Venus Williams confirms participation in Bangalore Open

BANGALORE, FEB 4 (PTI)
The Bangalore Open will now have another added attraction with Venus Williams confirming participation and joining her sister Serena, the organisers announced here today.

"The Bangalore Open will have them", tournament director and Secretary of the Karnataka Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) Sunder Raju told reporters here.

Austria's Sybille Bammer is another player among the top 10 who will be participating in this Tier-II event, being held here at Karnataka Lawn Tennis Courts from March 3 to 9.

For the first time, as an experiment, coaches will be allowed to coach players during the matches, he said.

Thirty two players, including Serena, will vie for top honours in the tourney, which offers a total prize money of USD 600,000.

Sunder said Indian Tennis sensation Sania Mirza has not entered the Bangalore Open.

On why Sania has decided against participating, he said "you guess it. I can only say she has not entered".

I agree.

But if she really play them all - well, it would be amazing. I hope she plays at least Doha & Bangalore.

Doha - 2,500,000

I think there is a good chance Venus will show up. But I also suspect this means Serena won't show up. When was the last time both sisters appeared in the same non Slam, non Tier 1 event, particularly a non Slam, non Tier 1 event not on North American soil? I just can't see them both being here and Venus having just comfirmed that she would be here and also being by far the more dependable of the sisters seems by far the more likely of the two to attend.

I think Venus should just stick to Doha and Bangalore. It makes sense if she wants to defend her Memphis title, but the travelling probably will be more of a hindrance.

Bit of a crazy schedule for someone who had anemia only a few months ago,

3 tournaments in a row that were on the same continent forced Venus out of the YEC,

playing Doha, then flying to the US for Memphis, then flying back for Bangalore 3 weeks in a row is a very hectic schedule. Guess we'll just have to wait it out and see what happens with both her and Serena.

Well. Bangalore she wouldn't have to play until Thursday or Wednesday. ( Not sure if Saturday or Sunday final ).

Memphis is a Saturday final. That's enough travel time. And the quality of the fields will allow her the ability to adapt and recover. We'll see. No need in speculating with the girls. Just gotta' wait and see. :)

Venus can play a number of tournaments. Will she succeed is another question. Serena is the one with the lackluster dedication to her commitments. Venus and Serena are two different people.

Not really.

Since she doesn't play IW, she'll have
a two week window to rest.

Besides, how many here were b*tching when
she came off of Memphis last year and had
a three week break and blamed those three
weeks off for her not carrying that
Memphis Final form into Miami? ;)

I'm happy that she is playing Bangalore,
more points and even better ranking.

Do work Venus! :rocker:

I'd like to see Venus win all three but. She's supposed to win a lot of things and doesn't do any of them unless it's Wimbledon.

I hope she plays Bangalore and Doha. I'd like to see her play more non-American events.
