Venus' serve was just too much. There was little between the girls in the first. Venus broke in the 10th game. Venus went away with it in the second.

On to Melbourne! :D

well they are playing in the middle of winter out doors. So I'm guessing both just wanted to get it over with. I don't know about that last comment. I seem to remember hearing people going on and on and on about how much better Sharapova's serve was compared to Venus and Serena's. Anyhoo Venus has a better 1st while Sharapova has a better 2nd. The whole match was serving. Very boring to watch. Hardly any good rallies and lots of errors from both girls. Oh well, I'm glad Venus was feeling well enough to play (and win). In the first set she looked as if she was in pain and had to stretch her back out before serving.

Nice win for Venus, too bad Masha didn't win.
But to me it doesn't predict anything. The player who's going to be on fire in Sydney is the one most likely to win the AO. For that one have to wait and see and of course everyone is going to hope it's his or her favorite, just like I'm hoping Masha is going to be the one on FIRE and win this years AO.
Go Masha!

Never in doubt. Venus almost put it away at 5-2 in the second, but Sharapova unleashed a couple of great serves. I don't get how Sharapova ever beat Venus. I've said it before, Sharapova=Venus minus the great movement. There's nothing that Sharapova does better than Venus, except the 2nd serve.

It wasn't as poor a quality match as some have said, but not entertaining to watch because of the serving consistency. Anyway, both Williamses are looking like serious threats for the Aussie. I can't *wait* to see either play Henin.

I thought 4, if you count the Champaign..

1- The metal Trophy
2- The Crystal Trophy
3- The Champaign
4- The Golden Racket

Then she might have 4 more after the doubles...!!!

Maria was going for too much at times..
she was trying to run Venus around,
n over powering her...

Venus wasnt moving like she did in USO,
just a bit slower, cuz she doesnt have to really...
Sharapova just hit like 2 CLEAR winners..
Venus had Sharapova guessing
to where Venus will hit her forehand...

Not much rally.. lots of force errors,
Vees return was, in Serenas term,"lucky"
Sharapova was trying to do too much with Vees 2nd serve..
Vees 1st serve was like before, she was going for aces..

At the end...
both were Very very complimentary of each other...
something Elena and Sharapova dont have...

Vees dance made me smile..
she was freezing and dancing...!!

Peng/Wozniacki, watching live from the first game..
theres more rally...
seems like the match is gonna take long...
Peng is hitting great, flat and low...

Right......, u belong to the pathetic few who always search for excuses for their player's loses. I mean, the few that lack the courage to admit a loss without digging for lame excuses. Nothing new there. Had Pova won, all we would be hearing from her fans is how well Pova did this and how smart she did that ad nauseum. U're not fooling anyone here; not in the least!

Ummmm hardly! I'm not gonna stoop down to that level and create a bickering argument, but I'm entitled to my opinion and my opinion is Maria didn't play very well. Venus played better. That's why she won. If you watched the match you would have seen that Maria could barely keep a rally going and that her returns were distinctly average. So thanks for calling me pathetic, but I think I'll take that with a pinch of salt. Obviously, only you are the one who is allowed to voice what they think of the match(!)

I think people expected too much after one good week at YEC. Sharapova hasn't shown anything consistently to prove she's a top contender at AO.

I hope she plays well, but at the moment, I think her chances are not much better than those of Ivanovic, Jankovic, Davenport, etc.

Agreed. I still would put her above Ana, Jelena and Lindsay though. But Justine ( then a large gap ), Serena, and Venus are in a league of their own.

Venus bests Sharapova in finals in warmup for Aussie Open
Jan. 5, 2008
CBSSports.com wire reports

HONG KONG -- Venus Williams beat Russia's Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 Saturday to win the JB Group Classic exhibition in Hong Kong, a warmup for the upcoming Australian Open.

Both players holding serve comfortably in the early games, but the Russian faltered first. Serving at 4-5 in the first set, Sharapova sent a backhand into the net after a long rally and then missed another backhand to give the American a one-set lead.

