all I can say. Azarenka/Vesnina won, but Chan was the performer of the night. For sure.

There you have it folks!
