Tough loss for Caroline...

Still a lot to improve in her game, but a good week overall. Now on to Memphis - #7 seed and no Maria around ;)

Congrats to Maria. It's difficult to see her being beaten this week...

Caroline was pathetic in this match.

Sharapova gave her chances in the deuces but she couldn't take them.

Also, the speed of Maria and the way she strikes the balls are way better than Caroline.

It seems that Maria strikes the fastest on the Doha surface even under strong winds.

Caroline's game was a disaster today ... Tried to play hyper aggressive whereas she doesn't have the capacity. I'm quite disappointed with her, contrary to Aga, it seems like she doesn't have any game plan. She can be a bit like Cibulkova at times, but she doesn't have her patience. Lots of things to work on ahead of her.
Still a good tournament .

Don't exaggerate. Her performance today was very poor, but ususally she does have a game plan. And to be honest no one has had any working game plan against Maria recently...

Aga is more than a year older - big difference at this point. But lot of things to work on for sure... Let's see how she does in Memphis.

Wozzy's strokes still need to be more compact and solid...
She still has a long way to go before she can execute her aggressive ground game effectively (since her movement is not that great)

Maria was just Maria, the matured version of that type of game...

Thank you for bringing up this thread. It really puts in perspective how far Caro has come in those 3 years since she was 17 and still outside top 50. :)
Funny how her W/UE isn't all that different today from what it was back then (4 winners more and 6 errors less) but still the matches are almost complete opposites.
Another funny thing; this tournament was her first meeting with both Sharapova and Bartoli, her current SF/F opponents. Bartoli was ranked 9 at the time (she still had the points for her 2007 Wimbledon run) and I think she was Caro's first top 10 scalp.

And it was just around that time I joined this forum. Oh, happy memories! :)

Edit: I also think this was the last time Maria won a tournament worth more than $2.000.000

I’m not sure what the purpose of re-opening this thread was. I do recall that when Steffi Graf first started to play on the tour she was routinely beaten by Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. She was I believe 0-6 against Chris Evert before she finally beat Chris- the final head to head was 8-6 in favor of Graf; i.e. Chris never beat Steffi again once she lost for the first time. Similarly I believe Steffi started off 0-8 against Martina before ending lifetime h2h at 9-9. Of course Steffi is 13 to 15 years younger than Martina and Chris which goes a long way to explain the pattern of those h2h results.

So we have today the Maria-Caro h2h which stands at 2-2 but Caro’s victories were the last two times they have met. There is only a little more than three years age difference between Caro and Maria. Still how certain are you that Maria will ever beat Caro again?

angliru
Mar 20th, 2011, 08:07 AM
Yeah, bumping this thread is :help:

As someone said, Caroline was ranked in the 50s back then (Doha 2008), while Sharapova was #5. Sharapova had won AO a month before and was in great form (and she also won this particular tournament at Doha). Wozniacki, on the other hand, had never won any WTA tournaments at all. She had not even been in a final. She wasn't the player she is today, and she got a beatdown. Hardly surprising. Sharapova, by the way (to add to the excellent remarks by tkutsaar above), was 0-8 against top 10 players early in her career, and she never won against a top 10 player before she cracked the top 20 herself! Henin was 0-10 against top 10s before she got her first win at a time when she was a top 20-player herself.

Caro has become much better since then. She has 19 WTA finals since 2009; no other WTA player has more than 9 finals in the same timespan. And Wozniacki has 9 finals the last 8 months - including 5 Tier I's and a Tour Championship final. And two grand slam SF's. And winning 6 of those finals (plus one more chance today)! It's actually not bad, although the GS titles are still missing :)

Pova's two wins over Woz don't really count anymore - they are just too long ago when Woz was just even more of a kid.

What do count are Woz's two recent wins over Pova. The official h2h is 2-2 but the realistic h2h is 2-0 for Woz. What will be interesting in the future is to see if Pova can continue reassembling her game and be able to take it to Woz.

In 2006, before Pova's "troubles", Hingis won the first match but lost the next two. So Pova has been in this situation before and will eventually work it out, even though her circumstances are much different today.

There is a difference though: the first time they played, Maria had no idea what to do against Martina. After that she worked it out and never lost to her again. Now, however, Maria knows what she has to do against Caroline, but she can't execute.

sadly i think that oh so brief spell at the start of 2008 until she got the rc tear vs a bondarenko at iw may well prove to be pova's career peak. i really really hope not, and that somehow she can get back to that level.

though i suppose we should be thankful she is still playing at all - rc tears have ended careers. plus i think if you'd offered her an iw sf spot pre-tournament she would've gladly accepted that given her form so far this year.

