Transcript - Tatiana Golovin (France)
30/12/2007

TATIANA GOLOVIN (France)

She charmed us twelve months ago and it’s terrific to have her back, once again your applause for Tatiana Golovin of France.

Well, a pretty good record you’ve got here; how are you feeling being back in Perth ?

(Golovin) Well first of all, hello everybody, it feels really great to be back. I had a great time last year so I thank Paul for letting me come back here and it’s really a pleasure to be back.

The pleasure is ours. You’ve had a terrific year and this is basically the new season start for you, how did you feel in your first match?

(Golovin) Sorry I didn’t answer the question, the first one you asked. No I think we both struggled a bit today. I just got here two days ago and it’s really tough to get a rhythm. But like I said, it’s the first match and we have two days to recover now so hopefully we’ll be ready for Jelena and Novak and then we’ll have another great match.

You’re at your career high for rankings and we always look to the next season, whether you can sustain that level of play because it was a terrific year for you. What type of preparation have you done because you needed a rest, you had a big year, but you’ve also got to prepare with the Australian Open not too far away.

(Golovin) Absolutely. We only have about a month to prepare, so I did two weeks on conditioning and then I practiced two week in Miami, my home. I think for me last year I got injured a little bit so I think it’s really important for me to recover well, practice hard and win some big matches.

And how’s the body feeling after tonight?

(Golovin) I think I little bit tired but, like I said, we have two days to recover and we’ll start off the new year fresh.

The mixed doubles is part of the fun here and a very important part of Hopman Cup; Arnaud Clement’s got a terrific doubles pedigree but he comes in late…

(Golovin) He told me he doesn’t like to play mixed. So I don’t know, he’s been winning doubles Grand Slams, but he says he doesn’t like to play mixed. So we’ll see how it goes.

You think that that might help, because he’s got a lot of good performances on the doubles court?

(Golovin) I hope so; he’s a great guy and a great player. We’re definitely going to have a lot of fun. Hopefully he’ll do well in the singles so we won’t have too much pressure on the mixed.

Well done tonight.

well, tati/clement just lost in the mixed doubles to serbia.

i already don't like the start to the year. it feels like a wasted tournament for tati with no tough singles match and now, not being able to get to the final. and we already know tati's not the best doubles player around. hope she can get a kind 1st round opponent in sydney and more match play for the AO.

please go to the gold coast/brisbane for 2009, tati!

I thought Tati played pretty well in the doubles for the most part. she served well to save a handful of break points in the first set. but poor Tati had a hard time returning Novak's serve.

Clement on the other hand I felt played like shit. He wasn't being aggressive enough, was hitting most of his shots to Novak, and I thought could have done better on his service games by placing his serve better. He should have been the strongest player on that doubles court and I felt like out of the 4 players he was the worse.

I don't understand then why he confirmed for HC when doesn't like to play mixed. If he said "no" Tati would have had no partner so she had been able to enter Gold Coast or Auckland instead of HC...

tati probably wouldn't play anywhere else after france committed to the tournament. france was one of the earlier commitments too.

and clement was probably the highest ranked player they could find. they would have just gone down the list of french players until someone could replace gael.

The worse thing is that Tati couldnt play against a top player in single.. As she said the HC is great because you can play many matches so you get better and better and you dont loose pts etc.. so too bad she couldn't play against Jelena before Sydney :(
Also if they played the final they would have had to play 2 more matches but I don't want Tati to kill herself (too soon) in the season..

i think its a good idea for Tati to play Hopman Cup as her first event of the year. she probably likes that its more relaxed and has sometime to find her form because she gets to play at least 3 singles matches. Tati also loves to play for France and I'm sure all the players like that its a mixed event. Even though the France/Serbia doubles match was the final point of the rubber, all 4 players looked to be enjoying themselves and smiling a lot. But Tati did seem sorta upset that they lost the match.

i found a nice article about Tati. heres the link:
http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21498,22994053-5005401,00.html?from=public_rss

FOUR years after bursting onto the tennis scene as a precocious teenager, France's Tatiana Golovin believes she can make the leap to become a top-10 player.
Golovin was just 15 when she made her grand slam debut at the 2004 Australian Open and stunned the tennis world by reaching the fourth round.

That performance, along with another fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon and a mixed doubles title at the French Open, saw her named tour newcomer of the year, but injuries have meant her emergence has been a little slower than many expected.

However, after her best year on tour in 2007, which included narrow losses in successive finals against world No.1 Justine Henin in October and a career-high ranking of 13, the Russian-born and Miami-based 19-year-old believes she is poised to make her mark.

Golovin also claimed her first two singles titles in 2007 and said she was full of confidence the new year ahead.

"I thought I was playing amazing and it was a shame I had to stop there and have to start all over again,'' said Golovin of her end of 2007 form.

"It's going to take time, but I definitely know what I can do.

"I know I can beat the top players, I have beaten them before, and I know I can play consistently for two or three weeks.

"Now it is just a matter of really focusing on the grand slams, staying healthy, and really believing in myself.''

Golovin has battled various injuries in the last couple of years and was frustratingly sidelined by ankle and respiratory problems at various times during 2007, while a knee injury prematurely ended her season.

However, she was confident those dramas were behind her.

"It was unfortunate that I had to stop for two and a half months in the middle of the year when I was playing so well on clay,'' she said.

"It takes a while to come back, but I was very happy with how I ended (the season) and it gave me something to look forward to.''

The glamorous Golovin looked in fine fettle as she opened the new season with an impressive straight sets win over Argentina's world No.38 Gisela Dulko at the Hopman Cup.

She heads into the new year with a new coach, Glen Schapp, who previously worked with Dinara Safina and Nadia Petrova and is known as a strict disciplinarian.

Golovin said the pair were working towards fine-tuning her all-round game.

"We started working together two weeks ago,'' she said.

"He's out there with me every day and making me work hard, he's very professional.

"We're working on coming in (to the net) and I hit a couple of volleys today.

"My doubles game is improving, we are working on a lot of things, just little touch ups.''

Golovin obviously values representing her country and has already marked the Beijing Olympics in her calendar.

"Olympics is like a dream come true, being able to participate,'' she said.

"My dad (Gregori) is a hockey player and he taught us how much the Olympics matter to an athlete and for a career.

"I missed out three years ago, so it is definitely going to be a priority.''

Golovin's win over Dulko helped France to a 2-1 in its opening Hopman Cup tie, raising hopes of the French finally winning the mixed teams event at the 15th attempt.

France's next tie is against top-seeded Serbia and Golovin will get a significant test of where her game is at when she faces world No.3 Jelena Jankovic in the singles.

as for the sydney draw, if tati plays jelena this will be a good opportunity for tati to get a win. can't imagine that jelena will be 100% and tati should be able to get more outright winners if jelena can't scramble all around the court.

At least, she pushed this match into three sets again. This is not as bad as I feared, she lacked two things to win this match : a reliable serve & a better conservion of key points. She has almost troubled Jankovic in every game to always miss the occasion. Frustrating loss but at least a fight.
Tatiana should be fine for Melbourne. Hope she will be in Kuznetsova's or Ivanovic's section.

JJ wouldn't have played if she was seriously injured, so I hope none will say she lost to an injured player..

Disappointing result for me to say the least. Where did the serve go?

Let's pretend that JJ is not injured. Tati still needs to start beating top 10 players regularly if she wants to become a top player. I guess I should have not expected much. Oh well.

yukon145

a bit disappointing, but at least Tati pushed it to 3 sets. and i agree that Jankovic wouldn't have played if she was really hurt badly. she may be a drama queen and over react but shes not stuipd to risk her body and season for this event.

rest up Tati and best of luck at the Aussie Open.

OMG! As I saw the result first I was really shocked :help:

JJ wasn't that injured as she showed it at Hopman Cup. But I think today it has been the best chance to beat JJ for the next months... What was with her serve today - sh has been broken 7 times... really too much to be successful at the AO

^ Agreed.

Im surprised at the serve though... It was just starting to come round. Every player has bad days, coupled with the pressure she probably felt considering Jankovic was meant to be 'Risking her career' last week... Im not surprised it wasn't an easy straight sets victory. The fact that Jankovic was able to play three whole sets shows how much she exaggerated her injury.

Im uspet for her but I still think she can live up to her seeding in AO, and with the right draw, go even further. :)

P.S I have a feeling she'll get someone like Szavay or Safarova in the third round.

Golovin ready to prove her credentials

Wed Jan 9, 2008 8:21am GMT

By Simon Cambers

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - When Tatiana Golovin burst on to the scene in 2004 with last-16 appearances at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, it seemed only a matter of time before she would be pushing for the sport's biggest titles.

But having made it to the top 30, her progress was slowed by a series of injuries and it looked like she might never fulfil her potential.

A breakthrough year in 2007 changed all that.

After capturing her first two titles to earn a career-high ranking of 13, Golovin is fully fit, full of confidence and ready for a good showing at next week's Australian Open.

"Obviously I think in a tennis career it's so important to be playing well in the grand slams," Golovin told Reuters in an interview. "Winning tournaments is great, but you get remembered for being out there in the grand slams, that's what we play for really.

"So I really want to focus on the grand-slam events this year because I have not done that well in them yet."

A quarter-final appearance at the 2006 U.S. Open remains her best grand-slam showing, but her accomplishments last year have lifted her confidence to the point where she says she is not afraid of playing anyone.

Under the guidance of a new coach, Dutchman Glen Schaap, Golovin, who turns 20 during the Australian Open, said she was learning to work harder off the court as well as on it.

"I think I've always practised hard but maybe now it's just more regular," she said.

"It's good that he's here to help push me.

'STAYING HEALTHY'

"It's just going to be a matter of going on the court every day and practising. That's kind of what I haven't been doing, as regularly, before. But I'm happy, I am surrounded by good people and I feel good out there. It's just a matter of staying healthy and playing."

Golovin worked with former men's world number one Mats Wilander in late 2007, with the relationship paying off quickly as the Frenchwoman added the WTA title in Slovenia to the one she won in Amelia Island, Florida, earlier in the year.

Wilander added some court craft to her natural power but the Swede did not want to travel too much, so Golovin teamed with Schaap, a renowned hard task master, who had previously coached Russians Nadia Petrova and Dinara Safina.

Schaap is also encouraging Golovin to be more aggressive.

"We're working on coming in to the net a bit more," Golovin said.

"Obviously, keeping my forehand and backhand strong, but also coming in to hit volleys. I hit a one-handed backhand volley now, I think the doubles helps with that."

After a promising start to the season at the Hopman Cup in Perth, where she was undefeated in three singles matches, Golovin believes she is ready to show off her new-found skills at Melbourne Park.

"I think the confidence is still there from last year and (my recent success) is about experience and maturity," she said.

"It's just getting used to serves and returns and just the heat of the ball, dealing with the stress when you get on the court. But hopefully I'll be able to improve every day and be ready."

that is a tough draw, but that's what the buzz was all about in this year's ao, 'toughest draw in history' or something like that.

Tatiana has to reach 4th round, she has a kind of tricky draw -compared to Safina's for example- but if she wants to prove she is top 10 material, she has to get through. I wish she had an easier opponent than the top seed, but it could be interesting all the more so as Justine, according to some posters, is beatable. Good luck Tati :).

Wow, when i saw this draw, that is not what i thought at all... I mean when has tati ever done well with a good draw? Lets take a look back....

07

AO - Had PEER!!!!11!!!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!!!!11, should have been a straight sets victory.. Got ahead of herself and Fucked it up.

Wimbledon - Played Hsieh and got taken to 8-6 in the thrid then lost to Paszek.. PASZEK??!! She's a good player but nowhere near tati's standard... had a chance to play dementieva who she had batterd in miami 06.

USO - Her name is Rolle, fat rolle. Enough said...

Her 06 USO Draw was bloody tough. I remember thinking wow when i saw it... If I remember rightly, she played:

Harkleroad (shes a touugh player when on), Radwanska, Petrova, Chakvetadze before losing to eventual champion Sharapova... That was maria's toughest match too.

I think she can do it... If she can start to play well, hopefully she can get better and better before the henin clash. However, one match at a time... Allez Tati!

Uhm actually her 06 USO draw was the easiest, and hence she managed to reach QF.

She had Ashley who was still struggling to win a match, Aga, who was still struggling to break the top 100, Petrova, who just came back from injury and did not win a match throughout the summer and Chaky, who got injured at Montreal and yet a top 10 player. And she did stretch Maria, however, Maria wasn't playing well. But I agree that her form during that 2 weeks were awesome.

I understand the loss against Paszek @ Wimbledon since she just came back from injury and her USO draw wasn't easy either but I feel that her loss against Rolle was actually a blessing in disguise because she knew she screwed up and she rededicated herself to train and the result showed.

Her choke against Peer was the worst loss ever last year for me.

And yeah, the Peer match was nasty.. But I believe in her and I think i will be taking a few days off to watch this (there's a virus going around in london right now so that's my excuse :p)

Anyway, I still think she could win. The Rolle match was definatly a blessing in diguise but i think she lost that because of her being too cocky and thinking it was gonna be an easy batterage. At least there's no chance of her thinking that here... Allez. :D

Tati said it was tough due to the wind, she is very happy to have won in those conditions, it's never easy to get through in a first round of a GS anyway. Cohen Aloro served very well in the last sets, so for Tati, everything is fine.
At least no repetition of the Rolle match. But this is not satisfying at all.

