The top four seeds, Anna, Daniela, Bartoli and Dementieva all receive byes to the second round. There's not a whole lot separating any of those four, so I'd argue whoever gets the best draw would become a small favorite to win. That foursome would actually make for a very competitive and fun semifinals should it come to pass.

Good luck Anna. :)

So there could be a QF rematch against Amelie. Anna's run her close on indoors but never beaten her. She should be fired up from the Fed Cup win so if she brings that to Paris she could really give her season a kickstart.

Good luck Anna! I would love to see a Anna vs Daniela final. The toughest two in Anna's qf look to be Azarenka and Mauresmo. Azarenka has been playing pretty good tennis at the beginning of the year and after a dissapointing AO for Mauresmo she could be looking to rebound. Though Anna is playing pretty good as of FC so let's hope that carries over to Paris. :)

Anna Chakvetadze: “I’m looking towards the future”

18:29 - 05/02/2008 - Damien MERCEREAU
The top seed at the Open Gaz de France, Anna Chakvetadze is trying to recover from a tough start to the year. In December, she was robbed in her Moscow home, a trauma the Russian player is looking to put behind her. (Photo: Panoramic)

Anna Chakvetadze, your first match is scheduled for Thursday. Is it good to be getting such a late start?
Yes, it’s good for me because this is my first indoor tournament and I need to get some more training in before playing my first match. I’m going to try to play my best tennis and improve with each match.
How would you explain your rough start to the year – a first-round exit in Sydney followed by a third-round showing at the Australian Open?
I had been training in Moscow, but I think that I wasn’t sharp enough to make a run at the title in Australia. Something happened to me during the off season – (ed. note: Anna was robbed and tied-up in her secondary residence in Moscow on 18 December) – and I wasn’t able to prepare like I would’ve liked. It was all very tough to handle. But, now things are going better. I’m getting back on my feet and, mentally, I managed to put that trauma behind me. My level of play is improving. I started the year poorly, but I think that’s only normal. What happened is in the past. I’m looking towards the future and want to focus on this tournament.
Looking back, do you regret playing the Australian Open?
I wanted to play. I really made up my mind to go. Maybe I thought it’d help me get through things. I told that myself that playing would help me get over what I went through. I love Australia, I love the tournament, and I wanted to see what I was capable of. I know I didn’t play good enough, but I don’t have any regrets. I feel so much better today.
Did it also do you good to play Fed Cup for Russia in the tie against Israel?
Yes, I love playing for my country. Last year, we won the Fed Cub, and I hope we will do the same this year. No offense to France, of course! (laughs). I want to keep playing in the Fed Cup. In the next round, we’ll play the United States in Moscow. It’s important for me to be there and represent my country.
Russia’s coach has a lot of players to choose from right now…
Yes. There are so many great players in Russia. And only the best ones are selected. Some players didn’t want to travel to Israel. Me, Maria (Sharapova), Dinara (Safina), and Elena (Vesnina) were there, and it would only be fair for all of us to be called back for the next round (ed. note: Dementieva, Kuznetsova, Petrova and Zvonareva had higher WTA rankings than Vesnina). At home in Moscow, everyone is going to want to play, but we shouldn’t change the team. I think the coach understands that and he will have to make that decision.

Anna plays Amelie

Chakvetadze: "Looking forward to facing Amelie"

15:20 - 07/02/2008 - Rédaction Open Gaz de France

Through to the quarterfinals after downing Nathalie Dechy, Anna Chakvetadze was happy with her first-round match. And, she is looking forward to facing home-crowd favorite Amélie Mauresmo in the next round. (Photo: Panoramic)

Anna, how would you rate your performance today?
I wasn't expecting such an easy match. That could explain that short lapse of concentration in the second set when Nathalie raised her level a bit. It was my first match indoors and I hope to improve going into the next round.
What happened in the second set. You had a 3 love lead but let Dechy back in the set. Was it due to a lapse in concentration or did your opponent just raise her level?
A little of both. Everything started so well and I felt like the match would get easier and easier. But, you've got to stay focused on every point.
Did you get a little worried when Dechy levelled the second set at 3-3?
Not really. I got things back on track right away and took the last three games.
"Not the favorite"
How are you feeling now that the tournament has started?
For a first-round match, I'm feeling good. I warmed up on Court I and was happy to take to Central Court. I like the way it plays.
You might face Amélie Mauresmo in the quarterfinals.
(Laughs) We'll see. I know the fans will be on her side, but I'm looking forward to facing Amélie here in Paris. I think we would have a good match. But, she has to get past Daniilidou first…
With your number 1 seed, do you feel like the favorite here?
Not at all. I'm taking it one match at a time without looking too far ahead.

Feb 7th, 2008, 07:56 PM
Congrats on win to Anna! It sounds like she played a good match and that she is in the right frame of mind. She is looking at it one match at a time and not like she should just come out and dominate and win the whole thing just because she is the number 1 seed.

Good luck in the next round Anna! :)

Anna plays Amelie in the night match.

"It was my first indoor match this season and it went okay," said Chakvetadze, who burst into the limelight last year by winning four titles and reaching the U.S. Open semi-finals.
"I didn't think it would be that easy. My concentration dropped a bit in the second set but I was able to recover."
The 20-year-old Chakvetadze will meet former world number one Amelie Mauresmo of France or Eleni Daniilidou of Greece for a place in the semi-finals.
"Both are very strong players," Chakvetadze said. "It will be a tough match."

