Hamilton (Kirikiriroa in Māori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C4%81ori_language)) is New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand)'s seventh largest city, and the centre of the country's fourth largest urban area. It is in the Waikato (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato) region of the North Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Island), approximately 130 km south of Auckland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland%2C_New_Zealand). It sits at a major road and rail nexus in the centre of the Waikato basin, on both banks of the Waikato River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato_River).
The area now covered by the city was originally the site of a handful of Māori villages, including Kirikiriroa, from which the city takes its Māori name. By the time British settlers arrived, most of these villages, which sat beside the Waikato River, were abandoned. The new British settlement was renamed Hamilton after Captain John Charles Fane Hamilton[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton,_New_Zealand#_note-0), the popular Scottish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland) commander of HMS Esk (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=HMS_Esk&action=edit), who was killed in the battle of Gate Pa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gate_Pa), Tauranga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tauranga%2C_New_Zealand). The city is near the southernmost navigable reach of the Waikato River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato_River), amidst New Zealand's richest and most fertile agricultural land. Initially an agricultural service centre, it now has a growing and diverse economy