Yes there is. Go to the official Australian Open site (http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/index.html), click on scores and then click on Slamtracker where Tati`s match is listed. While i`m on the subject of her match against Rezai, i hope that she shows some improvement later on.

unfortunately i was right and saw the result coming. tati lost to rezai 3-6 6-3 3-6. i was actually happy tati got it to a 3rd set. i thought it might be a 2 set wipeout.

i don't know what it is with tati and grand slams. seems like with a day off, she can't figure out how to play. another issue is that tati still can't figure out how to play as the favorite even though she's been on tour for 4 years. it's probably gotten even worse now.

i love tati but i don't think she can advance any further. hopefully in the future she can defend her seeding at grand slams and maybe make some tier 1 or 2 semis and finals.

and i really hope tati can keep france in the world group against china. if not, the year is becoming a disaster.

Yeah no surprises today. Actually the only thing I didn't expect was Aravane to lose one set!
Tati's game is falling apart. No references at all, no confidence in herself. The good thing I noticed is that she improved at the net ... but it's pretty useless when you suck from the baseline!

Please Tati, change your schedule & play more tournaments. She will find her game & her sensations on the courts, not practicing & practicing.

Disgusted at Tati's pathetic performance at the third set. That was a blatant tank and she didn't even bother to try to save herself on the last game. Was there even one first serve in at all? And don't even mention about the lame BH. It didn't help that Aravane is such a Brainless Ball Basher and she was creaming the BH.

She just doesn't do well being a favorite on a Grand Slam. Add to being injured at least twice a season means that Tati will never be a top player. It's sad since player like Bartoli can at least reach a Grand Slam final.

Bitch needs to go back to bolliteri (no, im not calling ger a btch, figure of speech )

I just don't get it. The end of last season went so well and it looked like she was realising that the only way forward is to be aggresive. She played with so much heart then but now she just looks lost on court. I was listening to what Mats said and he's right... When she gets tense and anxious, the gameplan goes out the window. She was playing brainless defensive tennis. It's sad.. If she never realises her potential then it's really sad but she's gonna have to make a move soon... The good thing about FO is that she can play defensive tennis and still get away with it but before the clay season, i think she needs to just take a chance - Aim to play really aggresive tennis from the start. If it doesn't work then she can change it up a bit but just trying to be safe is not good enough. You don't get in the top 10 with stupid heartless tennis.

I still believe that she can make the top 20 but it's so frustrasting being a fan right now.

i'm just fed up with Tati's result in GS... it's the same story each year, she didn't improve her mental at all, that's just sad !!! This attitude during this match is just unacceptable for a girl who's claiming that she wants to be top10...

Last autumn she said "the most important thing is to win even when you're playing bad"... but sometimes you can try to play a bit better Tat  or just at least try to fight !! I'm sure that at the end of the 2nd set she told herself "anyway i'm gonna lose this match" tssss

yeah, it's just frustrating being a fan right now...

that's interesting. 1st, this is mats saying it and it seems that he wants to make news when he does commentary. and this is pro sports. i'm not sure how important love of the game is anymore. i think money, competition, and excitement are more important reasons why pros play sports.

but it might still be true. in interviews, i never got the feeling that tati regretted going to nick's or that she didn't enjoy her time there. and tati totally doesn't seem to be the type to make up stuff. she seems to be very open about her life too.

my feeling is mats is trying to make excuses on why their partnership didn't work or why he wasn't able to help her game.

Isn't Mats still working with Tati? He sounds very bitter but there might be some truth in it. I don't know. Tati just didn't seem like a player who strive for success to me. I just wish she would stop playing brainless tennis when things go wrong.

Injury again. Somehow, I'm not even surprised anymore. I sort of expected it.

Maybe we're expecting too much of her. Tati might never reach top 10 or win GS or whatever, but I still enjoy watching her despite sucking.

I don't think we expect too much of her. I think top 10 is very much within her capabilities - it is whether she wants to use her talent to practice enough and sort out her mental side which will decide how high she gets in my opinion.

I dno. I don't think Mats meant it in that way. I thought he meant that the only reason she plays is to win tournaments and matches and not for the fun of it. Maybe thats part of the problem. I mean she looks really happy when she's winning but when she's losing, she just implodes. Maybe she does need to enjoy it a bit more and that will help loosen her up a bit.

Injury sucks but it's true.. Not surprised one bit. In fact, im relieved it wasn't the ankle for once. :help:

I don't think we are at all. She has the ability to do so so i don't think we're expecting so much. Anyway, truthfully, we only started to believe this was perfectly possible after the indoor season. I really do believe she can still do it. I think it's either the case of her believing it too much or her not believing enough. I agree too. Even how much she sucked the otherday, i was still really excited tosee her back on court since that's the first match i've seen of her's all year.

I have a feeling this year is gonna be key to her future...:scared:
