Ana! :worship: Bagel  Nicole was very generous with the errors, but Ana played a fantastic match (from what I could see with the crap livestream), 7 aces. Looks like she is over the injury. Hopefully she can get her first win over Demented now.

You'd think Ana wouldn't even be playing with her 'injury' last week. I'm surprised she even took to the court. Obviously it wasn't as serious at it was made out.She said in the on-court-interview, that her ankle is not fully recovered yet, but it's getting better. She wore some braces for her ankle... just like during RG.

I'm still not sure is this good deccission from Ana to play this match only 7 days after that injury in Doha. She is obviously ready today - but why risk this injury again and make they worse? If she have even litle pain in her ankle right now i suggest her to withdraw tommorow and prepare herself for IW (she will be #1 seed probably).

BTW... what is wrong with WTAworld since this season started about Ana Ivanovic??? She lose only two matches this season (against Justine and Maria) and reach GS final, and if we count FED CUP matches her w/l 2008 record so far is fantastic 16/2 - but people here underrate Ana more and more... She lose easly here WWW poll (Nicole beat her easly 60/40 in percentages) and at vBet here despite odds on Ana is very good (1.65), about 45 members stake on Nicole about 75.000 and about 15 members bet on Ana about 1.500 (about 700 is my )?!? I dont see any rational reasons and logic for this WTAworld negative phenom about Ana. That remind me at start of last season when about #15 ranked Ana won mostly polls about "WTA most OVERRATED player", but only three months later "overrated Ana which not deserve #15" finished like TOP5 player.

I don't know that I would clasify myself as a pundit but I sure as hell don't disagree with you when you describe Nicole as a no hoper. While one can't rule out the possibility of Nicole making a substantial improvement to her game at some point, she certainly she still has time on her side, I certainly haven't seen anything in the last year that makes me think she is likely to make any imminent improvement in her game or her ranking.

as usual i agree with you, she good to a point but there are 12-15 players that are better, and most are still improving where as nicole seems to be going backwards.
though like you i cant rule out her getting her act together and improving in the next year or 2.

Running with what you and Corswandt are saying, I agree too. It's kind of weird -- Nicole seems like she has a lot of personality, but her game has no dimensions which might reflect that.

I'm not a big Maria fan (the shrieking and the money- and Putin- love are offputting to me, though I like her humor and self-effacing qualities). But Sharapova has obviously added some embellishments and tactics to her game in the last 6-9 months, and she was already more nuanced than Nicole. Meanwhile Nicole is playing exactly like she did the last few years, but worse.

Some truly lousy results from the Czech players excepting Kvitova lately. If Vaidisova and Lucie don't watch it, they're going to be eclipsed quicker than they might expect.

So, who has more or less hope to change and improve? Nicole, Lucie both, or...neither? I'm hoping Lucie, but she's not giving me much reason to hope.

I've actually seen Nicole tone things down a bit and play a more accurate game...usually against lesser opponents where she's not threatened. Lucie seems hopeless...it's like she just doesn't get it. That would be a shame if she never does, because she's got such a game on her.

Please do name all 12.

She's ranked 14th. It doesn't take much imagination to figure out who is better than she is.

And while I think you can definitely make a case that a few of those ranked above her aren't as good, keep your eyes open, because as Nicole has regressed, about 10 other young players have progressed.

I watched the match last night and I wasn't impressed with Nicole.

There's a discusion on www.tenniswarehouse.com about modern Tennis and the lack of serve and volleyers - it was a comment Pete Sampras made ealier this month. In that debate someone posted a comment that Mats Wilander made last year. This is the quote "Where they're different to us is that they they're physically stronger and they have more power in their rackets so they don't need to think as much as we had to. That means they have less chance of changing their game if they're playing badly. You see, the thing for us was that it was never about playing well, it was about playing smart"

Whenever I see Nicole Vaidisova play, I never see her play smart, she is always trying to hit the ball as hard as possible, she never tries to vary her tactics - I'm not impressed with her. She's still young and has time to become more of a thinker on a Tennis Court, if she actually thinks about it.

Nicole should study players like Henin, Djokovic, Federer and Mauresmo (putting aside her lack of confidence at the moment) they play smart with today's technology.

She's ranked 14th. It doesn't take much imagination to figure out who is better than she is.

And while I think you can definitely make a case that a few of those ranked above her aren't as good, keep your eyes open, because as Nicole has regressed, about 10 other young players have progressed.
it doesn't matter untill they start beating Nicole

and about your first point. she has a better record against Jankovic and Hantuchova. so i'm sure Nicole is better than them and will definitely crush them again and again.

It equally doesn't matter unless Nicole continues to beat them. And since they haven't played lately, and they are going up the rankings at about the rate Nicole is sliding down, I'd be worried.

Since the 2006 US Open (where Jankovic became a top player), they have gone 3-3. On top of that, since then, Jankovic has cracked the top 5, been a 2x slam semifinalist, and won multiple Tier I and other titles. Vaidisova has...done something, I'm sure, I just can't think of it off the top of my head. Won a meaningful title? No, that's not it. Been in the top 5? Nope, not that either. Had better slam results? No? Darn, what HAS she done? You'll have to tell me. Jankovic definitely counts as one of the players who is better than Vaidisova at the moment.

As for Hantuchova, she has (since IW 2007, the start of her return to grace) moved up to Vaidisova's career high, won a Tier I and a Tier II title, reached a slam semifinal, and NOT choked in about five matches where she could have, which isn't normally significant, but when talking about Vaidisova being better than someone, a reference to choking ability needs to be made since, let's face it, she's kind of taking the prize of the new generation when it comes to choking.

So maybe throw in a couple more names that aren't better than Vaidisova, and remember: beating someone isn't 100% relevant here. Jill Craybas beat Serena. Kvitova just beat Venus. Insignificant, really. Sustaining a ranking and a quality of play for 12 months? Very siginificant, and very relevant. That's something 13 players have done better than Vaidisova. And yes, she's been injured, but let's talk in a couple months when her French and Wimbledon points fall off and see where she is then. If she's risen in the ranks, the injury argument is valid. If not, well...you get the point.

And I like Vaidisova, I just tire of her inability to progress and the inability of her fans to recognize this.
