What a big win for her!! Congrats!! Was down 1-3, 2-4, and 5-6, but ended up forcing the tiebreak and winning!
VERY lucky netcord at 5-5 in the breaker that went Erakovic's way!

Too bad Vera. Match she should've won.

Terrible loss for Vera. Led in the third set and served for the match at 6-5 only to be broken at love.

Marina's quality of play never dipped as she fed off the crowd.

Deserved win.

Let me also say the line judges have been terrible at times this week. Many of them are hired as preppy yes-men and deserve their share of criticism. Vera wasn't very pleased with some calls in the third set and on 5-5 in the breaker she thought she hit an ace, as well as I.

Wow, that's what I call a run. Well done to Marina! :)

I can't believe people are complaining about the crowd. For all the events we see where the stands are only sprinkled with people, how can you be upset when there is a sellout crowd going crazy for their hometown player. The crowd in this match was a great thing, not a terrible thing.

Why are you comparing her with Guccione?

They have been brought up completely different

Marina is a kiwi who always showed alot of promising - most memorable when she was the under 14, under 16 and under 18 New Zealand title all in the same year.
Then she moved onto the junior tour, won a few junior grand slams
Now shes onto seniors, has won a few titles (including a 50k singles and 75k doubles) but saying that this would still be the biggest accomplishment of young career so far!

Some Highlights of the Match...

- 3-3 in the first set, BP Marina... Vera hits the line with a FH, but ball was called out (clearly wrong call)
- Vera had 4 BPs @ 36 62 42 in the third set, but couldnt convert.
- Vera got broken to love when serving for it
- Lucky netcord by Erakovic at 5-5 in the TB

Vera was really unlucky, all close calls against her. However, she is the only one to blame for this loss, not the crowd, the linejudges or whatever. She should have won that third set easily, but wasted all her chances. It was an awful match by Vera. :( :(

On to Hobart it goes.

On to Hobart it goes.

There was a number of highlights - there was a number of simply outstanding shots hit from both players.

There were a number of shots that Marina hit that were called out (but was pretty clearly in), although yes Vera does win on that unlucky department by probably 2 or 3 shots still. Even so, there was just under 200 points in this match...so it really came down to a battle of the brains. Marina once again lifted her game when she needed too, Vera couldn't match it and that was that.

Great win, Marina! Zvonereva is a terrific win. Pete Sampras once said that if everyone plays their absolute best, Michael Stich is the best of us all, and I sometimes feel that way about Zvonereva. But today, Marina just proved she's going to be there in the future. Slam winner? Probably not (in fact I really doubt it, but never say never!) but she's going to be top 50 someday, and it may be sooner than we thought.

I actually didn't realize she'd been such a stellar junior player, either, until this win.

I always bet on sure things and almost put 6000 Vcash on Vera since I've never heard of her opponent. I changed my mind and picked Lindsay instead :lol:Well I should've taken a page out of your book Sally. Guess it's back to the street corner with my $25 :o Thanks a lot Vera :o:o:o

Should she retire in 2004? 2005?
You may not be aware but Chakvetadze is not American. It was not her home crowd who would support her and yet your favorite lost in strait sets.

:rolls:

And where is Myskina now?

P.S.
I can't believe some here think I really want Vera to retire...

After the Aussie Open she doesnt have much to defend until very late in the year. Definately top 100 this year :woohoo:

Just pointing out: this match was pretty remarkable. After the Australian season, Zvonareva pulled herself together and now sits at #11 in the world, and Erakovic is all the way up to #49! In retrospect, this match wasn't a bad loss at all.
