Serena Williams to play in Bangalore Open

The USD 600,000 Bangalore Open, to be held here from March 3-9,received a big boost today with crowd-puller Serena Williams confirming her participation.

Twentysix-year-old Serena is a former world number one and winner of eight grand-slam singles titles. She is currently ranked number seven on the WTA Tour.

A star attraction, the US player had pulled out of the Bangalore Open last year at the last moment, saying she was not feeling well at the time.

Officials of Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA), the hosts, say this time Serena is sure to turn out.

"Serena showed her greatness when her office called and said she would like to come back to Bangalore as she missed coming here last year and would like to make up for that", Tournament Director and KSLTA Secretary Sunder Raju told reporters.

It was also announced that Vera Zvonareva of Russia has also confirmed her participation in the tournament. The 23-year-old from Moscow, who had reached her career high ranking of world number nine on August nine, 2004, is currently ranked 22 on the WTA Tour.

The Champion of the Bangalore Open would take home USD 95,500 and 300 WTA points. The tournament was a tier-III event with prize money of USD 175,000 last year and has been upgraded to a tier-II event from 2008 season.

Raju said CEO of Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, Larry Scott, would visit Bangalore during the event.

I like this. More than actually playing, but playing this tournament that she missed last year and experiencing the place and people. Proud of Serena for having it on her schedule.

Perhaps her schedule matches her exuberance for the season -- hopefully.

I agree. She said that she got rid of allot of things that were holding her back and taking away from her tennis is the past years. So it seems now she is more focused on playing tennis :yeah:
