She is number six, not seven as the AP is reporting today. But she has a great chance to move into the top five by the French Open.

TOP5 means nothing in Tennis. TOP4 is important term (b/c GS draws) and Venus have some chances to overtake Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova. If she overtake only one of TOP5 players that means nothing for Venus (#5 and #6 seeds at slam draws have same status).

Next most important date about ranking is RG draw (seeds).

Before Roland Garros (deffending points) :

1 HENIN 6680 (tier-II 3 titles and tier-I final and SF)
2 IVANOVIC 4126 (tier-I title and final)
3 KUZNETSOVA 3760 (3 tier-I finals, 1 tier-II final with 2 SF)
4 JANKOVIC 3700 (2 tier-I titles and 2 tier-II SF)
5 SHARAPOVA 3256 (nothing special)
6 V.WILLIAMS 2720 (tier-I SF and tier-III title)
7 CHAKVETADZE 2720 (tier-I and tier-II SF)
8 HANTUCHOVA 2677 (tier-I title and SF and tier-II SF)
9 BARTOLI 2133 (nothing special)
10 S.WILLIAMS 2022 (tier-I title)
11 DEMENTIEVA 1985 (tier-I SF and QF and tier-III title)
12 PETROVA 1912 (tier-II final and tier-I QF)
13 GOLOVIN 1852 (tier-II title and SF and tier-I 2QF)
14 SCHNYDER 1756 (tier-I SF and QF)
15 VAIDISOVA 1667 (nothing special)
...
18 MAURESMO 1453 (tier-II title, final and SF)
...
20 SZAVAY 1303 (nothing special)
...
44 DAVENPORT 605 (nothing)

POINTS:
tier-I: title (atleast 430), Final (atleast 300), SF (atleast 195), QF (atleast 110)
tier-II: title (atleast 275), Final (atleast 190), SF (atleast 125)

I use term "atleast" because points from tier-I Miami and Indian Wells or tier-II Dubai is not like for usual tier-I or tier-II tournaments.

Venus will be 5-6 seed at mandatory Miami and GS Roland Garros, so this time no chances to play against players like Sharapova or Jankovic in 3rd rounds like last season at Miami and RG. Even if she not reach TOP4 before Wimbledon i'm sure that she will be 3-4 seed at Wimbledon because that is only tournament which count not only official WTA ranking for seeds deccission and Venus like actual champion will be favorited.

My expectations about slam 2008 draws seeds:

RG 2008 SEEDS: 1-2 (Justine, Ana) , 3-4 (Maria, Jelena) , 5-8 (Sveta, Venus, Anna, Serena)
Wimbledon SEEDS: 1-2 (Justine, Ana) , 3-4 (Maria, Venus) , 5-8 (Serena, Jelena, Sveta, Nicole)
USO 2008 SEEDS: 1-2 (Justine, Maria) , 3-4 (Ana, Serena) , 5-8 (Jelena, Venus, Sveta, Nicole)

IF Ana stays #2 for RG, she will definitely not be afterwards.

Thats my opinion, but not what I want to see :(

Ana will prolly be #2 seed at roland garros... and will prolly continue the new traiditon of the #2 seed losing Early? another 3rd round exit? has the ranking been cursed?

Basically Venus or Sharapova will be the 4th seed going into Roland garros. Prolly Sharapova which is good IMO (that way Serena dn Venus wont meet till the semis at the earliest.... Serena needs to get her ranking up to at least top 8 by RG if thats even possible....

maybe its based on 2720.00 pts among 22 events

I think the first tiebreaker is who has most points from slams & Miami.

The first tiebreaker for the race, on the other hand is the higher number of tournaments played

When two (2) or more players have the same number of Ranking points, the tie for the ranking position will be decided
according to the following priorities:
a) The player with the most total points from Grand Slams, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Tier I Tournaments and the
Sony Ericsson Championships;
b) The player with the most total points from all Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Tournaments;
c) The player with the fewest number of tournaments in a 52-week period (including the Mandatory Tier I
Tournament, if the player qualified for acceptance);
d) The highest number of points from one (1) single Tournament, then, if needed, the second highest, and so on.
If all these items are the same, the Rank for any remaining players will be considered to be the same or tied for that
Ranking Position. Last Name followed by First Name will list the players who are tied in the Ranking Alphabetically. If
both the First and Last Names are the same, the players will be listed according to whichever one (1) is encountered
first during the ranking process.

For some reason i thought the system rewarded players who played more tournaments... (unrightfully so) cause last year i thought chak and sharapova were tied at one point... Maybe im wrong.... or was there a recent rule change?

In official WTA rank advantage have player which reach more points at majors.
