THE LOCATION
Grenoble (Arpitan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arpitan): Grasanòbol) is a city and commune (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commune_in_France) in south-east France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France), situated at the foot of the Alps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alps), at the confluence of the Drac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drac_River) into the Isère River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Is%C3%A8re_River). Located in the Rhône-Alpes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rh%C3%B4ne-Alpes) région (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9gion_in_France), Grenoble is the préfecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pr%C3%A9fecture) (capital) of the département (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A9partement_in_France) of Isère (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Is%C3%A8re). Population of the city (commune) of Grenoble at the 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999)census (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census) was 153,317 inhabitants (157,900 inhabitants as of February 2004 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004) estimates). Population of the whole metropolitan area (in French: aire urbaine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aire_urbaine)) at the 1999 census was 514,559 inhabitants.
Grenoble is surrounded by mountains: to the north the Chartreuse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartreuse_Mountains), to the west the Vercors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vercors_plateau), and to the east the Belledonne range (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belledonne_mountain_range). As such, it is often visited by the Tour de France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_de_France) and is often called the "capital of the Alps". The city is mainly built on the alluvial plain of the river Isere, at an altitude of around 214 meters. Mountain sports give to the city an important touristic interest: twenty ski stations surround the city (the nearest being Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Le_Sappey-en-Chartreuse&action=edit)), some 15 minutes drive away.
The city sits in a valley bottom, with serious issues of air quality due to the large number of cars, garbage burning plants, chemical plants and even nuclear test labs. Radiation detectors can be observed at regular intervals along the Drac river.

Wrexham (Welsh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_language): Wrecsam) is a large (former industrial) town, conurbation and principal area of Wales lying in north-eastern part of the country. It is situated between the first mountains of Wales and the lower Dee valley, close to the English border with Cheshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire). It is the main commercial, retail, educational and cultural centre in North Wales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Wales), and often termed 'The capital of North Wales'. In the 2001 census Wrexham had a population of 42,576, whereas the Wrexham urban area had a population of 63,084[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrexham#_note-0). It forms the centre of the wider Wrexham County Borough (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrexham_County_Borough), which covers 50,500 hectares and has a population of over 130,000. These figures make Wrexham by far the largest urban area in Wales away from the south coast.

Kaarst is a town in the district Rhein-Kreis Neuss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhein-Kreis_Neuss), North Rhine-Westphalia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Rhine-Westphalia), Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany)
Kaarst is located west of the city Neuss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuss) (5 km) and east of Mönchengladbach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B6nchengladbach) (12 km
Before 100 BC Celts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celts) lived in the area. Later the Franks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franks) came into this area as graves from the 7th century prove. The first written document is the Life of the first bishop of Münster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop_of_M%C3%BCnster). It describes how bishop Ludger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludger) walked from Budica (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Budica&action=edit) through the forest of Hamrithi (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hamrithi&action=edit). Budica is the former name of Büttgen which now is a village belonging to the town Kaarst. Kaarst was mentioned for the first time as 'Karlesforst' in the year 1218. Karl was a very common name for frankish nobles. The most famous of them was king Charlemagne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne) ('Karl der Große'). Lore says that Kaarst was founded by Charlemagne but this is not proven. Probably, Charlemagne used the forest of Hamarithi in order to hunt with his closest companions.
Kaarst and Büttgen had a prospering Christian life in the middle ages and they both have churches built in the 12th century. In the following centuries the area was influenced by the big wars and both villages were destroyed by Charles the Bold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_the_Bold) duke of Burgundy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgundy) (Karl der Kühne, 1474 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1474) - 1475 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1475)), in the 'Truchsässische Kriege' (1585 bis 1586) and in the Thirty Years' War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty_Years%27_War) (1618 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1618)-1648 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1648)).
