View Full Version : The 2008 Australian Open

Jan 7th, 2008, 10:14 AM
Anna should approach Melbourne the same way she came into Madrid last year.
Get a good week of practice, then try for every point.
I was hoping Anna would get 3 matches in Sydney, but it's over.
Anna can train up to the AO this week.

Jan 7th, 2008, 04:03 PM
it's bad that Anna lost hat first round match:awww:,but i think she can at least defend her 1/4 points.draw will be though but Anna still has some chances

Jan 7th, 2008, 08:21 PM
This was an important event for Anna last year. She backed up her win in Hobart.
This year it's also a big event for Anna. Because she has to start playing well. And a major is a place to play well

Jan 7th, 2008, 09:05 PM
My hope is that Anna can go very deep at the AO and won't suffer the same level of fatigue that she says caused her missed opportunities against Sharapova last year. Obviously a kind draw also helps but I don't see the early Sydney loss as a major setback.

Jan 8th, 2008, 12:17 PM
I have no idea what to expect...

Jan 8th, 2008, 01:11 PM
Srebotnik came back to beat Bammer. I think Anna played someone is who is having a good week.
I expect her to be more focused for her next match.

Fortunetly Kata is seeded.

Jan 8th, 2008, 04:24 PM
I'm hoping Anna draws a local WC in round 1.
That worked good in NYC

Jan 8th, 2008, 04:33 PM
As long as she doesn't draw Lindsay... :scared:

I hope not :tape:

Jan 10th, 2008, 06:01 PM
I hope it is a good draw as I really want to see Anna start the Slams off on a good note. It would be really nice to see another semi-final at least and this is a surface I feel that she can do really well on. Good Luck Anna!!!

Jan 10th, 2008, 07:13 PM
Only a few hours until the draw is made

Jan 10th, 2008, 09:45 PM
Let's all cross our fingers that it is a good one!

Jan 10th, 2008, 10:39 PM
Anna's in the bottom quarter of the draw with Sveta. Her first round opponent is Andrea Petkovic.

Jan 10th, 2008, 11:16 PM
Anna's quarter:

Anna Chakvetadze RUS (6) v Andrea Petkovic GER
Shuai Peng CHN v Qualifier
Akiko Morigami JPN v Michaella Krajicek NED
Meilen Tu USA v Maria Kirilenko RUS (27)

Lucie Safarova CZE (22) v Catalina Castano COL
Roberta Vinci ITA v Virginia Ruano Pascual ESP
Alize Cornet FRA v Clarisa Fernandez ARG
Vania King USA v Daniela Hantuchova SVK (9)

Nadia Petrova RUS (14) v Nicole Pratt AUS
Evgenia Linetskaya ISR v Anne Kremer LUX
Laura Granville USA v Yvonne Meusburger AUT
Ekaterina Makarova RUS v Agnes Szavay HUN (20)

Agnieszka Radwanska POL (29) v Olga Savchuk UKR
Martina Muller GER v Pauline Parmentier FRA
Olga Govortsova BLR v Tsvetana Pironkova BUL
Nathalie Dechy FRA v Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (2)

Jan 10th, 2008, 11:17 PM
The 2nd round is probably Peng, who could be tough.
But this draw looks good. 3rd round Kirilenko or Krijacek, then Hantuchiova or Lucie.
Anna should get back to quarters, and play Sveta again.

Jan 10th, 2008, 11:17 PM
This is an excellent draw for Anna, apart from maybe Krajicek in the vicinity early on.

Jan 10th, 2008, 11:25 PM
Anna has to play better than she did vs Srebotnik.
But this draw is certainly in her favor.
It's almost as good as you can ask for.

Maybe a good draw but beware, she still have to play the matches which won't be an easy thing at all ! She has to take match per match and maybe she can go far at the AO but she has to start winning some matches because she couldn't win a single match so far this season ( we are early in the season, I know ), If I good remember.... Just focuss Anna and play your game without being afraid and also having confidence in your abilities. Good luck Anna at the AO ;)

Jan 12th, 2008, 11:53 AM
Anna starts on Tuesday.

Anna plays doubles with Na Li

And they are drawn against Shuai Peng and Tiantian Sun. I wouldn't say Anna and Na are favourites in this match but I'm sure they'll give it their best shot.

And good luck Anna for later. British Eurosport probably won't show it because Novak's on Rod Laver at the same time.

Anna won. 0-0 ret.

Poor Andrea Petkovic injured herself in the first game.

Jan 14th, 2008, 11:33 PM
She fell and hurt her ankle or leg. So Anna plays Alisa or Peng

Jan 14th, 2008, 11:38 PM
It was unfortunate, I'm glad it wasn't Anna. Hopefully she wins in doubles and gets to play a little before draw gets tough.

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze advanced to the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday when Germany's Andrea Petkovic retired with a right knee injury in the first game of their match.
The 20-year-old Petkovic, ranked 92, suffered the injury when stretching for a forehand and after treatment, the tearful German told Chakvetadze she was unable to continue.
Russian Chakvetadze was a quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park last year.

Chakvetadze craves a big tournament try out after 1st round opponent retires

MELBOURNE, Australia - After a brutal home invasion last month interrupted her Australian Open preparations, sixth-seeded Anna Chakvetadze is still lacking a much-needed hit-out after her first round opponent retired in the opening game.
Chakvetadze and her parents were tied up by six masked assailants who broke into her home outside Moscow on Dec. 18, stealing money and goods worth more than US$300,000 and beating her father.
The 20-year-old player said she lost feeling in the fingers on her left hand for several days as a result of being bound around her wrists.
Her first match of this year's Open lasted just six points Tuesday before her opponent Andrea Petkovic retired with an injured right knee with the score at 0-0 and deuce.
"I think it's better to play some matches before a Grand Slam event," a disappointed Chakvetadze said. "I did play some exhibition (matches). I lost actually in the first round in Sydney, so it didn't happen."
Chakvetadze said she's trying to put last month's robbery out of her mind and concentrate on the Australian Open.
"I feel better, I feel OK and I'm thinking about tennis right now, trying not to think about these things that happened with me and my family," she said.
Chakvetadze is accompanied by her father Djambuli, while her mother and nine-year-old brother Roman remain in Moscow.
"Now we have everything," she said of the beefed up security at the family home. "We have a bodyguard in the house, we have an alarm. But before it happened we had just security on the gate."
Chakvetadze, in her fourth Australian Open, reached the quarter-finals here last year before losing to eventual runner-up Maria Sharapova.

Jan 15th, 2008, 03:47 PM
Petkovic ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament, which will probably mean surgery and at least 6 months rehab. I hope she gets better, that's a pretty serious injury. I also hope Anna's hand is feeling better. And I'm looking forward to a Chakvetadze Kirilenko matchup in a couple of rounds.

Jan 15th, 2008, 07:47 PM
Anna can get used to the court and practice her serves during doubles today.

Jan 16th, 2008, 02:02 AM
I guess it's a good thing Anna is playing doubles. She could used some match practice.

I watch a video of that first round match. I feel sorry for Anna's opponent, Andrea. She really look hurt. Anna was very nice at comforting her in the end.

Jan 16th, 2008, 09:05 PM
At the end of the doubles, match Anna and Shuai just stood at the net and chatted for a good couple of minutes

Was Anna asking Shuai for tactics against Alisa? Foot's Fingers is right. Alisa is where Anna was a few years ago. The key for Anna is to not be complacent in matches such as these. She needs to get a confidence boost in singles with an efficient, good quality win because either third round opponent will be a much trickier proposition.

Jan 16th, 2008, 09:56 PM

Jan 17th, 2008, 03:11 PM
Is there any chance that ES will show her match vs Makiri? As a fan of them both, who is totally not intrested in Serena/Venus/Justine matches (wich undoubtly WILL be on ES) , I cant miss that match

Jan 17th, 2008, 03:23 PM
I think the draw is excellent. Anna has beaten Masha 3 times, she knows her game.
She knows Hantuchova. If Sveta doesn't make the quarters, Anna should be in the SF.
If Sveta is there, Anna gets a rematch of her biggest match ever, to get to another slam SF.

Having said that, Masha is potentially a tough opponent and so is Dani. So Anna has to play well.

Jan 18th, 2008, 05:44 AM
Anna and Maria will be the first schedule match at Rod Laver.

Jan 19th, 2008, 12:44 AM
It was a well played first set. Maria is still playing well, Anna's level has dropped.
They're probably playing 3 sets

Jan 19th, 2008, 12:53 AM
We'll see if this is like Jankovic match at the YEC, and Anna can turn it on again. Anna broke to start the 3rd set.

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:04 AM
Maria broke back and then held. If Anna wants this match, she has to get much steadier. Too many ue's since the first set ended.

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:09 AM
Im not watching this match, but reading comments and it loks like a bloodbath :lol:Is there any chance that someone will upload it?

Anna held 22, Maria held. Anna serves 23.
Very tense match.

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:17 AM
Masha breaks :help:

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:17 AM
Anna didn't challenge an incorrect overrule at 23 40-40 and was broken.
She's not thinking and Maria serves 42

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:20 AM
Anna is 6 points from losing. She was up a break in the 3rd. A lot of ue's and not using hawkeye.
She's not mentally where she was last year.
Anna serves 25. It's almost over, and Anna isn't focused. She's been very sloppy these last 2 sets.

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:24 AM
it reminds me of her SF match at US Open last year. Complete meltdown once things weren't going her way.
She lost. Its official

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:36 AM
Oh my...was Anna ill?
She wasn't moving very well.
And so many unforced errors....really made it hard to watch.

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:38 AM
I can't begin to understand that performance from Anna. It was so tense in the first set between both players. Almost all points were ending on errors.

In the second set Anna just went away and at the end looked as though she was purposely tanking it so she could get a fresh start in the third.

And then in the final set Anna was so patchy. A run of aces followed by double faults and errors. What was going on in her head?

