I think so. I would guess at least the SF. Although it really depends on the draw ceremony. But I guess that would be a possible final.

I have to say I'm glad Serena didn't draw Justine in the quarters again( I know I know it shouldn't matter ..) Also I didn't want to see Nicole nearby but Serena has the game to handle her. Also I saw Vika play the Brisbane final and she is a danger as well.
However first round first !!!

Serena has a good draw! Guaranteed to make the early rounds with rest before she takes out the big guns.

It looks like a Serena/Henin vs. Venus final to me so all Williams domination could begin again!

Possible route:
-Gajdosova
-Qualifier
-Azarenka
-Vaidisova
-Jankovic/Mauresmo
-Henin/Sharapova/Davenport
-Venus

Azarenka could be a tough match in the 3rd round then Vaidisova.
She's going to have to be on good form from the start. She can do it though! :)

those matches in the fall and those few hopman cup matches will do her wonders i feel...she's shed the pounds and is in great shape (coming from martina)...going into the US Open she had nothing to build on so her rust took a while to come off since she wasn't even able to pratice properly...this time she has had the practice and the match play so be ready for her to get the ball rolling from early :)

I highly doubt that Azarenka will be a match for Serena. As for Vaidisova, she's lacking consistancy to be a tough opponent for Serena.

Hate the way everyone assuming Henin is a massive favourite. She nearly lost to Kuznetsova today and we all know WS/SHarapova don't choke like a Sveta. Her form was amazing at the USO but since it hasn't been great but somehow she has gotten by winning titles and keeping her streak alive which is a testament to her.

Still I think a Serena-Henin matchup in OZ of all places doesn't make Henin outright favourite. By a slight margin, yes. I still expect Serena to win.

The first two matches should be fairly routine for Serena. The Azarenka/Vaidisova matches could both be tricky, but Serena can definately pull through. After that all matches are going to be tough, but I have no doubt that Serena can do it.

Can i just say Serena fans hve the best avatars!...there wasn't one that i didnt want to have!...anywayz
i dont think Justine should be considered a heavy favourite at the moment.
There are people that can beat her in the main draw!...
Sharapova
Venus
Kuzzie
Ana
Serena
Jelena
Two serbs questionable but both edging ever closer!

This is a great draw I think actually. Nicole is not consistant just look at the opportunities she wasted in Sydney, but I do believe she is tricky just because (Nicole) likes to play at AO (However, Serena likes it even more and has the results to prove it!). In fact, Serena's quarter is littered with either the up and coming (inexperienced) or the inconsistant. Well shall see just how "quick" the blue clay ends up playing.

In tennis we all know there are no guarantees, not even for Serena. Even still, the 16 players in her first week section aren't the players I worry about. Vaidisova does play Serena tough, but her movement and belief keep her from being the real threat to Serena that she has the potential to be. If Zvonereva is healthy, it wouldn't surprise me if she ended up being Serena's Rd.16 opponent instead. To be honest Vera always worries me just a little. But besides those two it should be business as usual.

Not including the 4 Qualifers who have yet to be placed, Serena is 14-1 against her first week opponents. That can be a little misleading though, cuz she's actually never played against more than half of them. I don't want to get over confident, but I love her first week opponents and I'm pleased with how the second week would unfold for her as well.

what she has going against her:
-She's never won an Australian Open title in an even year
-She's never defended any of her previous Australian Opens

what she's got in her favor:
-Vaidisova is her good luck charm, whenever she beats her she ends up making it to at least the finals (everytime).
-A decent looking draw
-She's sounding happier than she's sounded in a long time
-She's moving well
-She's Serena Williams

Her draw rocks! Venus is also amazing, and I laughed when I saw Masha was the unlucky one with Davenport R2 and Henin in the QF  her luck really turned around!

I really want Masha to beat Henin tho, but would love to see her points drop after a 2nd round knockout! So much possibilities!

I know!! I started thinking about that thumb injury,

I thought that too, but then figured it was to give Gadjdosova a different look cuz she was having no problems with Serena's power.

I am happy with the win I think Serena came out flat, even though she got a break quickly, and had to will herself into the match.

When Ree got upset about her movement I couldn't really blame her, cuz she was running flat footed.

Anyhoo, I love the way she closed out the match. In fact, my favorite point of the match was in the last game 0-0 for 0-15. Serena move Gajdosova side to side nicely and waited for her opportunity.

BuTtErFrEnA
Jan 14th, 2008, 03:03 AM
well she said she always gets 1st rd nerves since she's never lost 1st rd...her footwork was lacking and could just be because of the nerves cause it gradually got better in the second coming on to the end when she knew she had the match...

next rd should be better :)

Agreed. I think she was pretty solid though. She ended with 21 winners and like 15/16 errors so she was plus there. I think that she just wasn't expecting so much power for G, and the nerves.

Serena was soo focused, post match, she left her purse on the ESPN set after being interviewed by Chris and Darren.

Jan 16th, 2008, 05:24 AM
Serena played aggressively and took everything that Yuan was able to dish out. I like the fact that Serena didn't take any points for granted she played them all, which I think might have affected Serena's 1st serve %. It also was windy as all get out so that might have been a factor as well.

Can't ask for much more especially given that she ended the match +15 winner/ufes. Next up Azarenka match and that should be a lot of fun...

BuTtErFrEnA
Jan 16th, 2008, 09:49 AM
i missed this match...but it sounds like its the serena we all know and love...heard how windy it was today and that affects the serve so its still good that she picked up her ground game where her serve was lacking

youizahoe
Jan 16th, 2008, 09:55 AM
I think Serena played well yesterday... I don't think the wind was bothering her serve.. she was just getting agrevated with herself, which wasn't helping her serve...

Also she needs to deal with the fact, you either go forward on the court, or you stand on the same place... 90% on the balls she moved backwards on, she lost those points. She should also use more topspin and more length in her shots...

In overall it was a nice match and Serena made a strong showing..

I liked Serena's groundstrokes. Here's hoping she's got them back :D

Even though it was a good match Im going to be nit-picky and say that her second serve was upsetting me. Four doubles and she lost so many points on it, it was often slow, it used to be more of a weapon :( Still perhaps it was the wind to a certain extent and I don't think she tends to really go for her second serves unless she's playing a high calibre opponent.

Kabezya
Jan 16th, 2008, 01:33 PM
From the start Meng Yuan offered a challenge and Serena was fueled by it. One of the most beautiful if not instinctive aspect of Serena was on display yesterday. I love it when Serena sees a player who is unafraid and decides to raise her game up to that challenge.

Such an impressive match from Serena :worship: Such an vast improvement from the first round! Her movement was amazing and she really got behind the ball. She was fast and tracking down every ball. And she hit so many great angel shot and rill hit through the hard and through the court. Yan was a great opponent and got allot of balls back and really made Serena run and work to win the points.

More topspin? I think she was playing with a lot of topspin so much so that some of them were moonballs. I also think she had alot of length on her shots at least consistent basis. She was painting lines and the majority of her errors were long. I do agree with the backwards movement though.

They both had their share of nice groundies, but Serena won the war off the ground, on serve, and returning serve. It was a great effort for Serena all around.

Well done Serena! She is in such good form. Although I would like to take this opportunity to say how rubbish eurosport is with their tennis coverage. For the 2nd time they have only shown a few points in serena's matches 2 out of 3! Instead they decide to show Jankovic's matches because the cow goes 3 sets and then they will play a random ending to a mens match. Its very disorganised and all over the place. they should really have a interactive service because for fans to watch we have to get up at like 2/4am in england and only to wake up to the match not being broadcasted is not very fun. Im finished now lol But good job Serena. Next round will be tough as I think Vaidisova is playing 3rd best of the tournie.

Why being scared for Nicole... She just a powerful hitter, that's all. Serena kicked her ass last year while she wasn't in shape... Now she's in shape, super condition and playing solid. My predictions;

SW d. NV 64 64
SW d. NV 75 63

something like that :)

I could see Serena losing to Vaidisova and it's not a bad loss if she does. Serena at her best just crushes a player like Vaidisova. The Serve, the speed, and the immense power off the ground crushes player like Vaidisova. But when Serena is not at her best in these areas she can lose easily to these players....especially if she's not moving well or serving well. If she's not moving well she doesn't have enough time to set up and hit her big groundies and if she's not serving well :help:

This match gives me pause because:
1.) By all reports Vaidisova is playing amazing tennis, apparently some of her best ever
2.) Serena, while moving better than last year, is still a bit slow, and I think as a carryover from 2007 she still sometimes becomes passive and pushes the ball when she is a little tight or not confident.
3.)Most important Serena is apparently having shoulder problems which might affect her serve tomorrow. Maybe too many matches with singles and doubles is hurting her shoulder and might affect her serve in which case she will have huge problems. Link to the story about her shoulder.
No mattter what happens I saw good things from Serena in this tournament. Mainly she's moving a little faster, looks a little fitter and at times has gone back to hitting big shots. If she keeps improving on these thing she will be win more slams and be back to being a major force on the tour. Serena...win or lose.

I am nervous b/c I think this is the last hurdle she has to get over to get to the finals. I feel she'll beat Jankovic or Dellaqua, crush Justine or Maria in the semis (revenge or hate) and then she'll be in the finals. I just hope she wins and keeps serving well and playing at a consistent level.

Jan 19th, 2008, 04:41 AM
I think that article on the shoulder is a bit... meh, trying to create controversy... About her being unusually subdued, i think its possible that its cos she practically played back to back matches and the doubles did get kinda tense SHE RAN for pretty much everything which is THE MOST encouraging sign ive seen from her since.. I dunno when but if u saw her previous singles match against that Chinese lady, she was running and running as though she was trying to save match points, shes brought back that old never say die attitude that i remember seeing back in 02, and shes looking faster.

As someone pointed out shes still not "Serena williams" fast, shes fast compared to the majority of players but shes still not back to being at Venus' level which is a bit of a shame (I still dont like her physical trainer and this is why), but shes showing alot of muscular definition in the legs I think her improved movement and athletic endurance is from running on court. Foot work is a bit lazy at times but not sloppy like the USO, and Im almost Suprised (can i say this without being labelled a hater?) at how few shots go into the net or even go long.

Shes just getting SOO many balls back its incredible and shes really finding her angles which is something I had a prob with last year when she faced henin in particular she didnt seem to get those Deep balls in the corner followed by the short sharp angles, and the biggest difference is shes not only trying it, shes making it.

Having said that Im worried about Vaidisova, because for the first time Im not nervous before her match, this must be a bad sign!! lol I dunno why, just seeing her seeing how CONSISTENT she is I really think shes got a great chance, last year after the USO i didnt think she would be able to beat henin for the rest of the year and i thought it may take some time, but right now I feel like they are gonna have a match in the semis similar to the one serena had in 05, I just think her overall level is right up there.

I think what i like the most is that in the match against this chick she just beat she was working on a shot i havent seen for a while, the wrong footing inside out backhand (you know like an inside out forehand) she lost a few games because of it and because she was going for some more lower percentage shots to change the flight of the ball but at the end of the match it was a sparkling shot, its very very VERY deadly because nobody has that shot and its something I think will help her kill Nicole (I think nicole moves alot like Maria), my only worry right now is henin really and just looking at serena its hard to bet against her even though I reckon physically shes only 85-90% of what she was in 02 (Thats cos of her speed, and she used to be so muscular and tight).

I think venus fans should be worried though, venus hasnt improved at all from last year, shes still got those same weaknesses that have always plagued her, and her second serve seems to be weaker than ever, she will probably make the finals and should enjoy ivanovics pace but she still has that weakness to those who mix it up.

Dont wanna jump the gun but I think its possible that this could be an all williams final in singles and doubles (Hopefully!!! oh and im a bit worried about playing Janko in the quarters).

Exactly how I feel. At Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the USO, I was nervous about Serena for obvious reasons. But now, there is no reason to be scared. Serena may not win this, but she isn't losing to anyone who doesn't have the last name Williams. ;) Even so, I'd pick her over Vee.

Regarding her shoulder, this is what she said after the match:

Q. Served unbelievably well. Can you serve much better than that?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I definitely served well today. It was much better than what I did my other two rounds, so it's looking good. I like it.

Q. Can you bottle that, figure out why it happened?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I got some treatment in the locker room earlier on my shoulder. I kind of credit it to that (smiling).

It doesn't sound that serious if she can go out and serve 15 aces if her shoulder was bothering her prior to the match;)

the only improvement is the 1st serve percentage..but it was windy so i'll excuse her..i told yall i wasn't worried..."unfit, overweight" serena beat nicole in 2 last year in the heat, and still a 50-75% serena beat her in 2 sets in miami and moskva...serena at 75-90% will definitely beat her in straights...even if she gets her head together...from the moment there was any sort of rally serena wins cause nicki's movement just sucks..on to the QF and another step closer to a title defense and another step towards number one :)

Q. Can we have your thoughts on the match?
SERENA WILLIAMS: My thoughts? I felt like I didn't have a lot of rhythm out there. I felt like lazy, like I wasn't moving the way I wanted to. But overall, I think it boiled down to serves and returns.
Q. A lot of improvement to come?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Pardon?
Q. A lot of improvement to come?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I hope so, and I expect so. Indeed, indeed.
Q. What's it like playing her? You're never quite sure what you're going to get, right?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It's definitely interesting playing her. She's so unpredictable. I think that's really a good thing. Last couple of times I played her, her serve has just been really, really, really good.
Yeah, she's just, you know, really a bright future.
Q. The Police in concert next Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Get out of here. Really? Next Saturday? This Saturday coming up?
Q. Yeah.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Like after the finals?
Q. 7:30?
SERENA WILLIAMS: That could be fun. I love the Police. Isn't that -- that's Sting, right?
Q. Sting, Andy Sommers and Stuart Copeland.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Oh, oh, you know, I'm -- I don't go back that far. I just do know Sting was in the Police, and I know some of their songs. I would love to go.
Q. Do you know him personally?
SERENA WILLIAMS: No, I don't. I know one time he performed in Paris, and I missed that concert. It was Sting. Maybe I'll make it this time.
Q. A hundred bucks?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Hundred bucks?
Q. Yeah, to pay.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, I'm hoping for a celebrity I upgrade (laughter).
Q. How much of last night did you watch?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I didn't watch too much. I didn't watch Venus' match at all. I didn't see the end of Federer's match, either. I saw, like, up into 8 or 7-All, but not too much before that.
Q. You were in bed when Hewitt and Baghdatis?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I was in bed when Venus went out on the court.
Q. Do you agree with Venus' staff threatening to leave the tournament reportedly if her match didn't go ahead?
SERENA WILLIAMS: No. I definitely agree that you put 'reportedly' in there, because I'm 100 percent sure, and as I was there when the conversation was happening, that Venus never threatened to leave the tournament.
But nonetheless, I think it was -- you know, usually at night you have to go on as scheduled. She was first on and then the next match was next on. Sometimes you have really late nights. You always have to roll with the
punches, and not everything's going to be perfect. And if it was, then I would be in Hawaii right now, you know, with a glass of lemonade looking at my $20 million home.
Q. You can verify that for us, though, there was absolutely no threat from Venus to leave the tournament?
SERENA WILLIAMS: There was no threat. I don't know where these stories come from. But I find them quite hilarious. Yeah, I'm always looking for the next headline: 'Venus Threatens to Leave the Tournament.'
Honestly, it's so funny.
Q. Did you happen to be in that conversation last night?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I'm definitely not here to talk about or tell what happened in the conversation, because, you know, I was just walking by, and I was just being nosey. So, I definitely -- I'm not here -- you should ask Venus and Sania that, someone else, who else was a part of it.
Q. Do you think there's a chance you'll meet your sister here in the final here in Australia?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I mean, I definitely hope. I definitely hope to play two more matches before I get there. I'm just taking my next opponent, one match at a time.
Q. What do you have to improve from today to get to the final and win?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I just want to move better and just make a few less errors like I did. I think my second round I didn't make that many unforced errors, so I want to do that again.
Q. I know you have to play whoever you get in the draw, but is it a bit of a relief not to have to play Justine in the quarters again because it's a change of pace, basically?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I mean, yeah, sure. At the end of the day, I never really get upset at whoever I play because I'm totally fine. As long as I'm not playing Venus in the quarters, it doesn't matter to me. Eventually you're going to have to play everyone else. If Venus wasn't my sister, then I wouldn't care. Just because she's my sister, I prefer to play her in the later rounds.
Q. Who do you hope to meet in the quarterfinals?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Whoever wins.
Q. Do you feel a lot quicker on the court this year, or is it just our impression?
SERENA WILLIAMS: A bit quicker?
Q. Yeah.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I definitely feel like I can get every ball. I feel like I'm running almost like Santoro - not quite, though.
Q. He's 33.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, he's definitely moving way better than me, and I'm 23 (laughter).
Q. Your sister's opponent next is going to be a Polish player. What do you know about Polish tennis?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You know what, I don't know much about Polish tennis, but I know there's a few girls coming up. Venus said she's played her before, so, yeah.

I hate these effing reporters...

That result yesterday was never in doubt. Though like the rest of you said, Serena needs to work on that 1st serve %. I also agree with Serena that she needs to move better, she definately looked lazy out there.

Up next Janky, and this should be fun. Serena could quite possibly wipe Janky off the court with smart controlled aggressive return of serves that if aren't winners, puts her in a winning position.

I don't think her first serve needs to be better against sharapova or henin. She needs to cut those paceless shots and play more agressive and get towards the net...And cut down those unforced errors... Her 1st serve is by far the best in the tournament... 86% points won...

+ henin has a down moment lately during each set. Enough to seal the break and close the match... :)

+ after the quaterfinals she always picks up gear by 2 times, so she'll be in a good shape by the semis... the doubles will also do some miracles on her game :)

Yeh her serve is definatley great, she will need a high percentage of first serves in against Janko and especially in the semis I think Sharapova would be able to attack her second serve better than henin, look at how Vaidisova attacked her second serve. In any case Serena started off slowly in that first set, she comes out too slow in her matches and then when shes down a break point she finally Fires up.

Hopefully she will be fired up from the outset of her next 3 matches.

I don't know, I'm always nervous before/during a Serena match  I believe she'll win, but I never make any predictions on how easy or what the score will be. She's playing players who've earned their right to be where they are at the moment - Serena though I believe can and will rise to the occasion. She's gone through this tournament in such a way that while I'm nervous as a fan, I have confidence in her play and how she's using her emotion. I'm hoping for a good match and of course a victory for Serena.

Nerves come with the territory and no matter how good she's playing I alway have some tension. This time around it's the best it's ever been, I'm more relaxed. Maybe it's because she is and that's given me more confidence in her. In either case Jelena is one tough cookie, but I'm expecting another victory.

Good news for Serena. Win or lose, she's defended enough points to keep her ranked in the top ten no matter what happens (well if Radwanska won the whole thing she could bump Serena to 11 I believe- not sure). Serena's currently sitting at number 10 and Radwanska is the only player remaining in the draw below. Which means she's the only player that could bump her out- not sure it's even possible with a win though. So that's great news and takes some pressure off as far as I'm concerned.

Ouch that was a shame, for me I think serena was shocked at the 2-0 start thought the rest of the match would be easy, so she didnt try as hard. then Jankovic played amazing...Serena couldnt up her game intime. Dont know what happend at 5-3 first set I think it was the sunlight but it didnt seem to affect her as much as it did then later on so... I think she only really started playing when it was 5-3 second set but by then it was too late she just played terrible lol Her serve wasnt gettin the winners she wanted and her opponent was hitting hardly any UFE so that puts alot of pressure on Serena..... Overall Just very dissapointing. Her 4th straight grand slam QF so not good, also now she has a losing record against jankovic which is embarrassing. Venus just has to win now!

Well, she's still in the top ten so that's good news. Who knows, maybe her and Venus are swappin' majors this year. Venus wins Australian and Serena wins another Wimbledon- I could live with that.

And since misery loves company, another piece of good news is that either Justine or Maria will join Serena losing in the QFs. Not sure why, but that takes some of the sting out of the loss.

Keepin' hope alive... on to the next tournament.

I at least hope they win the doubles tournament ! And I would love to see Sharapova/Henin totally fire out Jankovic. I didn't like her attitude on court.

Plus the umpire should be suspended because he didn't let Serena play a let when the ball-boy came too early on court... (the point where Serena made a slice-lob on a smash of Jankovic, which fell out)... And also for his overruling on a ball he could not see, with his stupid shades on.

And Serena should challenge more. I was sitting right on the baseline, and I could see loads of Jankovic's balls fall out...

Her serve doesn't dissapear regularly which leads me to believe Serena was dealing with some kind of injury. They showed a glimpse of her practicing and she had a distressed look on her face and couldn't to move. After I saw that I knew this was going to be a long day. She really didn't want her opponent to know she was struggling but Jelena sensed it right away.

hmm.. i wanted to never post at WTAWorld again but :tape:

Overall I thought Serena looked good at this AO. I'm not sure what happened out there but she was like
this (||) close to demolishing Jankovic in straight sets. I know that sounds weird but if it wasn't for the fact that her serve was awful today she would have won in straights.

Anyhoo I would be really shocked if Jankovic doesn't get crushed in the semis...not saying it out of spite but she really is not playing that well. And Serena I think can take a lot of positive out of this. She serve really well (Minus her QF match), was moving a little quicker, was hitting the ball with more authority, power and depth, and her footwork was pretty good. (all of this is minus her QF match). Unless she plays like she did at thsi QF for the rest of the year I think she'll def blow it up on tour this year.

serena never got into the match...the only reason she was up a break in the 1st games was because jj came out shaky...after she realised serena was off in the next game she just rolled...it was RG all over again...hopefully she doesn't withdraw from the next tournies she's entered in because she will definitely need some more match play to get her ranking back firmly into the top 10 since there is nothing to defend until miami...

Although I am happy that JJ won, I was taken aback with Serena. This was not the Serena I expected to see play today. The commentators said she had an injury from this morning but I think it is also a personal issue. (My guess was that Serena may have been busy thinking about her sister (Yetunde) and couldn't focus.) The physical injury further hindered her performance.

I was surprised to find myself cheering Serena on against my favorite player. Every time the camera shot got her downcast face after an U.E., it broke my heart a little and I couldn't help but empathize with her.

I don't argue that, but she wasn't as energetic, not wanting to run a lot... Though at the practice this morning she was a bit slower, but not as much as during the match later on.. After today she'll stay 12th/11th/10th.

At least I'm happy she had a good level from the beginning... Now we need to hope she can turn that level into consistancy.

I don't know what it was either. I'm blaming it mainly on the sun and the toe. In the doubles match, she is serving quite well, not that hard, but effective. Her strokes are hard and precise. Though her volleys are crap right now !

I can only tell when I'm serving right in the sun, I'm not hitting the most powerful serves either, not many aces and a lot of second serves. While I can serve and hit aces like Roddick.

I really can't give any clear reason, guys she'll give it in an interview later, or we might never know :)

It's not a huge relationship, we occasionaly talk at the tournaments if we bump onto eachother. We e-mail. Serena even gave me tips how to get fit again after I had the same operation as her on my knee but on the right side.

But in general, if you see them practicing you can go talk with them, and if you see them frequently on tourneys, they will eventually give one of their contact e-mails... So it's not really that special, I just got lucky because of my dad :)

I doubt Venus can win it, and I hope that Means that she will, cos I didnt think she would win Wimbledon.

But anyways Venus has been most unimpressive this tournament getting broken so many times and if she beats Ivanovic And hopefully plays hantuchova she could beat Maria in the final (although after what happened today im not gonna look past the next match), But if she played henin she will likely lose, maybe she can beat jelena if jelena makes it cos she will be tired but venus is just plain weak against people who can get lots of shots back and mix it up, and the fact that shes been struggling with that serve is even less encouraging.

I had this strange sick feeling that Jankovic would be able make the final ever since I saw her win that first match after being match point down

This is what I hate, I guess this toe thing was a freak accident, but whenever serena starts to pick up steam she gets injured, Serena and Venus are (Especially serena), are way too "fragile" this injury crap is gettin old, They have to Stop telling everyone including themselves, that they are just injury prone and their bodies have taken a beating and the injuries over the years have left them vulnerable because thats NOT the reason, The reason is that pathetic physical Trainer of theirs.

Its just Like the girls rackets, they used those oversized rackets for years because they believed that all their errors were self made and they always said that they dont blame their equipment, but once they actually tried the smaller rackets They found that they were able to make fewer unforced errors than ever before!

Venus probably wont win, Ivanovic will be inspired by Jankovic and Venus couldnt hold serve to save her skin in that Doubles match. The game just seems to be slipping away from the girls, Yes at her best venus is practically unbeatable at wimbledon and is a favourite for the uso, and Serena is unbeatable (on pretty much any surface), but they dont seem to be able to even dominate the slams (At the very least) anymore.

Im probably speaking on emotion right now cos obviously venus isnt out yet but im just so frustrated that I know that Serena is able to beat any of these skinny B!tches and yet shes just not coming up with the results!! Dementieva, Kuznetsova, Jankovic, those people arent fit to shine her boots!!!

Watching Serena lose the way she did is always surreal. I'm not going to dwell on it like I usually do. It's a sad thing and I wish she had gotten through it. But she'll have to reflect, learn, change some things and move on because this is a long season. That motivation and desire has to be stronger than when the season started.

Consolation for me in that Justine lost. When Serena's out I push for Venus. I really hope she wins even if my belief in that win is shaky at best.

5. Venus Williams 2720
6. Anna Tchakvetadze 2720

I'm just curious how someone who has inside knowledge of everything wrong with Serena in Australia is on a tennis message board informing fans of her status? How do you manage? :tape: It has been stated numerous times from commentators that Serena was suffering from a quad injury and injured herself playing doubles. Serena even alluded to having injury problems during her press conference but refused to discuss them in detail because she didn't want to discredit Jelena. So who am I to believe? Some bloke on a message board who claims they know the Williams personally or credible tennis experts who are directly in close contact with all the top tennis players during the Open?

Get a grip buddy, like I said before: YOU NEED MORE PEOPLE.:wavey:

the ONLY positive I can take from this loss is at least she now has motivation to really go for it the rest of the year...last year she kind of went away after Australia

hopefully this year she'll be even more determined to win Wimbledon and the US Open (i'm not going to have any expectations going into the French...lol)

Serena should never lose to Jelena types. It's disheartening seeing Jelena in this semi and know that Serena lost to that. Wow. Next tournament Serena and back on track for sure.

It sucks that Jankovic will play out of her mind and then roll over for Sharapova. But all the girls do that a win over a Williams sister is bigger than a slam title.

yeah it would be nice to see Ana win but I don't think it's going to happen... Sharpy is in the zone.

Hope Serena recovers from her injury and wins her next tournament...it's been a while since we've seen her win a tournament.

Im more irritated at venus' loss, I used to be a hardcore williams fan and should probably change my nickname cos ever since her pathetic inexplicable loss to Jankovic at Wimbledon 06 when she was defending champ, I lost all faith in her. I always made excuses that Venus never fully recovered from the stomach injury or that Aus open 06 was just a fluke cos she hadnt played for a while or the 06 French was a just a mental cramp on her worst surface, but the truth is, Venus just plain SUCKS as a true player.

She had the physical potential to be the greatest ever, the most graceful mover in the game and someone who towered over opponents and had so much power could get back shots that all others could only dream about. But she only does well at wimbledon cos the surface is low and fast and the points are quick, she will never be like serena./

This is why richardd proclaimed serena would be better, serenas a fighter, shes focussed, she doesnt get messed up when her opponent gets back alot of balls (especially floaters which are a big weakness for venus), oh yeh and she has a second serve, venus' ive seen social players with a better second serve and her first serve is erratic she has to be in the zone and have a great serving day to hit good first serves, She let serena down by her pathetic display in the doubles, couldnt hold serve to save her damn life.

This brings me to my biggest probs with the sisters, theyve never worked to improve their games or correct their weaknesses. Venus' second serve is still the worst in the top 10, and her forehand is also she was meant to win this for her sis, but she is a victim to how her opponents play. She'll probably win wimbledon once more but other than that she wont do anything noteworthy in her career,

I hope serena doesnt fade off into obscurity like that.

First, Vee is and always will be an incredible player not some 'faded obscurity'

And Vee has the potential to win whatever she puts her mind too. Not 'JUST' Wimb, as if that would be any bad thing anyway... But if she does 'only' win one more Wimb title, its hardly a career to be ashamed of
