This was supposed to be easy for Serena. If Justine wins now, it will go from being a great grand slam to a shit one, knowing Jelena will choke again to Henin. Please win Maria, I'm begging of you. :sobbing:

I really thought Serena was going to win this one, that is until they showed some footage of Serena practising this morning and something was CLEARLY wrong. She looked frustrated and just out of sorts. I like Serena and Jelena pretty equally, and it's pretty dumb to say this result isn't a bit of a suprise. Congrats Jelena, you're a smart little b*tch in a best possible way. :)

Serena played really bad in the first set. She looked like a mammoth staying on the lines, hit huge but never move. She came back then wich resulted in the best second set of the tournament so far. Finally Jelena won, and this makes me really happy, because I didn't like today's Serena at all. This was a woman Roddick which exactly the opposite of what I like in tennis.

one question though...what happened between vaidisova and jj...in one match she's great and then the next she plays how she did...i mean if anyone denies serena played total crap is just delusional...

Jelena just kept the ball in..thats all she needed to do. Serena hit more winning, but she had more unforced errors. Jelenas serving was average, she didnt play with power but placed the ball well..what got her over was her swiftness and she kept the ball in play...and waited for Serena to make an error. Serenas first serve was absolutely gone....like I said earlier..night and day from the way she played...she was a complete let down to her fans today....thats not the grand slam Serena we use to seeing.

I think there are two keys factors.

First of all, this loss is due to Serena flatness (injury). She wasn't there physically it's clear as water.
Moreover, Jeca COULD return Serena's serve. Thus Rena was forced to play rallies and fatigue herself as Jeca is a great defender.

Serena reach the qurters because of her serve and return of serve.

In her previous matches, she was really slow, she was overpowered and wrong footed by her opponents most of the time. But in those matches serena's serve was there and her return of serve were booming taking pace from her big-serving opponents returning with interest...

She serve so many aces and unreturnables..
She also had a lot of winners on her returns...
But on the rallies stretching beyond 3 strokes, she almost always lost the point.

Its the same here against Jelena, only that Jelena was more consistent than her previous 3 opponents making her to hit extra balls...
And since Jelena is a puff-server, Serena could not take pace on those serves for a booming returns...

Add to that, her serve was nowhere there...

YOU BLIND?Jelena was attacking every second and some first serves with power and deep which setup short balls ofc which Jelena put with ease.
Roles were reversed this is Serena style of play so Jelena beat her in her own game.:)

Serena had a really bad day. I really don't know what went wrong. She was all pumped the last round. Maybe they played too much tennis with singles and doubles. I'm pretty sure that Serena will pull out of the doubles. Which is okay because I would rather have Venus rest and save her body and energy for the singles.

I'm really just stunned...didn't see this coming in any way. Obviously Serena had some big issues coming out of her practice this morning, so she was very flat today, especially in the 1st set. Unfortunately for her, this seemed to give JJ a new lease and she started playing some really great, mostly error-free tennis. Serena did raise her game in the 2nd set...she is such a champion, to fight when it seems uphill like that. Nothing but respect for her from me today.

JJ, against the odds...great work :worship:

For a set and 4-5 games Serena's 1st serve avg speed was under 100mph
And she won less than 30% on her 2nd serve  And she DF at Deuce in her serve to give up MP

She was hitting the ball okay but moving poorly and and serving horribly. That has to be one of her worst serving days I've seen since 2004 YEC where she got injured.

Great win for Jelena but she is def. playing badly. I know she won in straights but she really has to step it up or she's going to get creamed in the SF. Cuz she was passive and hitting a lot of puff balls and even worse serves.

Overall just  Serena didn't look injured but she hit some 1st serve in at less than 90 mph. And her 2nd serves were really short in the box. If she had served a little better I think she would have won in straight...cuz Jelena was not playing that well out there. She played the same she has all tournament.

Couple of thoughts.

Something wasn't right with Serena's game today - whether the blister, or something else, I'm not sure, but her level dropped compared to Vaidisova. Her footwork was terrible, especially positioning for the backhand, which she kept just trying to do with the arms, her movement on the stretch was sluggish and she had the turning circle of a small ocean liner.

Serena can and does play much better than that.

None of which alters the fact that Jankovic played a very solid, consistent, intelligent match. She didn't give an awful lot away, she moved her opponent around to expose the movement issues, she was attacking much better than I have seen her do in the past, and she was doggedly determined, even when she was broken back time and time again, she didn't let her shoulders drop. You can't do that against a Williams, and to her great credit, she kept plugging away until the result came. She made it quite a compelling match to watch, even if the tennis was uneven - mainly from Williams but at times from Jankovic as well.

