We had no chance of winning this, Russia is the country with most depth of all the countries in the world, Israel? We only have one player in the top 20, the other player got into the top 100 at age 34.

Shahar won the one match she should have won, against Safina - and she might have won against Anna as well, had she gotten the chance.

In contrast to the score, Tzipi actually raised her level in the 2nd set. Anna was all over the place in the first 3 games, but improved with every minute that passed. Tzipi did what she could. Kudos to Anna for playing a great match.
Her reaction to the crowd was hilarious and unexpected :) I've never seen her erupt like this before. She seems to handle the pressure so much better than Safina (Sharapova is obviously out of the equation).

ok defensive much, i only asked wether people thought they had become friends? you can be on a team with someone without being friends as long as they respect each other, but lately it seems more than that. i didn't say they were dogs or didn't get on.

Anna was interviewed before the 2007 USO, and they asked her if she's friends with Sharapova.
Anna said she doesn't know her, they never talk.
So the difference the last few months is that Sharapova is acting differently towards the other Russian players.

i wonder if all this Sharapova cheering out is really felt or just fake. She never played in Fed Cup before, I doubt she could care so much about a Chakvetadze-Obziler match. Additionally, the reports of her never talking or sharing anything with the team except when cameras are on are a bit suspicious. Time will tell though if the new "friendship" is really sincere or just acting.

I really had fun those two days. It was an amazing event with great tennis and atmosphere.
Watching Maria, Anna, Dinara and Elenna on court was awesome.
Shahar and Tzipi played well.
The crowed... some of the people came directly from the football stadium but the majority just cheered their players and the good tennis. Some education work required here but I hope we will get better.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but Team Israel was penalized two separate times during the Obziler match for crowd noise during points. I don't think it would have changed anything about the eventual outcome of the match,(Obziler was overmatched) but hopefully some lessons were learned about tennis etiquette and future matches in Israel will be held in a less volatile and more sportsmanlike atmosphere.

Yeah great post! A win is a win but Russia had to win this tie.

Israel has only 7 million people. In the World Group it's the team with the lowest population. Second lowest is Spain with around 40 million.

Let's not even go there with Russia.

I'm proud of Israel and her achievements. It needs more players like Peer. They had no chance in this tie but they still put out a fight.

I'm surprised that so many people are so jubilated over this win. It's like celebrating Justine Henin beating down a #100-something ranked player in the 1st round of the French Open.

Sam, it is not population that should be counted ( otherwise China would have won everything and everywhere ). It's a number of players. That's a real pool the selection is made from. And while Russia is extremaly dominant, number-wise, in WTA tennis, Russia also has an astonishingly small number of people playing the game, I am not sure Russia beats Israel even in that department.

Like.,USA has millions of people playing tennis, perhaps tens of millions. I am not sure in Russia that number exceeded 100K.In Israel it should be probably similar figure.

There is another side of it. Think about it. Tennis can be played outdoors in 99% of Russian teerritory for 4 months an year. 4. In Israel it is pobably 12. And in 90s ( and that's when all current player were developed ) it was an official number that Russia had less than 50 indoor courts - for all country. So for 8 months out of 12 Russia had less than 50 courts at its disposal. Sure, the total number of courts in Israel easily exceeds that.

Sorry but even the USSR had players like Zvereva doing well. If you had the talent, you could still play tennis and do well in Russia and it's been like that for a long time.

Tennis really is a new phenomenon in Israel. Israel also has compulsory military service for young people - they won't be playing tennis there.

In any case, there's so much more depth in Russian tennis than Israel that this obviously was a *ahem* David and Goliath match-up.

And anyone who thought Israel had a chance must've been loony. It was just played for fun.

Good post!

Were you one who screamed with others, or the one who was general observer? :)

I cheered my players very loudly (but not during the serves or points...) There were very few "general observers" in the crowed. Most of the crowed was very much involved in the game.
It's a shame that some guys that just don't know how to behave. They spoiled it and make us look so bad.

He was, probably, the guy holding the sign "Maria, I want to take you out. Call me".
There was such fan in the audience.
Was it you, The Jabberwock ? ( just kidding)

No. It was not me  This guy forgot to put his phone number...
Personally, I don't like Maria so much. During her first match against Tzipi I cheered Chaky
However, I must admit she played a great tennis and behaved in a very respectful way in a very hard conditions. Sometimes it looked like she was really having fun :worship:

Chaky is so cute. I felt really bad about this incident. Now, a day after, I hope that this incident might have helped her to free some aggressions she holds due to recent events in her life. I hope she will know to take the good out of it and wish she will not think so badly about the Israeli tennis fans. I would love to see her playing again in Israel :lick:
