This to celebrate that the very promising Danish talent Caroline Wozniacki won her first Danish senior championship today, the youngest ever player to do so.

Go Caroline and congratulations on your first title!

This picture is an older one, but it was the best I had as no pictures from the Danish Championships have appeared yet.

Well I actually think she is in the best half of the draw.
But surely a little unlucky - Tamira got the last seeded spot. Caroline was so close to get a bye in the first round in a very big tournament :-)

It's a "median draw" - could have been better, and could have been worse (how about Sharapova in 2nd round?)...

Caroline vs. Maria would be fun.

I dont think this draw is too bad! Kirilenko isnt playing her best and have had it very difficult so far this year! Na Li as so up and down - so who knows where she is at? With a little luck Caro can go far!

I don't think so. Acccording to the Pacific Life home side

and http://www.pacificlifeopen.com/3/tournament/tv/2008.htm
Nobody is sending before saturday the 15th the 2nd round, and Eurosport is not one of the broadcasters. SHAME

SO if there is anybody on the board who can record and upload her games YOU will be very popular. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Caroline will be playing Melinda Czink(HUN)143,whom she beat last year in Las Vegas 6-1 6-3, in the early hours of Thursday CET.
I would say she has a good chance.

2nd set 51 mins Cink was much more in the game and broke Caroline second game.
At 5-4 Caroline to serve for match, Cink broke her to 5-5.
Cink won her serve to 6-5. Caroline holds her serve 6-6.
Caroline starts well in tie break 3-0 then 3-3, 4-3,5-3, 5-4, bite nail time.
Caroline serves to 6-4 and takes the game.

Will have to play better to win over Kirilenko rank 29 bad form or not.

Nice win, and she now really can beat Kirilenko.

Definately! Kirilenko has alot of points. 949points against Caro's 621. But Kirilenko's points are based on 27 tourneys against Caro's 19.
Caro makes an average of 32,68 point per tournament against Masha's 35,14. So not big difference here!
Kiri does have more experience, but I think we will see an interesting match that can go both ways.

This should be interesting. I hope CW gets through to the next round.
Then her apponent is probably Zi Yan (CHN) WR 43
If she gets this far she will probably meet KUZNETSOVA (RUS) WR 3 in the QF.

I have kind of a sad report about Caroline. I like her very much and watched her match on Wednesday. Yesterday, I saw her practicing. She sat down and her coach was telling her something and demonstrating what he meant and talking to her a lot. In the meantime, her mother and father were picking up balls around the court. Then they sat down one on each side of Caroline. The coach evidently was giving a synopsis of what he had told Caroline. Then the father very animatedly responded to them. The coach replied. This went on and on, and Caroline's head dropped and she was looking down at the court like I've seen teenagers and children do when they just want something to be over but have no power over it. And finally the coach was talking less and less and scuffing the court with his shoe as the father talked. Then he asked Caroline if she was ready to play. She stood up quickly and they began hitting. She seemed happier. But, her father then started calling out instructions to her loudly. It always began with her name "Caroline" "Caroline" Yelling at her until I just wanted to yell "shut up" back at him. Finally I had to walk away. I hope that was just an exception and not what usually goes on.

Do you think her currant form comes from pure luck? Hard work. This is pro sport, its hard work to be one of the best, its not fun, at most its interesting. Im happy her dad is taking charge of her, else she would get no where. Who knows better how to push Caro than her parents.

But then, every thing is open too interpertation.
If her dad is a really awfull "Tennis Dad" I would hope that the rabid Danish tabloids, would have picked up on it by now. They would luvvv a good "misused" blond teanage sports star.

You know, everyone can have a bad day, and this may not be the normal thing. But, I think at the very least, he is an opinionated fellow and quite outspoken. :)

I'm not thinking he mistreats Caroline, but he seemed so aggressive and directive.

