These two months need to be a wake up call for the Williams Sisters.

I'm not a fan of them, but I've always respect them for being two amazing athletes and for everything they have conquered in the tour. But it's not their name that will give them wins. It's hard working and fighting spirit. The tour is more competitive now and if they aren't focused and they are more interesting in clothing brands and dental surgeries than it's obvious that players that work and play almost every week will kick their asses! Is it that hard for them to understand or they've understood and they can't care less?

of course its a big deal for Kvitova but I'm saying its not a good way to gauge how well this chick is going to do in the future, See: Pironkova, Raymond, etc.

And I've seen Venus play bad...when she plays bad a lot of girls in the top 100 can beat her.

Venus you fucking fucker. How dare you. You had this title in the bag. You could have should have beat her. It was guranteed that you would have met someone outside the top 100 in the QF's. How could you just fuck that match up. You need to get your head together, and do it ASAP. I don't know why the hell your in the top 10 if your losing to people like that. This worse than Serena's loss to Jankovic. Not even quality players are beating, and you don't give a rat's ass about it. Get your head together, I mean it. Take some notes from Serena. Go to Beolletteri and let him work on that serve, and groundies because obviously Oracene and Richard aren't doing it.

Well, what can I say? Women tennis = anything can happen with top stars, too. Not many players are unbeatable. Sure, some players don't lose against number 100-200 or don't have a big fight with these players but you see. There are some players with an higher ranking who have problems.
I'm not really surprised that this sometimes happen. Sure, now! Because I think "oh, Venus, you will win this in two sets" but it isn't normal in this tennis time.

You need to calm down. This loss and the easy loss to Cibulkova puts her in the same category as Amelie. Another bad loss at Bangalore...which would be a loss to anyone other than Serena and Jankovic and she'll offically be in a massive slump. Even In 2007 Maria didn't lose in the 1st RD of Tier III's to players ranked outside the top 100.

Well done Petra. :yeah: Huge win for her, even if Venus isn't playing like an all-time great, she is still a legend and it takes alot to close out a match like that. Very impressive fightback aswell.

Venus needs to seriously regroup and work on some things because she's not producing top 10 tennis right now. I think she should take the next 3 weeks off and get into perfect gear for Miami.

She plays like a slower, harder hitting Safarova, if that helps. I know she took it to Venus, because she doesn't have the speed or the spin to keep the ball in the court for long enough. She goes for big shots and tends to make them. Right now she is 17 and fearless, so I really look forward to seeing what she does with this result.

Mary wasn't in the top 10 when she lost to players outside the top 100. Anyway I don't see what the big deal is. Everybody loses. Venus isn't gonna hold back even if she is 50 up or 05 down. So you should expect loses. She will bounce back. We all know what level she can get too.

I am a Venus fan but it is clear to me Venus needs a LIGHTER SCHEDULE to play well she simply doesn't play well playing BACK TO BACK EVENTS. Venus has NO BUSINESS playing middle east event last week and now Memphis. I think Venus should of skipped the that for Memphis. I also believe Venus better PULL OUT of event in India ASAP. It is clear and obvious to me Venus plays her best with a LIMITED SCHEDULE.

Nonsense, nonsense, NONSENSE (or, since this is coming from you, "business as usual"). If Venus' schedule were any more limited, she'd be Monica Seles. Regardless of when she plays, she needs to play better. Period.

Originally, I was thinking that this her schedule was bad because she would get burned out since she would make it somewhat deep into these draws.

Even though, she has enough time to rest up...i don't think it would be a good idea to play Bangalore and face the possibility of another embarrassing loss. She needs to work on coming back strong for Miami.

The loss to Cibulkova was understandable, but i don't understand this loss at all.

Morrissey
Feb 27th, 2008, 04:41 AM
Look at Sharapova she won last week but she decided NOT to play this week. Sure Sharapova's excuse is she's not 110%. However, Sharapova is on a high I bet her next event won't be until Miami. It's all about peaking at the right times. I do think its strange that Venus is playing so much early in the year it just doesn't suit her. Venus always plays better on her usual limited schedule.

