In 1998 WTA first introduced the "Best 18" ("Best 17" since 2001) ranking system.

Below is the list of players who broke into Top-10 since 1998 and breakdown of their 52 weeks results at the moment of entering Top-10.

Thanks for the data, but where do you find all these old rankings? WTA site (unlike ATP) is very poor on statistics...

Serena only needed 12 tournaments! :eek:

She also beat 9 of the top 10 players. :bowdown:

It only took Venus 16 events, impressive as well. :yeah:

Impressive indeed for serena!:worship: And I think at least 5 of them were slam winners at the time!! :eek: Thanks for those stats as always. I wonder how many of them entered the top 10 as teenagers. Vee was 18 and serena 17.

Only Serena and Kournikova broke into Top-10 by playing only Tier II and above tournaments over 52 weeks counted towards their first Top-10 ranking.
Only Sharapova broke into Top-10 by winning a GS title.
Only Schett and Dementieva broke into Top-10 without reaching a single Tour final over 52 weeks counted towards their Top-10 ranking (though Dementieva reached Olympics final).

February '01 was when Elena made the top ten for the first time? Weird...I thought it had been earlier...

But didn't she make her first tour final in February or March of '01? So her top ten ranking wasn't entirely off/almost coincided with her first tour final; she did well at TI events and a grand slam for awhile.

At her first tournament as a top-tenner Lena made it to the final at Acapulco but lost to Amanda Coetzer.

No, she didn't.
Marion didn't win Auckland in 2007 (Jankovic did) and her only Top-10 wins between US Open-2006 and New Haven-2007 were Schnyder at Bali and Jankovic and Henin at Wimbledon.

This thread so badly needs an update. Preferably by its creator, but there are better chances Errani completes a career slam :sobbing:

Well let's think, who's been top ten since then. I'd have no idea how to find out when they first got top ten and what their records were, but I can think of:

Azarenka, Kvitova, Radwanska, Wozniacki, Schiavone, Pennetta, Errani, Li, Stosur, Petkovic... Think that's everyone isn't it? That doesn't seem like many.

You forgot Kerber.

Finding out when they got there is easy, WTA info has that. With it you could also get all other info, though doing it manually is a pain.
I'll just do the slams for the time being.

Radwanska: 7 July 2008 (after Wimbledon; rose from No.11 to No.10; first Polish player ever in Top 10) {Grand Slams: 4R QF 4R QF}

Azarenka: 23 March 2009 (after Indian Wells; rose from No.11 to No.10) {Grand Slams: 4R 3R 3R 4R}

Wozniacki: 18 May 2009 (after Madrid; rose from No.11 to No.10) {Grand Slams: 3R 3R 4R 3R}

Pennetta: 17 August 2009 (after Cincinnati SF; rose from No.12 to No.10; first Italian ever in Top 10) {Grand Slams: QF 3R 1R 3R}

Li: 1 February 2010 (after Australian Open; rose from No.17 to No.10; first Chinese in Top 10) {Grand Slams: 4R 3R QF SF}

Stosur: 22 March 2010 (after Indian Wells; rose from No.11 to No.10) {Grand Slams: SF 3R 2R 4R}

Schiavone: 7 June 2010 (after winning French Open; surged from No.17 to No.6; first Italian ever to reach a Grand Slam final or win one, second Italian in Top 10) {Grand Slams: QF 4R 4R WON}

Kvitova: 9 May 2011 (after Madrid; rose from No.18 to No.10) {Grand Slams: 1R SF 3R QF}

Petkovic: 8 August 2011 (after Carlsbad; rose from No.11 to No.10) {Grand Slams: 4R QF QF 3R}

Kerber: 21 May 2012 (after Rome SF; rose from No.11 to No.10) {Grand Slams: 1R 1R SF 3R}

Errani: 11 June 2012 (after French Open; rose from No.24 to No.10; also Top 20 debut, previous career-high No.23) {Grand Slams: 2R 1R QF RU}

Sharapova and Schiavone are the only one since 1998 to break into the Top 10 by winning a slam, or even by having one in their points at that time.