On the other hand, at the match in the evening, The mother, father, and coach did not sit next to the court but a bit higher up. Caroline didn't look to them all the time for support. I just am hoping that things go well for her. I'll go to see her tomorrow if I can. So many matches that it is hard to see all I want.

btw, Caroline played great against Kirilenko. I like Kirilenko, so it wasn't the happiest match for me, but I was cheering Caroline. She's a killer. She wants every point. She went to the net quite a bit, and I always like to see that. Not sure she can employ that tactic with a harder hitting opponent. Sorry, I can't stay all next week to cheer her along, but I have to leave on Tuesday.

Time for some comments from Caro about tomorrows match.

"Im playing really well right now. Im sure I`ve gotten a lot of confidence during the week, so thats perfect. I`ve had a great week of training up to this tournament, and thats meant something too. I have to be ready from the beginning, she is a hard hitter, so I have to get my legs moving. If im just a fraction late to the shoots its going to be difficult, so I gotta keep moving and running. My goal is to play point for point and do my very best."

Another interview:

"I`ve played really well lately so thats perfect. Its the hard training, the belief in myself and the belief I can do this has taken me this far. I`ve already done well, 4th round here is perfect, so im very happy but of course I will try to go all the way".

I think she has a 50-50 chance, but thats only because of Kutnezo...If her opponent was Sharapova/Lindsay I would say 20-80!!! After the thrashing of Kirilenko, I am not so sure about anything anymore though... :)

Yes, I have ATP MSTV and they show all matches from stadium 1 and stadium 2 (WTA as well). Unfortunately it will be too early for me to be home and watch it (I live in NY area) :(

P.S. If you really want to watch and it's not on TV in your area, you can buy a day pass from them (8$).

I feelt like betting today on the match. I bet on Kuzzi to win 2-0 in sets on betfai*, but I placed a backup bet on 2-1 in sets for Kuzzi, that will give me all my money back. If Caro wins I will lose the money but I will diffinately be celebrating like I won. Bring it on Karolina! :p

Caro lost 2-6 3-6. :(
A bit of a better showing than vs. Sharapova/Davenport, but still not what she is capable of, IMO.

She needs to figure out a plan of how to stay consistent, yet still keep the ball deep, and go for her shots.
But this will come with experience. ;)

Very solid tournament, getting to the R16.

As far as I know, reaching the 4th round at Indian Wells will earn Caroline an extra 40 ranking points (65 new points minus the 25 points for reaching the 2nd round last year). It should move her up a few spots to around her previous best ranking of 43.

Another great tournament Caro :wavey:

If she keeps reaching the fourth rounds or quarter finals she will be in top 20 at the end of the year. :bounce:

The win against Kirilenko 6-2 6-0 was especially impressive.

At least she put up a good fight against Kuznetsova, nearly every time Sveta served it went to deuce or Caro had a break point.
Shame Caroline only went 2/6 on break points while Kuznetsova was 5/8. But I guess Svetas superior experience was a deciding factor.

If Caroline can just slightly improve her serve, she will beat a top player this year, I am sure of it.

Yes a good IW tournament, she won 5 games vs Kuznetsova, but Aga Radwanska who rankt 16th next Monday won 6 games, shows Caro belongs in Top 30.

Here's for a Good Draw in Miami and a 3rd or 4th round win and she's in Top 40!

C. W. Fields

Kuznetsova has beaten Sharapova to reach the finale, so Caroline keeps a steady record so far this year; the player beating her is not only a true top player (Ivanovic, Sharapova, Davenport and Kuznetsova), but that player also goes on to either win the tournament or at least reach the finale.
It's a good sign that Caroline only loses against the very best.
Next step must be to beat the very best! ;)

3R: Srebotnik
4R: Venus, unfortunately

It's indeed a quite good draw, and I don't think facing Venus in 4R is unfortunate. A 4R result will be quite good for her ranking as well as her purse. Furthermore, it's about time Caro has to build up her confidence and game for the top girls. Venus is among the good targets within this group, as, even though she's a superb player, her mind's drifted a little towards fashion design.

Caro can't shy away and only beat those she's supposed to beat and lose to top girls. She's (almost) at a point to take it a further step to challenge the 'better' players. I hope she'll make it. Good luck, Caro.

Good draw for Caroline! Some of my other favorites were much less fortunate...