Every player faces that possibility whenever they take the court, my friend. Venus is losing because she's not playing well, not because she's playing too much.

All i'm saying is when a player is most confident and at their peak, rarely do you see them get upset like this. Obviously, Venus isn't full of confidence after her mediocre start to the year.

Venus played four matches last week (two singles, two doubles). She played ONE match this week. If that's "too much tennis," then she needs to find another line of work.

Again, are you stupid? Do you have reading comprehension problems? Tennis is more then just playing matches. The preparation for events takes a lot of work. I was just referring to not playing Bangalore. She needs a couple weeks off to practice and reevaluate her game instead of jumping right into a new tournament next week. Besides Miami is coming up and then Amelia Island right after. Minus Bangalore, i'm sure she'll have plenty of opportunities coming up to try to regain her confidence.

The word "athlete" should help you understand the situation  If she had gotten to the final of Doha, then maybe I'd understand what you are saying, but she played 2 or 3 matches in Doha, so your post is very lame and you are trying to come up with excuses.

Other tennis players do it, so why can't Venus?

I think Venus is in quite a predicament. She really needs to play and train more to stop these embarrassing (well, embarrassing to her and her fans)losses, but if she does that she's probably going to get injured again and have to take a chunk of time out anyway.

Objectively, I do think it's time for her to retire because that is her reality right now. Unless, of course she's able to pull of another surprise slam run in the near future. It always unwise to count her out in slams but if she plays like she did today it won't happen, obviously.

Petra Kvitova has been zooming up the rankings. She was outside of the top 400 a year ago. She is clearly an indoor specialist and plays the vast majority of her tennis indoors. Her record indoors is actually pretty awesome. For her career she is 42-7 indoors. Sure most of those wins were on ITF level but she has already beaten several top 100 players indoors as well such as Medina Garrigues, Pironkova and Parmentier. She played well against Dementieva losing 76 62 earlier this month.

Obviously beating Venus is much bigger than anything she has done before but the signs were there. There are a lot of young girls breaking through right now and this is another one. There is not a lot of room in the top 40 but someone I think room is going to have to be made for this girl by the end of the year.

For Venus it was a tough loss, but the combination of bad scheduling and a dangerous, albeit practically unknown opponent will cause that. Venus has had a great career but she is flesh and blood. Having suffered from anemia and also being quite fragile physically, she is most certainly not immune to the affects of aging either. One simply can't expect her to perform consistantly at the level she did at 21 now that she is 27. Venus had a great year in 2007 that deserves praise and respect but repeating it in 2008 will be even harder. But I'm sure she will give it her best effort as I am sure she has given her best effort the last two weeks.

She lost Antwerp final in 05, then lost in her fisrt match in Dubai (Farina Elia). I think that is correct.

Anyway, no us dwelling on this loss, its just another tournament, she'll pick up her game when it counts.

Yeah, but almost every year is a period like that.

In 2007 she also had the horrible match against Rezai, then early loss RG. Or R3. Also Miami/Amelia Island was a bad thing, despite winning few matches more. The matches against Sharapova and Golovin were just horrible.

Wow, how ironic. :) That's how I feel when Justine loses Wimbledon every year. At least we have that in common Matt. :wavey:

Is this the worst loss of her career?
Yes.

Kvitova, a qualifier, has a lifetime (2-2) record on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, with the second win of her career coming against Venus Williams.

Doesn't get much worse than that for Venus. Great way for a 17 year old to start her career.

Wow. Kvitova is a talented young player. Congrats for this great win Petra. :)

Venus. :help: I haven't seen Venus to play good (good=capable of beating the best players) since last USO, so I kind of expected this coming. And the worst thing is that I think this loss is a sign. I know she's a going-down-bouncing-back type of player but there is always a last bounce back in a player's career. I have the feeling there won't be another rise... But I wish her the best to disprove my feelings.

What a crazy result. Davenport better not lose the tournament now. If she doesn't win, who will Memphis go to?
