Hamilton (Kirikiriroa in Māori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C4%81ori_language)) is New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand)'s seventh largest city, and the centre of the country's fourth largest urban area. It is in the Waikato (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato) region of the North Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Island), approximately 130 km south of Auckland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland%2C_New_Zealand). It sits at a major road and rail nexus in the centre of the Waikato basin, on both banks of the Waikato River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato_River).
The area now covered by the city was originally the site of a handful of Māori villages, including Kirikiriroa, from which the city takes its Māori name. By the time British settlers arrived, most of these villages, which sat beside the Waikato River, were abandoned. The new British settlement was renamed Hamilton after Captain John Charles Fane Hamilton[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton,_New_Zealand#_note-0), the popular Scottish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland) commander of HMS Esk (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=HMS_Esk&action=edit), who was killed in the battle of Gate Pa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gate_Pa), Tauranga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tauranga%2C_New_Zealand). The city is near the southernmost navigable reach of the Waikato River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato_River), amidst New Zealand's richest and most fertile agricultural land. Initially an agricultural service centre, it now has a growing and diverse economy

Briar Preston has drawn Olivia Rich in the first round

Briar will start as the underdog, but she has ALOT of talent and she could well win this match. For any of you who havent seen her play she's pretty tall, has a very good backhand and goes for the winners.

I predicted an all kiwi final last week....and was proved completely and utterly wrong (not even a quarterfinalist!!!)

Guess I was just speaking a week ahead of myself :p

They retired, I think Eden went to work in a shop Papakura not sure about Paula though. I don't mean to sound like a cow here, but I don't think they ever had much long term potential (even the media portrayed them that way). Kai Vano used to be close friends with them (no idea if she still is, haven't asked).

She's been playing so well lately :) Good performances in the 25K's in Australia and now a this! All the best in the final Anna :worship:

Does anyone have a pic of her they could post? I haven't got the slightest clue as to what she looks like...bet she's hot though :P

Also, will she validate a WTA ranking now? If yes, if someone is really bored could they add up all her points and tell me how many points she's got and where she'd be ranked?

God I'm a demanding bastard arent I?

Barry Wins ASB Pro Circuit Title In Hamilton

9/03/2008 5:02:53 p.m.
Barry (pictured below) the tournament third seed can expect her current WTA professional ranking of 419 to move to around the mid 380’s after her three set triumph over Australian qualifier Anna Wishink.
http://www.tennisnz.com/Resource.aspx?ID=1790

Barry who hails from Canterbury beat Wishink 6-7(1) 6-1 6-4, but won’t have any time to dwell on her success as she catches the ‘red-eye’ flight to Perth for two US$25,000 Challenger tournaments.

The match took a shade over two hours and earned Barry, 19 around US$1500, but it’s the ranking points which are of more value and will help her gain direct acceptance into stronger tournaments.

“In the first set I was waiting a little bit. I felt like I was trying to do too much with the ball. I was a little flat footed at first but in the second set I started going for my shots. In the third I tightened up again but got an early break and managed to come through from there,” said Barry who proved she has a forehand which can now win her free points in matches.

“I hope to continue doing well now in US$25,000 and 50,000 events. I hope it’s going to be a good year for me now,” she said.

For Wishink (pictured below) just making the final was a reward after she lost in qualifying last week in Wellington and managed to fight her way through qualifying in Hamilton including a big three set victory over Kiwi Kairangi Vano in Saturday’s semis.

The US$15,000 men’s title was won by Australian 18-year-old Brydan Klein (pictured below) who is on his way up the international rankings having won the Australian juniors title last year and is already inside the top-500. His 6-4 6-4 victory over Korean qualifier Young-Jun Kim should see him move to close to breaking the top-400. Hamilton was his third Futures title with no doubt many more to come.