World No. 5 Sharapova, a past winner at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, was erratic in the second set.

Down 2-3, she double faulted and missed a forehand to give the reigning Wimbledon champ the crucial break.

Sharapova did save two match points in her final service game, but Williams held to love to take the match, closing out the game with a forehand winner.

World No. 8 Williams, a six-time Grand Slam winner, complained Friday of an unspecified injury but appeared unaffected Saturday.

The eight-woman field at the JB Group Classic also featured Serbia's Ana Ivanovic, Russia's Elena Dementieva, China's Peng Shuai, Russia's Anna Chakvetadze, Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova and Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.

Williams, a six-time Grand Slam winner, complained Friday of an unspecified injury but appeared unaffected Saturday.

She said the nature of the injury still wasn't clear but she felt better after treatment. Williams also said she fell on her left wrist while practicing in Hong Kong but that the wrist felt 100 percent Saturday.

"I just had the opportunity to get my racket on the ball and play it deep. I guess I served well. I returned OK. So I guess it was about doing everything good," she said.

Sharapova said she took some chances because she was playing against an opponent that was playing well.

"When your opponent is serving big and serving consistently, you've really got to take your chances on opportunities, on second serves, which I did a poor job of," she said.

why Williams play better tennis when they play Sharapova particulary ,

Because both Williames have found and can find out the way to deal with Maria so their matches are short and the results are stunning. But Justine doesn't really know the way to deal with Maria ( as you can see from the YEC 2007, although she was the eventual winner the match lasted for more than 3 hours )

Anyway, that's my little comment on the match.

1. It's just an exhibition so the result didn't harm. Just take it as a warm-up for players as the quality of players are high ( 5 of the top 10 )

2. Maria tended not to catch up with Venus's serve. There were times that Venus kept on serving ace on the deuce court but Maria just kept standing at the right corner of the court.

3. Maria hit too many unforced errors and has to improve her serve in her preparation of AO. Players are nothing without a huge and accurate serve. She also needs to improve her accuracy of her groundstrokes.

4. Venus played good, consistent throughout her match and had no depressions.

5. Both girls did their job well for this exhibition event so the result is actually nothing.

For other girls

1. Ana Ivanovic
I guess her performance here sucked and didn't show her world class tennis and her ranking as No.4.
Even though this is just an expo, it's quite shameful to lose to lower-ranked players, esp. Peng.

2. Elena Dementieva
Her result is the same as last year, medium level. But her serve is really horrible.
Can't her find any coach teach her how to serve?

3. Caroline Wozniaki
She did her job well but stil a little rusty. She right now needs the luck to bring her to higher rankings, provided that her skills and game are both improving gradually.

4. Daniela Hantuchova
What the hell had happened on her? She played mildly against Anna Chakvetaze and then the other day she disappeared because of health issue. Her rallies also sucked, seemed like a World 100 quality.

5. Anna Chakvetaze
Her attitude was bad I think, she showed her emotion by her face. Whenever she played Maria, see her face. And she should show her passion in tennis. But I must say seeing her using drop shots to receive the second serves is funny since no one expects that strategy. She's been using this a lot of times not only in this expo but also other official tournaments.

6. Peng Shui
No comment at all since I didn't watch her play.

And I think this is the performance of the players:
Ana - 20% of the best
Maria - 50%
Anna - 40%
Venus - 40%
Daniela - 20%
Elena - 50%
Caroline - 70%
Peng - 80%

Your are so right about Sharapova not going to face Venus, Serena or Justine and maybe Jelena in the draw, at least not before the final. That's not luck. It has to do with Larry Scott and the rest of the tennis establishment making sure that their "IT" girl gets another free pass. As long as they continue to hype her as the "face of women's tennis," they will not stop giving her cupcake draws.

I am a fan of maria's and i kind of agree with a lot of what you say---I have no idea what the capacity, if any, for conspiracy in the draw.

I hope maria gets a tough draw in tha AO---I think it would make her raise her overall game to a higher level---I know many disagree---but i believe she is capable of doing that.

Yes..and Venus is 2-0 in slam matches

Sharapova lost and she's been overrated lately. Can he fans just accept this and stop making excuses/bringing up matches from 2004-2005? No.

What's been overrated about her lately? If I recall lately she's been battling injuries, and not to mention she was part of the best match of 07 with Henin at the year end championships. You won't hear any excuses from me, but it's an exhibition match lol. I want to see all the STUDS of the WTA battle it out in great matches. It makes for better tennis overall, and can only hope headliners like this make it deep into the grand slams.

Quit taking cheap shots though pal, it's weak. By the way bringing up matches from 2004-2005? You just said Venus is 2-0 in slam matches. Isn't that the past?

If I recall correctly, ranking points were up for grabs at 2007 AO, FO, WB & USO. What exactly was POVA's results there really?

 :tape: You forgot yec.

Im pretty sure both wanted to win exo or not. I dont get all the excuses. Its not as if she loss to a lesser player. There is no shame in losing to venus considering ability wise she has just a bit more than maria.

If that were true, Venus would not have only broken Maria once in each set. Maria was serving really well and if not for a few badly played pts in the games she was broken, it could have been a tighter match. What REALLY REALLY impressed me was Venus' serve. Homegirl was amazing on it.

From the highlights, it doesn't seem the match was boring. The crowd seem to be enjoying it. Maybe it just wasn't Maria's day, but I don't think she played as badly as first suggested.

Venus complimented Maria for reaching the finals and Maria said that

Venus must be one of the few who can arrive the day before the tournament and end up winning after a 20 hour flight.

Sharapova lost and she's been overrated lately. Can he fans just accept this and stop making excuses/bringing up matches from 2004-2005? No.

This was an exhibition match played outdoors in freezing conditions. There's no need to even make any excuses for a loss.

Venus has only ever beaten Sharapova on one court, and Sharapova has won everywhere else. There's no need to go back to 2004 and 2005 to find Sharapova winning against Venus, it happened just last year in a huge event.

everywhere else meaning...miami and zurich:confused:

lol...I think any player would take Venus' wins in the H2H over Sharapova's

Sorry but Venus has won the bigger matches in this H2H so far...

Just saw some vid and I am so impressed with how
Venus' form looks! I was loving the forehand and
serve the most!

I just feel that Venus is in such a good
place right now and if God willing she
stays healthy, this IMO could be her best
year on tour atleast since 00'-02'

Maria herself that she was taking this exhibition seriously.

"... I am going to take every single match seriously because it is like I said, my only preparation for the Australian Open," she said before her Singapore match".

Jan 5th, 2008, 09:22 PM
I don't know why people keep focusing on the fact that it was an expo game. I don't think anyone of the players flew all the way to Hong Kong just for match practice. Lets face it, that's a mighty far way to go for just that and the prize money. Any competitor worth his/her salt does not like to lose. I therefore don't buy this argument that it was an expo and the losing player doesn't take it serious, I am willing to bet that Maria wanted to wax Vee arse out there, it just didn't happen. I will agree that the pain of an expo lose is noithing like losing in a Slam but it still hurts.

did u expect her to say "im only going to play 40% of what I can." that would be arogant.
She is a clever woman and know what to say and how to say things.

Except for when she threw in 12 double faults in Miami, I guess.
Sharapova has still beaten Venus Williams every time they've ever played on a hard court in WTA matches.

Meh. I can just as easily argue the fact that Venus has beaten Maria in every Grand Slam match they've played. See how easy it is to manipulate and misconstrue things.

Maybe she was passive because its an exhibition?

Oh well, good job Venus, not trying to take away from her win or anything, I'm sure she was the better player today.

Way to get a loss out of the way, Maria...now train hard for the AO and win the whole thing.
