FROM TA

Australia’s Jelena Dokic has retired injured from her second round match with Italy’s Flavia Pennetta at the Moorilla Hobart International.
Down 0-5 in the first set, Dokic called for the trainer just 15 minutes into the match. Shortly after, she left the court with a sprained ankle.
After the match, Dokic revealed that she sprained her ankle on Sunday during her final qualifying match. Dokic played with the injury through her first round match against Germany’s Martina Muller, but during this evening’s match the injury claimed Jelena and her spot in the tournament. “I had a good run here and I felt like I was playing well, but against someone like her [Pennetta] you need to be able move so much more,” said Dokic after her retirement.
Dokic admitted that the injury had worsened during her first main draw match on Monday and had caused her some discomfort during practice on Tuesday morning.
When questioned about the setback the injury presented, Dokic didn’t seem too worried. “It’s not something that’s really serious, so hopefully it will settle down. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
Jelena revealed that it’s “maybe doubtful” that she will take her place in the Australian Open qualifying event at Melbourne Park this week, to which she has been given a wildcard into. “I’ll have to make a really hard decision on Thursday morning,” she said.

I'm leaning towards the fact that Jelena just really thought out a way to not get in trouble for tanking to get out of Hobart and play the qualies.

At least I definitely hope so.

Meanwhile, I'm gonna be asleep, so I won't see her draw till like tomorrow. Does play start on Thursday?

I want her to play doubles just in case she loses in qualifying or main draw
i would like her to play with Gajdosova-great big hitting team or former doubles partner Nadia petrova.
i hope she gets medium draw, easy players in all rounds.

Even if she is fine physically, there's certainly no guarantee that she'll qualify. Some of you guys are too quick to be writing in wins, this is the beginning of Jelena's comeback, she had a great week last week, but things won't be all rosy all the time. I'm certainly not saying she can't qualify, but we should be realistic at the same time.

Won't she have a ranking after the AO qualifying? I thought she played in March of this year...

Anyway, Erakovic is not the easiest player for Jelena, but I'm confident that she can win it. Erakovic had a great week in Auckland, at her home tournament. I'm hoping there are lots of Aussies at Jelena's match to give her the homecourt advantage! Goodness knows she is gonna need it. :)

I'm not saying she will qualify, but imagine if she does having one of the most difficult draws in the qualifying. A big confidence boost right there. Please make it happen, Jelena. :armed:

Dokic to contest Open qualifiers

January 09, 2008 FORMER world No.4 Jelena Dokic has accepted a wildcard into the Australian Open women's qualifying competition starting Thursday.

Dokic, 24, had been in doubt after retiring midway through her second round match against Italy's Flavia Pennetta at the Hobart International with a sprained ankle.

Dokic had been playing her fifth match in as many days after a long lay-off.

She will have to win three qualifying matches at Melbourne Park to advance to the main draw for only the second time since 2001."

If she found it hard going in Hobart she's going to find it a lot harder in Melbourne. Erakovic is a less than ideal draw for a 1st round.

Still if she wins 1 or 2 matches it'll help her get back to form and up the rankings.

Go Jelena

Jeez, she gets ripped off in these Australian Open draws!! She must have walked under many ladders and broken many mirrors to have luck like this! Anyway not to bother, bad draws are all part of a comeback and Jelena will just have to deal. I'd go out on a limb saying Dokic has the hardest draw of any qualifier. Rnd 1 - Erakovic (SF in Auckland last week, def. Zvonereva), and then should he win that match she could face Tanasugarn, a VERY handy player. But then again I could be saying that Erakovic could have been given the worst draw, facing Dokic in the 1st Round. In any case, good luck to Jelena and the rest of the Aussie contingent, male and female.

That just reminded me of something else :) HOW WELL DID THE BLOKES DO IN QUALIES TODAY! 6 out of 12 made it into Round 2. Hopefully the girlsm can do just as well!

Dokic looks forward to Australian Open
Thursday January 10, 6:34 PM

The worst years of her life are behind Jelena Dokic.

She only hopes the best years of her tennis career are not.

The 24-year-old Dokic made the first serious step toward a comeback to the top level of her game at Melbourne Park, scoring a straight sets victory in the first round of the Australian Open qualifying tournament.

Dokic beat New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-4 6-1 in a style that encouraged, more than thrilled, her.

For the former world No.4 who made the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2000 and then suffered a decline brought on largely by her domineering and unstable father, Thursday's success was proof that all the pain and suffering might be worth it.

The least of Dokic's troubles was the extra weight she had piled on while "sorting out her life" for the past two years.

She said she had lost 16kg since commencing training last October.

"I have, obviously, a couple more (kilos) to go," Dokic said.

"But I think I've done a good job."

Seemingly, she has done an even better job of getting herself emotionally fit.

During the upheaval that her father Damir orchestrated when his daughter should have been confirming herself as one of the world's best players, Dokic switched nationalities, endured serious humiliation and lost the will to play.

"I didn't think I'd ever play again," she said.

"I've been to hell and back.

"I had to sort through a lot of problems ... I had a lot of issues.

"They are private, people don't know about it."

The light was switched back on again about six months ago when Dokic was at home in Croatia.

She hadn't picked up a racquet in a couple of years, hadn't trained in seven months and hadn't wanted to.

"It just happened overnight," she said.

"I just thought to myself 'I'll give it a shot again'"

Dokic said the realisation that tennis was the thing she loved most in the world lifted a burden from her and gave her life new purpose.

"I was pretty out of it, I didn't have the will to play.

"Then something clicked and I realised that I really missed it."

As well as providing her with the chance to make the draw of a grand slam tournament, Thursday's win provided a good test for a troublesome ankle which had caused some controversy for Dokic.

She had been confronted earlier this week with the problem of being in the field in a tournament in Hobart and being given a wildcard entry into the Australian Open qualifying tournament.

Under the rules, she couldn't pull out of one tournament in order to enter a another.

Fortunately, the ankle injury bobbed up at just the right time and just the right level of seriousness to get her out of Hobart and into Melbourne.

Dokic took the precaution of taping it for Thursday's match and was pleased with the way it stood up.

"I'm still a bit cautious, but it was a lot better than I thought it would be," she said.

Apart from Dokic, every other Australian woman in the qualifying tournament became a first round casualty.

In the men's qualifier, the bid by Australia's Bernard Tomic to become the youngest entrant into the main draw of the Open came to a swift end.

Tomic, 15, went down in straight sets in the second round to the experienced US-based Indian Prakash Amritraj 6-3 6-2.

Thursday's defeat followed Tomic's stunning, opening round upset of Taiwan's Yeu-Tzuoo Wang.

Omg well done!

She should beat South and Tanasugarn compfortly i reckon :):):)

Let's hope Azz is right - apart from spelling :) - remember he predicted yesterday that only Dokic (of the women) would win a set....and he was (unfortunately) spot on...

PS - "here Kitty, c'mon Kitty, here Kitty..." :smoke:

PPS - having said that I DO think it's a real shame Erakovic (or Dokic) didn't draw someone useless like Ahshaaaaaaaaaa Rolllllll-over). Would have been nice to see Marina get a place in the AO - hopefully she will do alright in '08.

Well Jelena's & Tammy's H2H is Tied at 1-1.

2002 Tokyo [Princess Cup]
Hard (Outdoors), Quarterfinals
Jelena was ranked 4 & seeded 2, Tammy was ranked 28 & seeded 7.
Jelena won 6-3 6-1

2004 Beijing
Hard (Outdoors), 1st Round
Jelena was ranked 43 & seeded 8, Tammy was ranked 97 & unseeded.
Tammy won 6-3 6-0

their meeting at 2004 beijing was the time when jelena was suffering poor form & was nearing decline though. so hopefully this time round she can improve on the three games she won last time.

She's doing so good! 16kg :O Thats like an entire carton of 1.25L Coke!..or Coke Zero in Jelena's case by the sounds. Hopefully she can put up a good showing against Tamarine Tanasugarn!

