Benin City, a city (2006 est. pop. 1,147,188) in Edo State (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edo_State%2C_Nigeria), southern Nigeria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria), is a port (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port) on the Benin River (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benin_River&action=edit). It is situated 200 miles by road east of Lagos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagos). Benin is the center of Nigeria's rubber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber) industry, but processing palm nuts (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Palm_nut&action=edit) for oil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil) is still an important traditional industry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industry), as well as producing honey-glazed ham from unused beef parts
Founded around the 10th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10th_century), Benin served as the capital of the Kingdom of Benin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Benin), the empire of the Oba of Benin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oba_of_Benin), which flourished from the 14th through the 17th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/17th_century). No trace remains of the structures admired by European travellers to "the Great Benin." After Benin was visited by the Portuguese in about 1485 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1485), historical Benin grew rich during the 16th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16th_century) and 17th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/17th_century) centuries on the slave trade with Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe), carried in Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands) and Portuguese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portugal) ships, as well as through the export of some tropical products.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin_City#_note-columbia_encyclopedia)
The Bight of Benin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bight_of_Benin)'s shore was part of the so-called "Slave Coast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slave_Coast)", from where many West Africans were sold (usually by local rulers) to foreign slave traders. In the early 16th century the Oba sent an ambassador to Lisbon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisbon), and the King of Portugal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_Portugal) sent Christian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian)missionaries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missionaries) to Benin. Some residents of Benin could still speak a pidgin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin) Portuguese in the late 19th century.
The city and kingdom of Benin declined after 1700, with the decline in the European slave trade, but revived in the 19th century with the development of the trade in palm products with Europeans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe). To preserve Benin's independence, bit by bit the Oba banned the export of goods from Benin, until the trade was exclusively in palm oil.
On 1 February 1852 the whole Bight of Benin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bight_of_Benin) became a British protectorate, where a Consul (representative) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consul_%28representative%29) represented the protector, until on 6 August 1861 the Bights of Biafra and Benin (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bights_of_Biafra_and_Benin&action=edit) became a united British protectorate, again under a ritish Consul.
In the "Punitive Expedition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punitive_Expedition)" of 1897, a 1200-strong British force, under the command of Admiral Sir Harry Rawson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Harry_Rawson), conquered and burned the city, destroying much of the country’s treasured art and dispersing nearly all that remained. The "Benin Bronzes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin_Bronzes)": portrait figures, busts, and groups created in iron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron), carved ivory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory), and especially in brass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass) (conventionally called "bronze") made in Benin are displayed in museums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum) around the world.
After the fall of Benin in 1897 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1897), the British (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) set apart Warri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warri) Province, to punish the Oba of Benin and curb his imperial power. The Benin monarchy was restored in 1914 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1914), but true power lay with the colonial administration of Nigeria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria).
In September 1967, it was the capital of the short-lived secessionist Republic of Benin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Benin) (not be confused with Benin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin)

for those who speak German, a short review from an Austrian satellite player of the conditions in Nigeria:

Das Einzige, was wir ständig hören, ist: "Be careful, it’s dangerous!"

Also ungesehen in der Brieftasche etwas schwer unterzubringen.

to sum it up: Nigeria is just not a country where you should go to let alone hosting an ITF tournament. The tournamet organization is quite good though. But its very dangerous, courts are horrible, hotel and food disgusting

Article on the Nigerian Qualifier:

The dream of Theresa Okwudike going beyond the first round of the Ogbe Hard Court tennis tournament was shattered Tuesday (19/2/2008) on court three.
Okwudike was whipped 6-1, 6-0 by Minieri Giannina of Chile in a rather one sided match, but she praised her effort for being able to get to the main draw at least.
“This is better than my appearance in 2002 when I lost in the preliminary stage. At least I got to the main draw here in spite of the problem I have. I train with old players in Lagos.
“I need a sponsor to be able to do better. Coming here, some one gave me the racket I played with and I did not want to use it any how so that I do not destroy it. I am going to give it back to her when I get to Lagos”, she said.
Okwudike is a lone ranger whose foray here is to build a career in the game of tennis just like other players. But her lack of the basic equipment for the job is bound to slow her down. At Ogbe, she played on borrowed shoes that were even oversized.
“Some one also gave me the shoes”, she added.
These short comings aside, Okwudike had hoped for the best. Before her match, her mind was willing to go. The players in the tournament this year are not as good as the ones who featured in 2002, she observed.
In the qualifiers, she had beaten an American to get to the main draw. That feat was the tonic that made her believe she was on course all the way. And she was not prepared to disturb her concentration anymore by bothering about the records of her opponents.
“I don’t want to know the rating of my opponent”, she said before her match yesterday. “I just want to meet her on the court. I am sure I will advance farther this time but I want you to pray for me”.
That prayer she actually got but it was a different ball game on court three when she met the no-nonsense Giannini who confronted her with some balls of fire. And the result was the 6-1, 6-0 thrashing that she got.
Okwudike is out of the way at least for this week and the only consolation is that she will try her luck again next week when the second fixture takes off.

That's sad... I've never thought the level of the Nigerian players is so low...

Good luck to Theresa next week, hopefully she'll be able to advance in the second round!!!