She needs to be careful to regroup. She has many points to defend this year and needs to consolidate her position, not fall into a lengthy slump.

Jan 19th, 2008, 01:47 AM
With Sveta out, this was a big loss. An even easier run to the SF than in NY.
It couldn't be easier. Masha, Dani, Aga or Nadia. That's your run to a slam semi.

Jan 19th, 2008, 02:17 AM
I'm not too surprise about this, I'm just disappointed at how Anna played. Maria was very steady though and in the end it was enough to win the match.

Nice tank in the second set for Anna. Did you guys see the point when she was already walking toward her chair because she thought Maria's return was in? And then to make sure that her second set misery ends in the next point, she just threw in a double fault. I don't know whether to laugh or get annoyed.

In the third set she seemed to have thrown out any thought of a game plan and just hit ball any way she wanted it.

Overall, I think it was her crappy attitude that made her lose the match. :o

She doesn't show enough fight these days. She needs to get it together because 2007 will be a lot to duplicate, and it would be very easy to fall out of the Top 10 with all the points coming off. She just wasn't there today after the first set. Didn't even seem to care about winning or losing, and her groundstrokes were :help:

That was a tough loss for Anna against Kirilenko especially after winning the first set in the tiebreak. I thought she would roll over Makiri in the second set but it didn't happen. This was an importnat match for Maria's career and I think it's fair to say she wanted the win more than Anna today.

two words: awful performance.... Maria woke up and improved her performance in the last two sets but technically we could say that "she lost the match"

So many Unforced Errors, Double Faults, impossible to win the Match of this form.

Absolutely I hate your rival that so vulgar tennis player and above she played dirtily in the setpoint of Anna for win the tie-break:o:o:o I am Anna and I do not give him the hand.

3rd Round is disappointing but, Anna:smooch:
You are too hard on Maria. She and Anna are friends and Anna wouldn't want you to hate Maria. Besides Anna won the first set. Then her game faltered and Maria played steadier and won the match. Anna will recover from this tough loss.

I agree with goldenlox, for me the first set is a good show, I explain the high amount of Unforced errors because both player have not the power to close some points and are fast on the court, so in medium-long rallies then the error is inevitable.

In second and third set Anna plays bad, it's me or she looks very tired in the last games? I hope this can explain a little this performance, Anna is not 100% at the moment, if not she has to work hard in the next weeks.

Anna played Sydney and Melbourne and only won one match. Against Alisa, who is outside the top 100.
This was not a good start to the season, and when I watch other young players like Nicole, Vika, Kirilenko, Paszek - they all look like they're improving.

Anna won't stay in the top 10 unless she plays much better than this.

sad very sad, i really didn't think she would have to leave AO so early:eek:this year she has some tricky points to defend like in Melbourne, Paris and Antwerpen so Anna really needs to dig deep

Anna was not in a mood for a win
This loss is understandable after all she has been through.
But I see no reason why this year could not be as successful as last year. (or more)

Does anybody know what's her next tournament?

The thing that most surprised me about the Chakvetadze/Kirilenko match was that Anna played bigger, more powerful and more error prone tennis than Maria did. Anna had alot more aces, winners and unforced errors than Masha did and I didn't expect that. The loss to Makiri has to hurt Anna alot. But she will recover and probably take revenge on Maria at some point this year.

I was also surprised that Anna failed to hold serve at 2-5 in the third set knowing that Maria would feel alot of pressure serving for the match at 5-3 in the third set. Who knows what would have happened if Makiri had to serve for the match with her history of blowing leads and failing to serve out matches.

Anna was obviously struggling mentally out there, a little teary at moments, but I'm also sure she'll rebound and start playing good tennis again. :) I was surprised to see her lose to Maria K, but wasn't surprised that she played more aggressive tennis than Maria. I fully expected Anna to hit more winners and errors. Anna's special skill is hitting close to the lines without much spin, off balls that aren't necessarily that easy, which allows her to attack or counterattack without possessing huge power. Anna is very good at "lining the ball up" accurately for an attacking shot, or several shots in a row. Maria by comparison has a nice normal solid (but pretty) game.

It's just that Anna normally makes more of her shots. With her power, she has to be consistent enough to string together maybe 3 or 4 well placed attacks. But I'm sure she'll be back. When she is on, her accuracy off the ground is among the best ever (as opposed to her 2nd serve- she needs to learn to topspin it a little, at the moment her first and second serve are pretty much the same, which is a bit dangerous).

I agree completely. While Maria played very well, Anna should have been able to beat her. She just looked like she was mentally and physically out of it at the end of the match. Not a good start to the season. It is understandable with recent events, but I hope she can recover from it and turn things around soon.

With so many up and coming players it is going to be a tough year for Anna to stay in the top 10. I have a feeling this could be the year that sees players like Mirza, Radwanska, Kirilenko, Vaidasova, Szvay, and a few others really challenging the current top 10 and edging closer or into the top 10 themselves. (sorry for any mis-spellings there - what ever happened to names like Hingis, Becker, Agassi, etc!)

Anna not a very good AO compared to last yr
