MARIA :worship::worship::worship::worship::worship:
Vosko was playing really really good today, if she continues like this in the next tournaments she'll climb all the way up thro the official rankings!  She kinda had troubles finishing the second set tho.

Anyways, Masha was back and on fire in the third set! :bounce: :D:D

The wind was so tough, and so was her opponent.

That really wasn’t the first match you want, but she stepped it up in the third.

Overall I think Maria played very well, maybe a little to defensive in the second but you can also blame the wind for that, and of course her opponent, it’s very typical that Maria brings out the best tennis in someone.

Well done Maria!

galina. :worship: so proud of you. best tournament in a long, long time. hopefully this is the push needed to work back into the top 100.
as for maria, this is not the kind of result you'd expect from her. i'm sure the wind was a big factor and maria got through it in the end. good clutch stuff and she moves on. :yeah:

Awesome match from both players in first and second set. SP in 2nd set from Voskoboeva was unbelievable. :worship:

It was an difficult first round for Sharapova because of these conditions with the weather, rebound ace (1st round is always a little problem) and Voskoboeva, who played her best match of career.

Great performance! :bounce:

MARIA OPENS UP DOHA CAMPAIGN WITH A WIN

In very windy conditions, Maria advanced to the 3rd round at the Qatar Total Open in Doha after she defeated Galina Voskoboeva of Russia 6-4 4-6 6-1 in 2 hours and 5 minutes.

The 1st set took 44 minutes as Maria won it 6-4. In the middle of the set both players traded breaks and Maria got the crucial break to lead 5-4 and took the set on her serve.

Maria lost her 1st set of the year in the 2nd set as Voskoboeva took it 6-4.

In the 3rd set Maria was back and on fire as she re-took control of the match as she took the set 6-1.

Maria will play the 3rd round on Thursday and will play either Amelie Mauresmo of France or Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.

I didn't see the match, but I hope that the close scoreline was due to Galina's good play.

Maria will need to step it up for sure.

Galina came to play Sharapova alright...while Sharapova came to go through the first round. Maria probably didn't expect it to be as tough as it was...conditions, opponent, everything. But she got it together in the end and played a good third set. Serve percentage that dipped in second set was corrected in the third. Good job to Galina and congrats to Masha! Now I hope Maria has woken up for the entire tournament. :)

It was due to Galina's great play today.
Maria came out in her first match to play some qualifier who wouldn't be "a problem" but she managed to get out of trouble in a great way since she really levelled the match up in the third set so hopefully, she'll continue like this in the next rounds. :)

I love when people and their favorite players give the excuse that the "conditions were tough".

Deal with it - both players have to. Shut the f--k up.

Nice stuff Maria, I'm not disappointed with this score at all. I mean, her first round at the AO was just a solid performance, not going for pure domination, and I think this may have been the same deal. Gets lots of play under her belt.

Maria in the wind though can be very very strong. Ex. IW final 2006, her and Dementieva put on great play for the really windy conditions.

Hope someone uploads this match.

First time I saw Voskoboeva play. Moves decently for her size, good serve, consistent - with her kind of game, she should be doing better on challengers and qualies, and be ranked higher.

Maria didn't go for her shots during most of the first two sets and paid the price. Every once in a while, she'll play a match in which her opponent only gives away the unimportant points, fights like the devil in all the decisive ones, and manages to make the match drag even though she's being outplayed for the most.