An important win for her - it's always an important win when you can knock off a Williams in the latter stages of a Grand Slam.

It does not get easier though.

mckyle.
Jan 22nd, 2008, 02:59 AM
Honestly, if Serena would just fix her footwork (it can't be that difficult) then she would be a completely different player. Poor footwork can get you by those scrubs in the first week, but you really have to take smaller steps instead of taking these huge leaps at the ball. If she would just fix that one part she could be amazing.

I'm sorry you're taking it so hard, but just accept it and float on by. Serena is in better shape in 2008, and i'm sure whatever issues she had during this match, will be taken care of - and she'll be in good fighting shape for the 3 upcoming slams and other big tournaments. She's still a major contender, just couldn't win this one.

And really, if she has to lose, would you rather she lose to Jelena - or lose yet 4 times in a row, at all 4 slams to Henin (who quite frankily is the favourite to win her match). It's a blip along the road - no more. She's off to her mansion, to cry on her millions of dollars... that doesn't sound too bad to me.

I don't think Serena's serve was the problem. 60% first serve percentage is not amazing, but not bad at all. However the 25% of second serve winning ratio is pathetic. Jelena outplayed her, kept the ball in and smartly waited for Serena to miss.

Those comments about "if Serena plays her best, she beats anyone" are ridiculous. There are at least 10 players - or even more - who can potentially beat everyone in a tournament, playing their best. But this is so pointless and hypotethical if one does not play her best.

She played like a loser. She seriously needs to lose 15-20 lb if she is serious about winning any grand slams. Footwork was absent. I like Serena but either she was injured or she isn't putting enough time into tennis. Even when you have off days, your footwork should not falter and many times, that's what keeps you in the game until you can get your groundstrokes working.

I don't know why everyone's saying Serena played badly, because when I checked the stats (Serena / Jankovic):

Winners: 34 / 22
UE: 36 / 17

Those seem like pretty good stats to me! I'll watch the match when I get back from work to see how Jelena managed to win this one!

Edit: It seems like Serena was serving like sh!t with only 2 aces and 5 DF

Exactly! If Serena pulls the "I made so many errors" excuse she is so full of it. Statistically she played a solid match - now if she had 50 UE, then it would be different. Girl got outplayed - it happens!

you're so delusional it's not even funny. Go to bed too but do not forget to no wake up until the AO is over... more bitter surprises are for you to come!:wavey:

No it's just the truth. The only reason Maria and Henin fans are so happy, is because they know they got a free ticket to the final. I'm doing you a favour by pointing this out to you so you don't get your hopes up. It will be UGLY and it may take months for Jelena to grin again! Shame it will be in front of her mother as well.

You must be joking, right?

Whatever the result of a big match around here, there's an army of very silly babies throwing their toys out of the pram.

One reason I don't come on here so much - it's hard work actually discussing the tennis with all the noise going on around it.
Well as a mod, I have to read through some crap around GM unfortunately (although i don't when I have the choice), so sometimes I just can't shut up...

I'm happy that JJ won, but I also sympathized for Serena. I wanted to see an epic clash, and I surprised myself when I cheered Serena on against my favorite player. Seeing her downcast face every time she hit a UE did break my heart a little. Oh, Serena

Embarassing for womens tennis, to say the least. She was smiling and laughing the whole time after her win, that's inappropriate and I hope the next time Serena kicks her ass she jumps all over the court laughing and thinking she's all that.

Jankovic, can't wait to see you pound on the makeup before your semifinal. :o

--

Moving on - Congrats to Smiley. She got lucky today, but she had to step up and win, and fought really hard herself. Shame whomever wins the next match will DESTROY HER!!! I mean... we might have to pray for her and her family, i bet it'll be so bad!

Serena - Poor performance, but you did it to yourself. Get your act together and start performing like you can consistently!

Serena looks fit and in shape but at the end her footwork still sucks (and it was the same in all her matches).Jelena played a very good match tactically, she attacks Serena's second serves and her backhand was on.Luck has nothing to do with that.In fact, I would say that Serena was lucky to score 7 games today.

Nope, Hingis taking drugs at Wimbledon, yes.

Let me educate you real quick. Let's do some basic math, shall we ?

A nanogramm is one-billionth of a gram, or numerically 0.000000001 of a gram. I can't even comprehend how small of an amount that is.

Martina's sample supposedly had 42 one billionths of a gram of the metabolite of cocaine. That is 0.000000042 of a gram, written numerically.

Martina's sample supposedly had 42 ng/ml (nanograms per mililiter) and the threshold for a US military cocaine positive is 150 ng/ml and the standard cocaine drug test is 300 ng/ml.