That's a great early season win for Anna over Mauresmo in Paris. :D I hope Anna has put her ordeal of being robbed and tied up last December behind her and is 100% focused on her game. I think losing to Makiri in Melbourne stung her and beating Obziler in Israel in Fed Cup really fired Anna up. She needed a win like that after a dissapointing Australian Open. Now she's beaten Maursmo in Paris. :) Anna seems to be in good from again and that should be a good sign of things to come.

Chakvetadze admitted she would have to get off to a better start Sunday than her past two matches after trailing 0-3 in the first set against both Bartoli and Amelie Mauresmo in Friday's quarter-final.
"I have to be ready to go straight away, not like today and yesterday, you can't win a final like that," said the Russian.
"She (Szavay) plays much better on indoor court. She played a tough match today, Elena was close to winning."
French number one Bartoli had been carrying home hopes after the elimination of two-time winner Mauresmo.
But her bid to become the sixth French winner of the event in it's 16-year history came unstuck as she was treated for a back problem picked up during the second set.
A tearful Bartoli, ranked nine, came back on court but was not in the match as world number seven Chakvetadze claimed victory on her first match point as the French player weakly hit into the net.
"I think I'm getting old, that's the only explanation," said 23-year-old Bartoli, who won her only previous meeting with Chakvetadze last year.
"It's even more disappointing because I really had the impression that I had the match in my hand and would have loved to win here in Paris."

The proper way to give the score at this point in the match was 2-6 5-2 since Chakvetadze lost the first set 2-6 and was leading 5-2 in the second. ;)

I hope Anna's not nervous about playing a younger player in Szavay in the final. If Anna gets off to a good start in the match she should be fine.

Damn! I was watching her semis match live but Anna was playing so bad in the first set, I really thought Marion will flatten her out (well not physically of course haha!!) in the second. And I was so sleepy so I went to bed after she lost the first set. I was surprised to see today that she won and with a bagel too. I should have stayed up and watch. :o

I think Anna will be in a lot of trouble against Szavay. That girl serves so well. Elena who is a superb returner was having a hard time breaking her serve. Szavay though tends to drop her level during matches so Anna has to take advantage of that.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believed Anna has never lost in a final right?

i watched all the match

both played ugly in the first two sets. many ue (65 in 2 sets) and only 23 winners in the two first sets.

Anna played really well in the third. She came into the net a lot more and made a lot of balls, moving Agnes around the court, with little ue.

Well done Anna!

Well done to Anna on beating Anges Szavay 6-3 2-6 6-2 to win the Paris Indoors title and her first title of the year. :) Now Anna is an amazing 7-0 in WTA Tour finals. :D Anna is now playing tough and clutch tennis after starting 2008 slowly. And I think playing Fed Cup for Russia in Israel with the loud crowd out of control against Anna and her compatriots brought out the inner Lioness and killer instinct in Anna! :shout: :cat:

Tennis player Chakvetadze wins seventh WTA title in Paris

PARIS (AFP) — Top seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia claimed her seventh WTA title on Sunday, beating Hungary's Agnes Szavay in three sets at the Paris Indoor Open.
The 20-year-old from Moscow maintained her unbeaten record in finals with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory in 2hr 05min against seventh-seed Szavay.
"It just happened that I won all seven finals. I don't think it's amazing it just happened," said Chakvetadze.
"I had to fight for it, but I'm very happy with this win. I think I deserve it. I knew that she would fight to the end and never give up."
Szavay, 19, had a disastrous start giving away five double faults in her first two service games to find herself 0-4 down after 15 minutes.
Despite a sixth double fault Szavay finally held her serve and came back to 3-4 but her world number seven opponent held and broke to love to take the first set in 37 minutes.
The situation was reversed in the second set with the 20th-ranked Hungarian responding to some motivating words from her coach to take a 4-0 advantage and keep herself in the tie as Chakvetadze lost just her second set in seven finals.
The Russian was treated for a left shoulder problem just before the third set and had to save two break points in the fifth game, before gaining the edge when she broke in the following game.
The break proved crucial as Chakvetadze nailed the title on her second match point to succeed compatriot Nadia Petrova and become the third Russian to hold the Paris title.
"In the second set I had so many unforced errors. I had problems with my shoulder. Yesterday I called my trainer because of my hip. I guess I'm getting older," said Chakvetadze who said that she was uncertain whether she will be fit to compete in Antwerp next week.
Chakvetadze won four of her previous titles in 2007, and said her focus this season will be on the Grand Slams after reaching the US Open semi-final and the quarter-finals of last year's Australian Open and Roland Garros.
"My goal is to be in the final of a Grand Slam and hopefully one day that will happen," said the Russian who reached the third round of the 2008 Australian Open.

Yeah it was almost a bit like her reaction in Fed Cup. Of course not as crazy but I've noticed that she is certainly more animated on the court now. ;) :)

I got to watch the match on TV and it's nice to see Anna playing so well in particular in the 3rd set. I haven't seen her play like that since the US Open and in the YEC. I supposed this means her confidence is back on track. :)

And an impressive 7-0 record in the finals. :rocker2:

:woohoo:WOOT! Way to go Anna! This was a really good match (well at least the 3rd set) between two players that I really enjoy watching. Way to finish strong Anna! Congratulations on the 7-0 finals record too!

A very good tournament for Anna. She fought off 3 tough opponents in a row to take this title. As long as she is healthy enough, she should have a good run at Antwerp also. If she is not healthy enough I would rather see her sit out a tourney or two rather than have a year like Sharpova or Hingis had last year with the lingering injuries really taking a toll on their entire season.

Great win! :hearts: :hug::smooch:
