2008 will probably be the year when someone finally gets the number #1 from Steffi Graf in the Career Prize Money category. Navratilova almost did it a few years ago when she was playing all those doubles tournaments, but retired less than 300k behind. Hingis became also very close when she came back in 2006, but 2007 was not so good and she retired more than 1 milion behind. Then, Davenport was also very close in 2006, but she retired less than 200k behind. But she came back in the end of last year and is looking very promising to get the #1 spot. Henin, who is almost 3 milions behind is also a good bet, since she made more than 5 milions last year. The Williams Sisters could also do it. So the question is: who will have more prize money when 2008 ends? :wavey:

Here is the list so far (not including Auckland):

1. Steffi Graf $21,895,277
2. Lindsay Davenport 21,849,317
3. Martina Navratilova 21,626,089
4. Martina Hingis 20,130,657
5. Justine Henin 19,002,905
6. Venus Williams 18,173,781
7. Serena Williams 18,109,234

Davenport will hold the number 1 in prize money spot for some months, then Justine will overtake it from her, unfortunately...

i'd go with davenport up untill the YEC when most probably henin (or venus and serena) overtake her with the million check for the winner.

Davenport should be able to take over within the next few months. Then Henin will most likely take over from her.

Justine will probably get to #1 this year if she stays healthy.
Sharapova is over $10 million at age 20. If she has a long career she'll blow everyone away.

Lindsay will take the top spot by the end of the month, most likely. Justine is still the fav to end the year on top though :smoke:

Just imagine if they adjusted for inflation

Steffi would have $22million ALONE just off her slams.

despite equal prize money at the slams look what Federer made with 4, $5,886,879 while serena with the same 4 made 3.3,852,173
the men get paid so much more,

Lasy year Justine with 2 slams and a yec and 10 titles did not even get to 5 million. and she rarely lost before the QFs is at all. The point is the ATP pays a whol,e lot more in the non slam events than do the WTA

This is just more proof that tennis is not for the swift but for those who endure to the end especially when it comes to the Sisters. Not many people thought that they would make up so much ground in prize money at the end of the year. They play the least tennis but still on the verge of earning the most prize money.

It is surprising that Justine didn't make the $20 mill mark after winning so much in the past couple years. Come on Venus win the AO and go to the top!:D