Let's also pretend Sharapova's Wimbledon triumph doesn't exist. She was only a kid then and we all know Serena is the best ever

If Maria did not have the shoulder injury, she might have done more great things.
But right now, Caroline is the better player, and the improving player.
Maria has to get some consistency in her game.
She was falling apart against Peng, and got steamrolled by Caroline.
And including that [^]this was still a good week for post surgery Maria.

Um yeah, it doesn't work like that, sorry. So if Wozniacki won one of those first two encounters, would that one have counted? But because she lost, it didn't? :spit:

Caroline back then looked like a fragile little thing. I remember her match against Ana Ivanovic at the AO and everyone felt sorry for the little girl out of her depth. But how she grew leaps and bounds in months!!!?! Within a year or so she was bagelling her way through the early rounds of slams (e.g. FO 2009) Caroline is a genuine tennis star that cant be argued against.

But the inconsistencies and problems with the elite players have been astonishing. Like an epidemic during that time. Henin, Mauresmo, Williams, Sharapova followed by Jankovic, Ivanovic, Kuznetsova - most of them have fallen like flies or oscillating in form. Caroline is doing a good job of holding the tour to a decent standard, but it's a bit tragic that she should find herself in this position. She is a sort of one woman show holding forte on her own because everyone else is a mess. It beggars belief at how this happened in a year or two. But thankfully I think things are getting better and will be better by years end.

Yes. The people criticizing Caro should try to imagine what the top would look like right now without her. With Kim not playing a full schedule - because of family and injuries - Vera, who's currently holding one title, would be the closest thing the tour had to a consistent top player with a full schedule! Nothing against Vera but I don't see how that's much better than what we have.

2008 was the best year, Ana winning a slam, number 1, Serena and Venus winning, Maria too..... I want those days back, nowadays is just unbearable to see players like Fiona winning back-to-back slams... :sobbing:

Are you kidding? While Wozniacki has transgressed greatly, Maria has regressed greatly as well. There is no "realistic" H2H, there is only H2H. Of course, right now, Wozniacki will defeat Sharapova 9/10 times. But do you honestly think that Wozniacki would have been able to defeat the Maria that played in early 08? She would obviously take more games and maybe a set but do you really?

If we go by your logic, the H2H should be 0-0. Since Maria won all her matches when Wozniacki sucked and Wozniacki won all her matches when Maria sucked.

Caroline back then looked like a fragile little thing. .

Indeed she was. But what you have to appreciate is that Team Wozniacki had the patience to wait for Caroline's young body to be fully developed, before they changed her fitness training to more 'bulking up'; i.e power.

Caroline is now a very fit and healthy 20 yr old. Excellent tennis career management from her team. We now have the AER, which will hopefully prevent trainers/parents whatever to play Russian roulette with young and physically not fully developed girls, because they don't have the patience to wait for the money and the glory.

This one must be the lamest comment ever.

Though Maria had some good wins (but no prestige wins at all) and reached the semis, she's in a slump - and there's no doubt in this.Wozniacki is at her best and wins the match.I don't see the problem - and really don't see the point of not counting matches for h2h. :haha:

what kind of strange logic ist that? you could just as easily say that sharapova's two losses don't count, because she over-the-hill.

The last 2 times they faced shows how far they've each gone in opposite directions. Caro is now 1 of the 2 best players on the tour and Maria has not beaten a seed in the last 7 majors, and is only holding 2 Intl titles, while Caro won the last 5 Premier Mandatory/Premier 5 events

Why this thread keeps coming up? Is it supposed to make Maria fans feel good or bad? Maria use to be much better player than Caro, granted Caro's age played huge part in it. It is the opposite right now and Maria's recovery plays big part in it. Saying "recovery" is over-simplification, after the surgery Masha's body has changed. Her arm works differently and I am sure so did her weight. Masha is not overweight, but if you look at her lanky figure in her teens and now you can suspect that if her movement was her weakness in the past it will be more difficult to deal with right now. One thing has not changed. Maria continues to be a fighter and she has a big chance to find herself again eventually. It will be probably still a different Maria, but maybe as good or better. When that happens and Caro continues to develop as she has been then the outcome of their future meeting is a pure gamble. The only thing I could say is I want to see it ;)... as for now we know the situation, but there is no reason to live in the past.