If she gets to the 4th round I will be satisfied. That would also secure a top 40 ranking. With really good play during the next two months she might even be able to snatch one of the lower seeds for RG. That would simplify her life a lot (right now she is ca 220 points behind #32).

It will be interesting to see how Caroline fares against Pironkova, who has power and gave Henin a lot of trouble in Antwerp (well, for the first set and a half at any rate). I don't think they've ever met before. As for Bartoli, Caro beat her easily in Doha, but it looks like she might be getting out of her slump.

Wozniacki Continues To Shine; Dechy Destroys Nakamura

MIAMI, FL, USA - Day 1 of the Sony Ericsson Open brought plenty of joy for the teenage contingent, with Chan Yung-Jan, Caroline Wozniacki, Marina Erakovic, Vania King and Michelle Larcher de Brito all advancing to the second round. Other players progressing at the $3.77-million, Tier I event were Nathalie Dechy, Ashley Harkleroad and Angelique Kerber.

Denmark's Wozniacki has been one of the early success stories of the 2008 season, reaching quarterfinals at Doha and Memphis, as well as equally impressive fourth round finishes at the Australian Open and Indian Wells. She was made to work hard for victory in Miami though, battling for almost two hours to see off the gifted Tsvetana Pironkova, 64 75.

To Extra Bladet a Danish tabloid she said about her ankle :-
That it was OK when I ran to the sides or back, but it hurt, when I ran forwards, and therefore I could not really pressure her when she played short.

CW before the match.

Good win for Caro, although at this point an expected one (Marion is only 20-21 since her Wimbledon run) :)

P.S. Only 45 points so far not 75 as mentioned above. Now Sunday against Srebotnik - nothing unbeatable about her either.

She got 30 for the 1st.

45 today, and 70 for the 3rd if she wins.

I would think that depending on how everybody else does CW must be close to 40.

I don't think you're supposed to add together the points for all the rounds, only count the points for the round reached. As it says in the rules; "Players are awarded ranking points for the highest round they reach".

Thats right - 30 points for reaching the 2nd round, 45 for third, 70 for 4th and 125 for QF. Caroline is currently 40th (41st if Sugiyama wins today).

Other matches of interest:
Venus Williams will be playing Marina Erakovic today, and Caro will play the winner of that match in the next round if she beats Srebotnik.
Two of the players who have beaten Caro this year, Ivanovic and Davenport, without a doubt two of the best players right now, will face each other today at the Stadium.

I don't think Caroline and Srebotnik have ever met. If I recall correctly, Srebotnik likes to come to the net a lot, so hopefully Caro's passing game will be sharp. This is probably going to be harder than against Bartoli, but I think Caroline can pull this off.

It's a press photo from a charity organisation called Golden Heart. They managed to gain a lot of support from celebrities and private sponsors. The project got a lot of bad publicity in certain papers that claimed that the organisation took a lot of the money for themselves. Not sure what was true and false, but the project seems to be dead :(

So, a hard fought win for Caro, but they count just as much as walkovers. :)
The Venus is next. Caro is admittedly the underdog, but Venus hasn't been all that terrifying this year. In Doha and Memphis she lost to Cibulkova and Kvitova respectively, neither of them top players, so if Caro can just get her own game going and prevent Venus from running her over the way she does with her opponents when she's at her best, then our great Dane has a real chance.

An interview with:
VENUS WILLIAMS

Q. As a friend of Caroline Wozniacki, how do you see her as a person, her potential as a tennis player, and why do you like to play doubles with her?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, I played once with her in Doha, and we had a good tournament. I think she has definitely been improving. I played her a few times, and she's played better every time, and that's what it takes on this tour. So she's got a bright future.
As long as you work hard, you can achieve anything.

Q. Have you seen Caroline play this year? And how far do you think she's come as a 17‑year‑old?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I haven't seen her play too much this year, So I can't quite say. But I'm sure she played well.

