I think it is time for Jelena to win her first Grand Slam title, even that wont be easy :scared:

Jelena in 3 :yeah:

Based on today's performances, Maria will win 6-1; 6-0. I'm not even kidding. If Maria serves decently, she won't lose serve, and she'll break Jelena over half the time. If Justine, Lindsay and Elena couldn't even win 5 games off Sharapova, why should Jelena be able to win 12?

^^ true. Sharapova will win easily;)

Sorry to say that, but if Jelena Jankovic would be able to make GS final, that means everyone is able. Maria in 2- 6/2 6/0 if she'll be on, 6/4 6/3 if she'll be off

Maria will win it. Jelena's court play although very well but Maria's serve far superior than Jelena and she will be right on her backfoot when Maria's 1st serves goes in.

Hmm I'm not so sure Maria will win in two easy sets. Jelena is like Vicario. She gets many balls back. After she beat Serena tonight, I'm going for Maria in 3 sets. LMAO.
Maria is good, but I don't see this in two easy sets.

No doubt Sharapova, quick and easy

mb011
Jan 22nd, 2008, 11:21 AM
She obviously had all things her way today, but will it be enough if jelena keeps her off balance and keeps returning to many ball as she did with serena. If jelena gets inspired, she might just prevail. Its a good thing she will be the underdog, no pressure. Ajde jelena!

Just Do It
Jan 22nd, 2008, 11:22 AM

She crushed Davenport, Dementieva and Henin so far. Jelena is next.

masha in two straight sets. she will take revenge for her last three set defeat on grass. Masha is definitely on fire. Great serve, good movement and she played well on the net. I think that she will win 6-2 6-0. Davai Masha.

Jelena in straight sets. Something just tells me that it's Jelena's time to shine.

In other words, head says Maria, heart says Jankobitch. But I don't think Jelena will be intimidated by Maria at all, despite the form. If you're not scared of laughing at a struggling Serena, you're not scared of anything.

From all I have seen from Pova during these days, I think that this will be really ugly unless she completely loses her confidence and play.

Pova - the most enchanting Jelena 6-2, 6-1

Jelena will try to do everything she always does. Move Maria around and force her into errors and outplay her. If Maria is in the same form as her match against Justine that won't be a problem. She will crush Jelena's serve with her returns and serve her off the court. The few rallies that will occur will be won by Maria as well. In other words Maria will win in straight easy sets. Jelena only has a chance against these players when they make to many mistakes and Maria seems to be in form again.

This was the unlikely match-up (especially with Sharapova beating Henin), but it should be an interesting match. I think Sharapova has played the best tournament of her career and it doesn't look like it will stop in the semis. Having said that it is impossible to overlook Jankovic. She is once again the higher ranked player and she certainly has a chance. She played crap from the start of the tournament yet still beat Serena in the QF.

I think Sharapova will in in straights, but would not be surprised at all if it is a Jankovic win.

I was shocked when I read the news this morning about both Jankovic and Sharapova's wins. I saw that Jankovic had won the first set against Serena yesterday, so I had an inkling that she might win, but I more surprised about Sharapova's win against Henin. WOW  I agree with what Tennisbear said in his/her other thread about Sharapova not being out of trouble yet. I think Jankovic can beat anyone not named Henin and now she doesn't even have to face her. It would be nice to see Jankovic be able to win her first Slam. She sure would have an accomplishment more than Ivanovic. :D

I hope to god, for Jelena's sake, that she didn't watch Masha's match tonight. ;)

Maria's last 4 matches:

def. Lindsay 6-1 6-3
def. Vesnina 6-3 6-0
def. LenaD 6-2 6-0
def. Justine 6-4 6-0

That's a total of 13 dropped games, over four matches. With three bagels tossed in for good measure. I mean, COME ON! Unless Masha breaks her ankle, this isn't even going to be close.

I predict something along the lines of 6-2 6-0 for Maria.

Quite honestly, the way Masha played tonight, I can't see anyone beating her.

People shouldn't underestimate Jelena :p but I think Masha will win 6/4 6/3 :p Jelena beat Masha last year in Birmingham (coming back from 1/3 in the last set), I think Masha would love to take her revenge and that she is extremely determined to win the AO :bounce: :bounce:! I like both but goooo Masha :bounce: :bounce:!

I think Jelena will win it, it's just the conditions that make me say that. She saved MPs against Tamira, nobody expected her to be alive in 2nd week ... but she is there. Maria on the other side delivered a flawless performance to beat the number 1, pressure is on her ... I don't think she can play as well as she did today and JJ is suprisingly more aggressive than Justine ...

So I say Jelena in three, 36 64 62.

Sharapova 62 61 ( I wouldn't be surprised if it was 60 60 but for the sake of women's tennis I hope not)

The only way Jankovic wins is if Sharapova has the serving yips gain and starts hitting DF like crazy and missing on her forehand a lot. Which could happen.......we'll see but I highly doubt it.

Tennisation
Jan 22nd, 2008, 06:53 PM
everyone kept talking about Jelena's court coverage, but look at what happened last night with Justine, she's one of the best defense player in the world and made Maria hit lots of extra shots that would have been winners against anyone else, what makes u think Jelena's defense is gonna be better than Justine? Besides, Jelena has no weapons to hurt Maria....Maria in straight sets, case close!

Sharapova serves very good so far, but JJ is a good returner for the most part. If she goes for her shots like today against Serena, she could create some window for herself.
I'm much more worried about JJ's service games, it's nerve wrecking. She gets a tough fought break, then ends up losing her serve in a second.
Also, I think JJ is a headcase and cannot keep focus long enough. If she could overcome that, it would be a lot different.
So I regretfully have to say I feel Sharapova is sealing this one.
Prove me wrong Jelena!!

People have brought up how people usually don't back up wins over Serena. I decided to test how true this is.

I will ignore the YEC & Zurich '07 and Dubai '05 SF because she didn't finish the matches and YEC 04 F because of the span of a season.

If you REALLY care that much, Chakvetadze solidified her win over Serena with a win over Jankovic, Schnyder lost to Schiavone after she beat Serena, Jankovic lost to Davenport in the Dubai F, and Maria probably won her first match of 2005 after the YEC 04 F.

2008:
Melbourne QF - Jankovic def. Williams 63 64

I'm counting seven times. Three at majors (Heninx2, Mauresmo). Four times if you include slam finals being a win. Both previous times Jankovic beat Serena she lost in the next round and only top names like Henin, Mauresmo, and Sharapova have solidified slam victories over Serena.

I think Jelena can pull this one out. She is not intimidated by big hitters and if you look at the H2H between Venus, Davenport and Sharapova who have similar playing styles as big aggressive hitters with strong serves, she has always competed very well.

Expect a 3set match IMO. Hopefully, Jankovic saw the match and won't be stupid enough to just hit balls to the middle of the court.
