can someone confirm if there was an injury timeout at 6-5 in the 3rd? and if so who called it?

Demska
Feb 10th, 2008, 10:25 AM
Aga called an injury time out at *56 for blisters.

Amazing tournament from Craybas. She has had a few very good tournaments in her career, Miami 04 & 06, Wimbledon 05, and Tokyo 02. But especially considering this tournament came with Jill aged 33 certainly ranks right up with the very best. I hope Jill isn't too disappointed. She should be very proud herself, she played great thoughout the tournament.

Aga should be very relieved. Very clear Aga was running on empty. Not to take anything away from Jill as only a great performance could have exploited this. But this scoreline definately validates the decision not to play Anterp. On the basis of this result Aga was not going to go far there at all that's for sure.

Well done Aga. You showed a lot of heart. Now rest up. :yeah:

I didn't watch the match but I don't get a feeling Aga choked. I get the feeling Jill's 3rd set comeback was more a combination of fine play by Jill in conjuction with Aga's heavy schedule this year finally catching up with her. I think she was probably just hanging on for dear life. And yeah, I do suspect that injury timeout for blisters was to buy time to regain a little energy. Again that is just speculation as I did not see the match, but I suspect right now Aga is one very exhausted knackered young woman.

hopefully you are right ;) this would mean she has finally learnt how to deal with such problems as luck of energy :p

You're not allowed to take injury time outs anymore?

I'm sure Aga was playing within the rules. But I also suspect she was doing whatever she could to buy time to regain some strength. I don't hold it against her. I don't like to see timeouts taken when it is deliberately designed to unsettle the opponent. I don't believe Aga was doing that. For one thing the timeout came before her service game not Craybas's.

But yeah I think it would seem likely that Aga needed time to recoup at that point and she did what she could to get it. Some might not like that, personally I'm okay with it, I think most players would do the same thing in that situation.

Great week for both players. And folks you may not like Jill Craybas but you have to admit that for a player that is approaching 35 that it's great she can still get to finals of WTA events.

She is proof that in tennis doesn't have to end when you hit 30. She works hard, is fitter than most players half her age and what she lacks in power she gains in fighting spirit.

Big time congrats to her making the final.

You're not allowed to take injury time outs anymore?

of course it was within the rules.

whether it was within the spirit of the game is a more complex question.

i think these tactical timeouts taken to have a rest and upset the flow of your opponent, maybe causing a total momentum shift, are a blight to the game and have been for some time. i think the rulesneed to be changed, though i'm not quite sure how they could be worded to prevent it.

Well...saw the match live and I must say one of the most entertaining match so far this year!!

Great rallies and beautiful shots...Very little number of unforce errors but tons of winners indeed

Quite a quality match considering this is just a tierIV :worship:

Jill won me over today!! Never have thought she could play like this...You guys wouldn't believe me if I'm saying that she reminded me of Chanda Rubin when she was on top:angel: She hit with lots of pace today and went for the line the whole match (Not quite sure about the stat, but I believe she had more winners than Aga) Too bad she went back to the passive mode when she was leading 6-5 3rd set:fiery:

For Aga, I guess I wouldnt call she chocked today, she held her nerve well alas
You must have seen one point where Jill dared to hit a forehand drive winner on one of Aga's MP :worship:
Well, For Aga's blister and injury time-out, the camera zoomed to her foot and I did see it...It was quite bad indeed, so i think the time-out is ok for Aga I believe:angel:

Understand that this would be the last time this tournie will be held I supposed (Tammy gave the interview to the local newspaper about this), great way to end the memorable tournament though with this great match:hug:

A glorious and unexpected winning streak of a dark horse player came to a quite unlucky end; on the one hand I do confess that I am very sad about this on the other hand I'm so proud of her for all that fine stuff she delivered in Pattaya. You have to go back quite a long time in the mist of time as a 33 year old contender last reached the final of a wta-tournament. She's a fine sportswoman and a decent character. A living dinosaur and a petite power wonder. :worship:

Congrats Aga :wavey:

I think it's a lot easier than you think. Women today have much more knowledge about fitness then they did just 25 years ago.

We are seeing more women's pros playing into there 30's more than they have been I think in any era of tennis. If anything, I think players like Jill Craybas or Tzipora Obizler prove you can still have decent results at some point in a tennis career even if you don't have early success on tour.

It's really great to see an older player go toe to toe with a younger player you would expect to win easily and than is often not happening.