Q. She is 19 in the race list right now.
VENUS WILLIAMS: Excellent. Excellent.

It will be #39 because Sugiyama won today, but it doesn't matter so much. The main point is that it is going up. Not so much to defend between now and Roland Garos (only 45 points). Hope she is good on clay too...

And of course may be a miracle happens and she beats Venus tomorrow...

 I don't think she has to do that much. Like other people said Venus has been underwhelming this year. Even at AO she made the QF but she really didn't play well in any of her matches after the 1st set of the 1st rd. lol. Anyhoodle I like Caro so if anyone's going to "upset" Venus I would rather it be Caro. Caroline just has to be consistent and use her great defense to make Venus hit a couple more balls. She just has to capitalize on the UE she will def get from Venus.

She's never beaten Venus before, and has not done particularly well against the best power hitters so far, but Venus's level of play has been very inconsistent and I really hope she can score her first win against her tomorrow, preferably in front of a packed crowd. :)

Guys today came the first mayor strike on Caro from a danish tabliod newspaper. Im so in shock about the frontpage of this paper, a big 90 X 90 CM poster with a picture of Caroline with a clear cameltoe, its x-rated, its fully in view you cant miss it. This poster hangs in every newsstands in whole of Denmark. Its everywhere. The text to the pic has a double meaning in danish, either im fired up to play Venus OR im so turned on by Venus in a sexual way. I must say I dont know what will happen when Caro wakes up later this Miami morning and learns about this. This is absolutely unacceptable and im furious about this. I hope she can use this for the match today but im unsure how she will react, her dad should absolutely ban this newspaper, how dare they put up this picture before one of her greatest matches, after this whole year shes had. They have absolutely no morale, no its not normal we have "naked" celebs here on the frontpage, I cant remember when it ever happend before.

You can see the frontpage here, the 90X90 cm poster is many times lager and fills a whole page.

Carofan, I doubt Caroline spends her morning hours reading Ekstrabladet and I don't think her father is going to bring it to her attention, either, so she probably won't hear of it before today's match. And if the Wozniackis are going to do anything about it, I think they'll wait until after the tournament so not to distract Caroline during the tournament.

I don't think it's worth the trouble, though. That kind of double meaning innuendo is quite normal for tabloids. They can cover themselves by saying it was just meant to be a little funny and obviously everybody knows what the real meaning is. It's only if it turns out that the picture has been 'shined up' to make it more 'sexy'(/distasteful), then the two things combined may give them a case.

If I was in their shoes I think I would either ignore it or urge all supporters of Caroline never to buy an Ekstrabladet newspaper in the future.

Extra Bladet just dose not care, they never do, whatever sells the paper.

Some girls ( sport, tennis or otherwise ) exploite the glamour thing and should maybe expect to be exploited, but I remember an interview on Danish TV where the interviewer asked CW what she thought about being in DK a bit of a sex symbol ( or sometyhing like that ).
CW, who usually has an answer for everything, and is very confident about talking about her own talent, stuttered, obviously did not know what to say, and looked highly embarrassed.
She is good looking for a 17 year old, dose not flaunt it about, and the media should respect that. She concentrates on her tennis, and so should they.

I am not a prude, I like looking at girls unclad and otherwise.
Everything to its time and place.

3-6 , 3-6 :banghead:
Caro broke Venus three times but was broken six times herself.

her serve is too unstable when put under pressure by the top girls

:sad::hug:
she'll get better. Her game is good but she needs to add a little more pace on her serve and groundies to beat the top players when they're playing well.

If I was in their shoes I think I would either ignore it or urge all supporters of Caroline never to buy an Ekstrabladet newspaper in the future.

are they trying to imply that Venus and Caro have some sort of unprofessional relationship :tape:

As far as I know Venus is still w/ Hank Kuhne and Caro...is Caro dating anyone???

Venus had a good day with as many winners as errors, and Caro kept the errors down. She lacks in general 10-15% in ralley pace and power compared to Venus today according to the second set we saw on Eurosport.

I must say Caro is using her currant strenghts to the max at the moment with all the wins this year, eventhough she lacks those 10-15% she manage to beat everyone else, how about that :yeah: When she can match the superstars the real fun begins.
