I think she has to make the final.

If JJ wins today, she will have 3750 points, which puts her 25 points ahead of Kuznetsova and 67 points behind Ivanovic. If she makes the final, she will have 3855 points, compared to Ivanovic's 3817. So she has to make the final. If she wins the event, she will have 3985 points, a total 168 points ahead of Ivanovic and 2545 points behind Henin  :help:

No, I actually think that Jankovic is really undeserving... no slam final, she shouldnt be ranked that high.

what about Mauresmo, she was #1 in around 2004? around that time with no slam final.

i don't like this kind of discussion.if she is where she is it means she deserves it.everybody has a lot of things to say about kim clijsters being number one without winning a slam.but we know how she deserved it and finally she won it.

But no slam final was on her rankings the year when she reached #1.

Frankly, until Maria gets there, any current #2 is undeserving.

Venus, Serena, & Davenport at #2 now you mean? Venus is the only one with a true claim...Serena has nothing past a slam QF and one super Tier 1 on her ranking, Davenport is nowhere past Tier III land. Venus really only has Wimbledon and the USO semi, but that's a lot to have, so she'd be fairly deserving, but I still think Maria is the true #2.

She has no Slam final yet because she was in toughest half of the draw both at RG 2007 and at AO 2008 otherwise, she would have reached the final at both events IMO.

If you look at her results since Rome 2006, she has been the most consistent player on the tour behind Justine so, if she'll become #2 soon, it will be something that she has totally deserved.

I recognize that the real #2 at the moment is Sharapova though.

"If" and "would" don't count towards the rankings and don't earn wins/titles.

Wow. She lost badly.

And for the record, Ivanovic has somewhat earned the #2 spot. Tier I title + 2 slam finals.

It is the same history of Tommy Haas , people donīt think he deserved the number 2 due to the lack of a GS Final . Mauresmo got it at some point , no matter it was 5 years before of her highest rank

True, but we're not talking about lifetime achievement awards here, we're talking about is the player fairly ranked. I'm not even saying MoMo wasn't fairly ranked...non-Slam tournaments count the way they count for a reason. But while a slam final 5 years prior to the current ranking may reflect on the player's overall ability, it does not reflect on their ranking for the past 52 weeks.
