The most compelling match of the day, and the only one of the eight that went the distance, was the girls 16s final, which saw top seed Eugenie Bouchard of Canada defeat No. 2 seed Christina Dinu of Romania 7-6(8), 3-6, 6-4. Both girls had reached the final without dropping a set, so it was unsurprising that their meeting was so closely contested.

Bouchard trailed 4-2 in the third set, but broke Dinu at 3-4 to pull even. She faced a break point in the next game after a double fault at 30-30, but the 14-year-old's forehand came to her rescue, with three clean winners coming from that side to give her the lead.

Faced with the pressure of serving down 4-5, Dinu never held a game point, and a double fault on the second match point was a disappointing ending to a dramatic encounter.

"I feel really confident with my forehand right now," said Bouchard. "I'm happy how I played with it today, as I was definitely able to control the point and be aggressive with it."

Bouchard wasn't surprised that Dinu came back to force a third set after losing such a close tiebreaker.

"I was ahead early, I think I went up 2-0, but then she started playing well. She's a great player--I have to give it to her, she was playing well to come back."

Both Bouchard and Dinu are headed to Miami for the Orange Bowl, and again are seeded No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in the 16s division there.

Genie may be next Canadian tennis gem

TOM TEBBUTT
Globe and Mail Update
April 12, 2009 at 8:31 PM EDT

If, as many Canadian tennis officials hope, Eugenie Bouchard becomes a force on the world scene, she will have the cachet of a distinctive first name.
Bouchard, who at 15 won the Canadian under-18 indoor championship in Toronto on Saturday, is a non-identical twin. Her parents, Julie and Mike, named her sister Beatrice and her after the daughters of Prince Andrew and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson.
“They call me Genie in a Bottle sometimes,” Bouchard said jokingly. “But my real name is nice, too.”
In January at the Australian Open, this reporter watched her second-round junior match against eventual champion Ksenia Pervak of Russia and was told by Sven Groeneveld, a consultant for adidas who works with its players, that his company first noticed her when she was 11.
In women's tennis, it's not just solid strokes that count. Bouchard, who lives in upscale Westmount in Montreal, also has good looks to go with a promising game. It is no accident adidas has glamour girls Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki under contract, and has recently signed Bouchard to what is believed to be a lucrative clothing deal.
On Saturday, the blonde, lean, 5-foot-9 Bouchard overpowered fellow Quebecker Marianne Jodoin 6-4, 7-5 to become, at 15 years and a month, one of the youngest winners of the indoor event.
Helen Kelesi from Richmond, B.C., in 1983, and Sharon Fichman of Toronto in 2003, were both victorious at 13.
Bouchard spent much of 2007 and 2008 training at the tennis academy in Sunrise, Fla., run by former American player Nick Saviano. But she is now based at the National Tennis Centre at Jarry Park in Montreal.
“I was able to practise with a lot of great players,” Bouchard said about Florida, where she did her schooling online. “It showed me real tennis, outdoors. Indoors, it's kind of different, more first-strike. The point's over quickly. Outdoors, you got to work for the point. It's a different mindset.”
So far in 2009, she has played six International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior events in Australia and South America, compiling a 10-6 record and reaching No. 84 in the ITF's under-18 rankings.
One of her best friends is Laura Robson, the British phenom who won last year's Wimbledon junior title at 14. Exactly 35 days younger than Robson, Bouchard said: “It's cool because we can be together when we travel. We talk to each other a lot on Facebook.”
Bouchard, whose mother is of Irish ancestry, prefers the English pronunciation of her first name, and it is written without a French accent.
While she lives on the same tony, quaint street in Westmount as former prime minister Brian Mulroney, her formative years were not spent at high-end private tennis clubs. She began playing on public courts in nearby Murray Park and at the popular commercial indoor club on Nun's Island.
It was there she had her first strong feelings for the sport. “I started at five. My parents put my twin sister [she also has a younger sister and brother] and me in groups. It was more like games, jumping hoops – not playing tennis. I didn't like the groups because I wanted to play tennis. My sister loved them because they were fun. My parents realized I actually wanted to play tennis and started signing me up for more – twice a week, three times a week, [in] groups and then private [lessons] later on.”
Tennis Canada recognizes Bouchard's potential and a coach at its National Training Centre, Roberto Brogin from Italy, has been assigned exclusively to her.
With an improving serve, ground strokes that pack serious punch, especially a wickedly flat two-handed backhand, decent volleys and genuine competitive grit, it is no surprise Bouchard has lofty ambitions.
“Short term,” she said, “I'm doing all the [junior Grand] Slams this year, so it will be a good experience. Long term, I want to be No.1 in the world and win a real Grand Slam.”
Tennis Canada hopes it has found a gem in the girl her investment banker father calls “Genie.”

They showed the final here today between Bouchard and Jodoin, have to say I was pretty impressed with the look of her game. Really nice serve and solid technique on her groundstrokes...She hits the ball really nicely :) Only thing I think she can build on more is her defensive skills, but it's not often you see someone so young have solid weapons like she has. Hopefully she can keep moving up :D

It looks like she is going to play an entire season of World Team Tennis for the Kansas City Explorers. The Team also include Kveta Peschke who will probably play most of the singles matches. She is going to at least have to play womens doubles and the way the substitutions works could also play singles against some of the top players in the world. Her first match is scheduled to be on the fifth of July.

Climbing nicely up the rankings too! Established in the top 600 now. A few more little tournies in the next few months and she could well be top 400 or top 300. We could use another canadian in the top 200 to stir up the mix and get the other six back on their game.

Yep she's with Lagardêre management team and the tournment is owned (at east sponsored, I'm not too sure about the deal) by Lagardere. As Genie is one of their best Junior I guess that's opening her some good doors. As the even is quite weak she could get a nice draw and have a good run that would boost her confidence. After a match like today, you can tell that what she needs is a bit more confidence and taht match would have been hers.

Genie lost 6-2 6-2  But a great experience for her.

Only 2/10 BP converted. Made a few errors, but played some nice points as well. And to be honest, Petkovic didn't play too well.

After the match Genie said this was a good experience for her. That she didn't play as well as she hoped, it was a bit up and down. And that is was a tough match against the nr 10 in the world.

Petkovic said Genie has some great strokes and is a huge talent, but she was inexperienced. And if she put in the hard work, she could go a long way.

Yes, I think Genie showed what she was able to do, she just needs to work on consistency as she said she was really up and down. Tracy Austin was in almost awwwww about her game lol which is a good sign I guess.

:)

The intensity is so much bigger in the seniors. They keep fighting for every point (well most of the time ;)). To be able to win a match you have to be consistent. But matches like these will help her. She knows she needs to improve a few things, keep working hard and getting more experience, learning how to play the big points and making the right choices on court. And then the results will surely come.

This should give her a lot of confidence for the US Open where hopefully she can win her first Grand Slam in singles! :yeah:

That's the Marie-Ève Pelletier's lol that's its name.....huge indeed for a junior tournment, probably one of the biggest I've seen on the junior tour.

Nice start for her in the USO! Will play Nicole Gibbs now, might be a tough test...

I think MArino's only asset in double is her serve and smashes, that being said it can works pretty well on this surfaces.