Just how sensitive is this WTA drug test ? I would argue it is too sensitive and/or the threshold needs to be standardized against a real world comparison.

There are no other real world drug tests where 42 ng/ml is considered a positive.

END OF STORY.

I could have 42 ng/ml in my urine just from handling too many banknotes. All European banknotes are filthy with massive amounts of cocaine.

Period.

I'm geared up for a Williams-less final ! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:  :wavey:

OMG, i'm not talking about lucky Shot, but you can't watch that match and tell me Serena's backhand was fine! How many times did a cross court backhand end up half way up the net of the side she was on. And her serving. I can't include her poor shot selection - going for some dodgy drop shot - but my point is that she was clearly sub-par - and JELENA WAS LUCKY GETTING A SUB-PAR SERENA. Let me educate you on something very quickly (or not so quickly).

There shouldn't have been ANY cocaine in Martina's system. Every other WTA player is held to the same drug cut-off thresholds and they test negative. Why shouldn't Hingis be held to the same standard as every other professional tennis player on the planet?

And for your information, when she was banned from the sport for two years, HINGIS DECLINED TO APPEAL.

Hingis is guilty as sin, accepted her banishment from the sport, and is no longer an issue in the sport of tennis.

You should move along too, because the Hingis excuse-o-rama is getting quite old.

Jan 22nd, 2008, 03:45 AM
There was nothing wrong with Serena to the point she couldn't play. How many other players do we see with blisters and they have medicine put on them and rewrapped and go back out playing. She wasn't even limping. Serena has been playing professional tennis since she was a young teenager and like Pam Shriver said that even if there is a little discomfort you still have to play. She's a professional and this isn't the first time she's had blisters before.

Serena has never been able to hit on the run. She loves hugging the baseline and controlling it from the middle. Serena loves the serves where she can hit cross court winners, but like Justine, Jelena did not give her that. Instead she did like Justine and mixed up her shots and forced Serena to have to run from side-to-side and she pushed her behind the baseline and forced Serena to miss her shots.

That's why I keep saying, the first week of a tournament is not about blowing the lower ranked opponents off of the court. It's just about gettting through and mentally preparing for the top players that you'll play during the second week. Serena exerted all that energy blowing her lesser opponents off the court, while Venus let her lesser opponents come out firing and hitting like their life depended on it. Then Venus just hit shots to force them to error and she won the match.

But when she faces Ana, and the other top players, it'll be a different story.

I've said from the beginning that I think it's gonna be a final between Venus and Maria, with Venus dusting Maria off and winning her first AO title.

Serena will be alright, she just should lose a few pounds and realize that she's gonna have to run from side-to-side and the top players are not just gonna hit shots to her forehand so she can hit the cross court winner and yell come on.

This is all in sports, you win some and you lose some. Jelena would be happy just to get one grand slam.

These girls are all good enough to beat pretty much each other at any time. It just depends on the moment they catch.

But this is, as I said hypothetical. What is Serena's best? When did she play her best last time? Six years ago? She's 6 years older and 20 lbs heavier now. I don't see any chance her playing again like that. What's the point of talking about it then?

I think the slower courts are wreaking havoc on the footwork of some players, similarly to the French Open. Not in the sense of loose ground beneath them. Slower courts (non-clay), they grip your feet.

Anybody thats a die hard tennis fan could see that Serena's game was below what we are use to seeing when she DOES win. Serena has won tournaments not playing her best but loose when she plays the at the level she played today. She's on the right track to gettin back to where she use to, she had an off day...shit it happens. I know she can beat Jankovic when she's on....she was off today..point blank.

No different kind of pressure.

Petrova crumbles when she loses the initial opportunity to close. A real test of character where you have to FIGHT to get another one asap.

I think Serena has problems with players that don't roll over and die immediately when she hits a good shot at them. Once they get most of her bombs back and make few errors and move Serena around, they have a good chance against her. Even Radwanska could have taken Serena. Nicole made too many UFs and played the critical points badly. Janko was cool and consistent, knowing what she needed to do to beat Serena.

My guess is that "Serena at her best can beat anyone" is now just an pathetic urban legend used as an excuse for those who are so arropgant they cannot accept her losing to more talented and hardworking(ie: LUCKIER) players.

I'll agree with you that Jelena has some issues with how to attack a match mentally when she's in the lead. However, unlike Nadia, the main reason she can let these leads get away from her so easily is her poor serving. I think she's more tough-as-nails mentally than people give her credit for (especially when she's DOWN in the scoreline). She just has to learn to be a better frontrunner. I'd venture to say that she really held on mentally today...she was one point away from 5-5 in the 2nd and a new match.
