People still care about her?

I mean, she was a great player 8 years ago...but why waste your time now?

EDIT: I've changed my mind. If she can somehow pull off a Capriati style comeback I would love her forever. We need a player like Jelena back in mainstream tennis. It's just so boring nowadays.

I think Jelena can return to the Top 100, but it will take her time though.

If she win against Muller tommorow Jelena will reach 22 pts already from one single tournament - it's more points than she reach in last 24 months!

:music::aparty::armed:

She is in winning strike vs. TOP100 players this season 4 sets in the row (i hope will be 6 tommorow).

well, if she's going to do something, this is the year to do it. She's off to a great start...but the Australian Open will be telling.

I honestly believe she can. Every indication so far is she knows how much work she has to do and is prepared to do the hard yards without asking for any concessions.

well, if she's going to do something, this is the year to do it. She's off to a great start...but the Australian Open will be telling. It's too early to talking about her GS performances (IMO). She needs for start to back in TOP100, than TOP50 and only after that we will talking about her next step and goals.

If we agree that she is still not ready against slam seeds (WTA TOP35 players) very important for her will be AO draw (according to GS draws rules for unseeded player):
- 33% chances to play against some seed before R2.
- 100% she will play against seed or some seed-killer before R3.
- 100% she will play twice against some seed or seed-killer before R4.

So if she draws in first round some unseeded player and win i will be happy whatever happen in next round. With Hobart 2nd round and AO 2nd round she will reach more than 80pts (enough for TOP300 already after two tournaments) and with all "Dokic is back" media reports that will enough for her to reach more WC even out of Australia (if no real WC than Qualy-WC) and that is very important for her fast improvement.

I'll go out on a limb and say yes. She needs to stay healthy and motivated though, and that's still a question mark as far as I'm concerned. To this point she's done great and she's saying all the right things, but it's early. She needs to keep with it.

I believe in her. :)

Jan 6th, 2008, 10:01 AM
yeah you're right, it's still early to say. she's done brilliantly to qualify but it would be amazing if she topped it with at least one win in the main draw. i think then you could say that this time it's for real

She's played three matches and beat two top 100 players pretty handily already. I think that suggests that she's at least on their level, and we haven't given her much time to judge either. All signs are good.

Jan 6th, 2008, 10:29 AM
At least! I think Top-50 is possible too if she continues playing a lot. With a "full" schedule, it should not be a big problem.

if Dokic stays healthy and mentally positive she will get back to the higher levels of the game. Perhaps not to number 4 but there was a reason she got there and it's not like at 24 she's past the point where she can ever recapture it.

the rate at which she has progressed since coming back to Australia is extremely impressive in my opinion given where she was the past 2 years. I think a lot of her detractors on here have suddenly gotten a lot quieter this week and i believe Dokic will be top 50 by the year end - if not higher. If she puts some results on the board early Tennis Australia will really get behind and she'll get WC to Roland Garros (if she needs it) and other qualy wildcards early.

One of the reasons she reached #4 was her Jankovicesque schedule. Actually, it was Jelena who wrote the book that Jankovic copied, the book on flying halfway across the world week in and week out to participate in every event possible. I'll be interested to see if she'll schedule herself more wisely this time out -- I think she will, since she doesn't have a maniac doing her planning for her any more.

What's more interesting to me than what rank she can reach this year is how her game might progress. To see her paired up with a REAL tennis coach for practically the first time in her career is fantastic. Her old game won't get her back to today's top 10, but if she's coachable and can add to her game, that will be really fun to watch.

I absolutely feel Jelena can get back to the Top 100, getting to the Top 20 is another story. Getting there means consistently good, not great resutls and a tenacity that Jelena has not displayed since 2002. I love Jelena just like the rest of you all, but we need to see what she can accomplish without Australia's help getting into these events. The results after the Australian Open will tell all and will be crucial in Jelena Dokic's future in the WTA.

Her old game won't get her back to today's top 10

watching Dani play against Safina today or some of Bartoli's matches last year i have to say i'm not so sure even this is true.

i sometimes think a lot of people forget just how good Dokic was.

Fes is a very important tournament for Jelena's comeback. Its a very weak tournament with no one that is really unbeatable, except perhaps for Medina Garrigues, so Jelena needs to gain as many points as possible this week. It'd be terrific if she could reach R2 and enter the rankings in the top 400. That way she wouldn't really rely on WC's for these lower tiered events and could go directly into the qually draws. I'm so happy she's playing again :bounce:

Yep, too bad she lost in the first round, but I'm sure she was burnt out from the last 2 tourneys. I think she can get into the top 100 again, for sure, if she stays relatively injury free. Who knows how good she might have been if she hadn't had all that difficult family crap to deal with.

I think you just might be sport on. Top 200 this year. Top 100 next year. Won't be easy. There will still be some ups and down but eventually she just might get there.

Honestly I would be surprised if she got too much higher. But even getting to the top 100 would be a huge triumph consider the way her last few years have panned out.

Yes, I think Jelena can return to the top 50. She's won a lot of matches recently, which should build confidence. Jelena appears to be committed to tennis and doing the hard work required to get back that level. I wish her well.

well Strasbourg is the only wta event where she did not win atleast one match. she won matches at hobart, aus open, and fes....

i think she might have been fatigued after winning two consecutive events and also a little nervous, afterall it was a big difference to move from 25k to playing people at wta calibre...

i think finishing this year in the top 100-200 range will be a good accomplishment :)