You know how she got 22 points from Hobart (7 from qualifying, and 15 from winning the first round), how many points does she have now, and where would this place her in the rankings, should she have played enough to get one?

So thrilled!!! BOOYAH!!!

HilaryDuffFanboy - did Jelena look comfortable on the court? Like, could she move to the ball easily, and have anough time to get into position? I'm interested to know how her fitness is doing in particular. Becuase the mental side of things look very much under control..

Tanasugarn is the kind of player who could play well against Jelena cause she actually loves having the ball come at her flat with pace, but I still think Jelena's got a good shot to win if she can keep up this form.

AJDE JELENA!!!!! :armed: :D

She's up to 37 pts now which will get her to around #475

A win against Tammy and she'd be up to about #408

THE AUSTRALIAN

January 11 2008

JELENA DOKIC has described as "hell and back" the journey she has taken from the depths of depression, when she sat in her Croatian home less than a year ago unable to contemplate picking up a racquet, to her return to the professional tour.

Jelena Dokic during her match in Melbourne against Marina Erakovic from New Zealand, Thursday January 10, 2008. Picture: John Anthony
After pushing aside New Zealand's Marina Erakovic in the first round of qualifying for next week's Open, Dokic also revealed the extent of her physical transformation since first reporting for work at Melbourne Park less than three months ago.

When Dokic began training in October, having not set foot on a practice court for the previous seven months or played a WTA event for the previous two years, her weight had ballooned to 83kg, leaving her too embarrassed to shed her tracksuit pants.

When she walked off the court yesterday afternoon, having moved well throughout her straight-sets win over Erakovic despite temperatures topping 40C, she revealed her weight was down to 67kg; the result of an intense, disciplined regime of training, conditioning and diet.

"I think it is about 16kg now that I have lost - I have obviously a couple more to go," she said. "I started in the middle of October exactly, so it hasn't even been a full three months yet and I am very proud of my progress. If you told me a month ago that I would do as well as I did in Hobart and even win the first match here, I would have been pretty happy.

"Even mentally it is a different story. I have been very positive throughout the whole thing. I have tried to be a bit of a perfectionist and to get everything in order because that is what I need to do.

"I am really starting from scratch and there is no easy way to go through that. I have really worked hard on everything and really sacrificed a lot the last three months."

At 24, Dokic still has plenty of work to do if she is to regain the fitness and form that took her to the semi-finals of Wimbledon and, briefly, No4 in the world. She believes her ideal playing weight is 62kg.

More importantly, she needs her ranking to improve to the point where she can avoid the cut-throat qualifying draws, which she has had to negotiate in Hobart and Melbourne. Given the extent of the personal and professional crisis she has emerged from, Dokic believes the worst of it - and the worst years of her life - are behind her.

While she would not detail the issues she has spent two years confronting, she gave a rare insight into the dysfunctional private life of a troubled star.

"It is not like I just went on a holiday and wasn't here for two years," she said. "I had a lot of issues I had to sort through and, mentally, I had to just be able to play and be able to enjoy tennis.

"That is the thing I have missed the most and that is the thing that has suffered the most. I have really missed it, but I had to wait for the right frame of mind to play again.

"The kind of situation I was in the last two years, I am happy to be sitting here right now.

"It has been a long road. It has been a lot of hard work and a lot of nights that I haven't slept through. This is just something that needed to happen. I thought I would never pick up a racquet again."

Having rediscovered her joy for the sport, Dokic is happier now than perhaps any time since 1999, when she was a Sydney schoolgirl who stunned the tennis world by beating defending champion Martina Hingis in the first round at Wimbledon.

Her story since has become one of the most bizarre in world sport - shaped by conspiracy theories against the WTA, switching nationality from Australia to Serbia and back to Australia again, and culminating in absurd claims from her father Damir that she had been abducted by her boyfriend.

But after surviving the public disintegration of the relationship with her father, her painful decline through the tennis ranks and her self-imposed exile from the women's Tour, Dokic can again see tennis for what it used to be; a game she loves playing.

"I feel like, honestly, I have been through hell and back so this is just fun for me right now," she said. "If I win I am really happy, but if I lose, at the end of the day, it is just a tennis match.

