congrats maria! well, it was expected

im still sad that she couldnt get that bagel in the second set. she had 6-1 5-0 40-0.

Anyway well played masha!

after their handshake I think maria said to peer that she shouldnt encouraging the crowd to scream and so.

She certainly enjoyed "shushing" the crowd a la Berdych in Madrid, and I don't know what she said to Shahar at the net but Peer stopped and gave her a bit of a look...

Funny stuff.

It was hilarious when Maria told the crowd to shush, and I wonder what she said to Shahar when they shook hands at the net.
Maria has won 18 sets out of 18 in competitive tennis matches this year.

I loved the after match interview. She said that Shahar was encouraging the crowd because she knew she could not win the match on her own. She also said this result did not surprise her because she had good results against peer always. I don't even like Maria but I wanted this.

Maria put her finger to her lips and shhed the crowd. Haha- it was funny. In her on-court interview she said "Shahar was cheering and encouraging them to get louder, which was good because it meant she couldn't find a way to win on her own." Sounds like Maria had a bit of beef with Peer!

One one hand, I am surprised where Peer's form has completely gone, first AO, now this.
I remember a much closer encounter with Masha, 6:4, 7:5, I think - at that time Maria was also playing very well.
On the other hand, Maria again (as always?) choked when closing the set and the match.
It is really difficult to understand why she gets tight at 1:0 5:0 40:0
Anyway, congratulations, Masha! A good win.

Now, the question, can the russians win one more match?

Feb 3rd, 2008, 10:45 AM
Masha was very motivated. Watching the match you can almost see how she'd just pounce on both Peer's first and second serves. Held on her own service games well until that very last game of the match where she was up 40-0.

Peer was however a tenacious fighter till the end. Though I was irritated by her gestures yesterday, she showed grit in the match today, which if I'm an Israeli, would be really proud of.

Dan23
Feb 3rd, 2008, 10:45 AM
She doesnt get particularly tight at 61 50...its more the opponent lashing out....and at times that tends to come off for short periods. On another day 3 or 4 errors and it'd go 1 and 0.

I've been waiting for this for quite some time...but what a wonderful Fed Cup debut it was for Maria! :clap2:

She won both her matches in style and won 2 of the 3 important points for her country. As someone said, the Sharapova bakery is still going strong - 60 64 & 61 61! I don't like Maria, but this was her AO form, and she's clearly the best player in the world right now. Shahar didn't even play that bad (as opposed to her 3r loss vs Lena D :o), there wasn't anything she could have done. She deserves credit for saving 4 MPs at 0-5* .

She played a great match and though I wasn't there today I saw in the TV that she couldn't be stopped! I love this girl even though she almost single handedly def. Israel in this tie.

Shahar had some good points but Maria didn't let her get into the match. And about Shahar encouraging the crowd, when will you all get that she did it only between points and she will never encourage them to cheer for a DF or something like that because she is a professional (when some of you get to her level you could talk but in the meantime...).

HitmanX

Israel loss is expected but I'm so sad Maria won both of her matches.
She came here with a dozen body guards as if she was a president visiting a hostile country. separated from the rest of her team in training and in her arrival without making a single interview except those she must.
even when the Russian team went up the court yesterday, there was a body guard right after
Maria and then the rest of the team. I won't use inappropriate language to describe what i feel about her.
I wish i understood how people here are able to actually like here.

I bet that they really liked her this week.

Actually I think that people overeacting with the haterd Maria gets from her teamates.
All the time she was in Israel she didn't pay much attention to the other girls. But when the tie started they all cheered for her (making a lot of noise!) and hugging her after wins (it looks like she and Dinara get well together) and Anna gave her a hugg after she won Tzipi to give Russia the win.

Though I must say, Israel loved Maria the most! What you saw in the crowd wasn't even near to all the pablicity she got here, almost everyday in the newspaper there were like a page dedicated to her. Almos every show on TV talked about here, there was even one show (Good night with Guy Pines) that tonight show was all about Sharapova (I didn't see it so I don't know what was in there)... Israel loves Maria, thar is for sure! :bounce:

Though I must say, Israel loved Maria the most! What you saw in the crowd wasn't even near to all the pablicity she got here, almost everyday in the newspaper there were like a page dedicated to her. Almos every show on TV talked about here, there was even one show (Good night with Guy Pines) that tonight show was all about Sharapova (I didn't see it so I don't know what was in there)... Israel loves Maria, thar is for sure! :bounce:

They show/display their love in a strange way

I know this is hard to grasp, but some of us can actually acknowledge defeat to a better player (http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=12436935&postcount=37).
Did I hurt your feelings by criticizing your sacred Maria? Her teammates aren't really fond of her too, you know.

U dont hurt my feelings :spit: u know jealousy and hatred arent good feelings  try to overcome it :D

Peer had a beatdown coming and Masha gave it to her! :smash:  After all the nonsense that Peer participated in this Fed Cup Tie it was great and very deserving that she got humiliated by Sharapova in front of her Israeli people. :D

"matanuriel", it's the media made a mountain out of a molehill.
from what I've been reading in different Israeli sports forum people don't like her and the exaggerated media coverage.

Svetlana, what concerns? cheering during points? wow,i hope she's ok.....

Looks like Israelis are trying to invent new behavior standards on a tennis court and disrespect the old traditions.

how has it anything to do with maria's arrogant behavior before the game or her request
for extra security which even presidents don't get?

If you don't like Maria then don't worry about her, instead worry about Shahar's arrogant behavior towards Maria and other Russians as the first time guests/visitors to Israel.

It is very pleasing to watch Maria growing up and becoming more strong and powerful woman in mental and every other aspect. She can handle everything beautifully and with ease now, is it tough opponent on the court, bunch of reporters or unruly crowds. :)

from a press conference early in the AO:

Q. Are you intending to come with the Russian team in the Fed Cup to
Israel?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Oh, yeah, definitely.

Q. For sure?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yes.

Q. The Israeli crowd is expecting you very much.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Thank you. I expect to conquer them (laughter).

Maria has a wonderful sense of humour---based on truthfulness.

Maria has a reason to be confident about herself considering how talented she is. Well for Peer...lets not go there.

Actually, I and some peoples, a lot of them here, think that she is.

And some famous people in some countries in some situations really need some extra security.
Do you know what happened to Monica Seles in Germany right on the court?
Maria has all the rights in the world to ask for extra security and to get it.

She has a lot of rights now, and it looks like she'll get everything she wants.

Shahar has loving friends, supportive family, a nice boyfriend, good connection with her team-mates.

Maria? She got Yuri, you know, the guy who was blabbing on his cell phone when she made her 2006 USO speech?

I mean, Maria's only supporter did a slashing sign when she beat Justine, and Maria defended him/lied for him in the presser - she shouldn't be talking about class.

Yuri is family and even if he is an asshole, he has been loyal to Maria for all her life. He has sacraficed all his time to be with her on the road. I think it's admirable that she sticks up for the the people that she loves. A Yuri isn't Maria's "only supporter" she has her mom, Michael Joyce, assorted friends and family, and her legion of mashabators....like me. ;)