"I haven't had a great life and a great couple of years so I am really just enjoying this. This is the thing that I will always love, no matter what happens in my life off the court. That is all I want to do right now."

She must have been pretty depressed the last few years, and who could blame her after going through all that stuff with her father (in public). So nice to see her doing well--I really hope she can keep on winning, get to the top ten (and stay there for a good while), have a blast, make some money, and enjoy the success she deserves!

Yeah TA should be completely ashamed! That Ferguson can get a wildcard over Dokic is completely ridiculous! I doubt she'll even make top 100!

I think the reason Dokic lost is tiredness, but also just that Tanasugarn is a trump player to Jelena. Her game just doesnt match up well with Tanasugarn. You can see that from her previous 2 losses/demolitions. Hopefully this doesn't put Jelena off, and i don't think it will judging by her attitude.

My heart goes out to you Jelena!

Well i'm sad that she lost, but she has done well in her comeback than what I would of expected from her. I mean the only way she is going to be at best again is time, its gonna take time for her to be back at full match fitness & concentration. We must be positive :)

The fairy tale is over for now - and it was a fairy tale. For Jelena to do as well as she has in only 2 months preparation has been amazing. To think only 12 or months ago she couldn't qualify for challenger events and now she's beaten a couple of top 100 players and last weeks semi finalist in Auckland is a great comeback by my standards. Keep it going Jelly :)
Don't knock Ferguson or TA's decision though. Jelena needs to show that this comeback goes beyond the Aussie summer.

You have made us all very proud of you...Congratulations on a great two weeks...but this is only the beginning!! I reckon that TA will look upon these results and her hard work even more favourably if she returns to the ITF circuit in Australia. There are 2 events on grass in Australia in February and another 2 in WA on hardcourts in March. Play these and get back in the top 350...then you can go to Europe and play some ITF events there too. If you keep up the impressive form and get into the top 250 by then, they will have no excuse not to grant you the Australian wildcard into Roland Garros!!

Jelena :o

That's such an awful score.

I think she'll ask to play in Pattaya as well. If we don't hear anything in the next week or two I'm going to be nervous that it's another 2006.

:scared: Please don't say that.

 :tears: It's a horrible loss, I'm not going to argue with that. But considering the amount of tennis she has played and the good week she had at Hobart, I think it's been a pretty good two weeks.

Don't like a few of the things she said after the loss but it's understandable, the most important thing now is that she continues to work hard and moves on with her comeback.

I do wish Jelena wouldn't have said some of those things, but honestly, I'm a bitch when I lose to, so I can't really blame her

Really, she's just saying what the rest of us are thinking. I have no doubt she'll play fed cup, should she be ranked high enough. I just read in one of the threads that the Mildura ITF tournie, played on grass, has been upgraded from 25k to 50k! I reckon that will be Jelenas best bet, post Australian Open. It starts on February 4.

If Jelena got the WC she would be in Jarmila's spot in the draw. She would have had to play Serena. That would have been very interesting and a few tears after i'd say.

I don't think it would be Gajdosova' wildcard that she would have gotten. I thought she should have had Ferguson's wildcard, in which case she would have played the qualifier Timea Bacsinszky. This would have been a very winnable match for Jelena, and is a match Ferguson will most probably lose, considering she lost to Bacsinsky 6-2 6-2 just last week in Sydney qualifying.

Thanks for the info. Good to know she's still working hard even after the loss.

hello everyone! i am a huge jelena fan...have been ever since her 1999 win over hingis at wimbledon. have been readind this board for about two years and figured it was finally time to start posting:)

I have been pulling for jelena over the past few years so its nice to hear that she really seems serious about coming back this year. Also, good news to hear that she is already back on the practice courts.

I wouldn't have thought there would be any courts free at Melbourne Park - maybe she can be hitting partner to some of the girls in the top 100 so that the whole fortnight isn't too much of a waste for her :D

Jelena not in the doubles draw. :( Not surprising.

I don't know what she has against doubles, it could help her.
