View Full Version : Jarmila in January

OZTENNIS
Dec 5th, 2007, 07:37 PM
Jarmila Gajdosova (Australia's fifth highest ranked woman) has entered in the Australian Open Wildcard Playoff Event in Melbourne, commencing December 15. She will be the top seed and face some stern competition from Monique Adamczak, Sophie Ferguson and Jessica Moore, as well as former World No.4 Jelena Dokic. Apparently, Gajdosova has been training hard on Melbourne Park's new 'true blue' courts, hitting with top Aussie juniors and working with some Aussie coaches. Hopefully she can kick start her 2008 campaign with some great results at this tournament!!

GOOD LUCK :)

I hope Jarmila is able to experience a warm welcome at the AO and the other events she contests in January. I feel a little sorry for those Slovakians who supported Jarmila. I guess if they liked Jarmila for the player that she was then they would still support her, but it would be like Molik switching to Poland or something.

Konta is still not listed as British by the ITF and WTA...and she was supposed to be representing the UK straight after Wimbledon...maybe she is still going to represent Australia  who knows...

I think the main competition for this wildcard will be between Dokic and Gajdosova

In last week's Orange Bowl tournie, she was listed as AUS in the draw on Day One, then was changed to GBR.

I agree.

I personally find it much worse if now Aussies appear and start cheering for her out of nowhere despite possibly not even giving a shit about her, before she changed her nationality.

I only saw Jarka play for the first time at Wimbledon against Jankovic. I liked her technique and her aggressiveness...so I became a fan then, not just because she was becoming an Aussie ;)

It's ashame that she couldn't play in the playoff, would have been very interesting.

Hopefully she'll be ready for the summer...oh and BTW, she's going out with Samuel Groth now.

Yeah I never really noticed Jarmila until the whole Australian Citizen thing, that made me interested in seeing how she played. I remember watching a few of her games and really liking her, she has a great game to watch and seems like such a down to earth person. Since then I have been a fan, I always hoped she's become Australian because it is great for us and even though thats not the reason I support her now it is definitely easier to support someone when they are of the same nationality.

I first noticed Jarmila when she pushed Safarova to 3 sets on the Gold Coast (the year Safarova won it). But ever since Jarmila has become an Aussie I have grown to be more fond of her :)

I watched her play against Jankovic for the first time at the USO this year and your right she has nice groundies and could of won the 2nd set against Jelena if she didn't make a lot of errors :) So Jarka just needs to work on her consistency :)

Melbourne, 21 December 2007
Darren Saligari

Deciding to move is never easy. It's something most people will have to do at some point in their lives, and it is rarely without incident. There are so many things to consider – which location, what size house, proximity to public transport, schools, shops. The list goes on.
These are the types of questions that someone moving house will consider, but for Slovakian-born Jarmila Gajdosova it was a little more complicated. She has moved countries.
The 20 year old recently received the news that she'd been waiting over two years to hear – that she had been awarded resident status. ‘It's really exciting and I'm looking forward to seeing my name with the Australian flag next to it,' she said.
Jarmila is not the only person excited about her move. Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley is also happy. ‘She's a very good player. She has a big game, is a good athlete and she will be an asset for Australian tennis,' he said.
Jarmila is still awaiting Australian citizenship and for the ITF to make a ruling as to whether or not she can play Fed Cup for Australia but, for now, she is just happy to be able to officially call Australia home.
She has, however, been living here for the past four years, mostly in the beach-side suburb of Coogee in Sydney. She has recently moved herself to Melbourne to prepare for the Australian Open Series and, hopefully, Australian Open 2008.
When asked why she chose to move to Australia and continue her career as an Australian she answers without a moment's hesitation: ‘Why not? It's a beautiful country, great people, good food, nice weather and I think it's good for my tennis.
‘I know a lot of people here and my ex-coach is Australian [Simon Walsh] … and all my friends make me feel really good here. I enjoy the life here, it's a beautiful country.'
While Jarmila is happy in her (not so) new surrounds, the decision to leave her family and friends in Slovakia was not taken lightly. ‘It was hard, but the way my tennis life was going I was on the road for most of the time.
‘I was away from my parents for more than two years. The last time I saw them was last year for four days after two-and-a-half years. It's tough because I am far away but they understand and are happy for me … and as long as I'm happy and it helps my tennis they will support me.'
There was also the reaction of the Slovakian public to consider. ‘The fans were not happy about it, but they don't understand the circumstances behind it … so I can't be angry with them for taking it this way… I'm just glad that the people here took me the good way, they are supporting me and are giving me a helping hand to go forward.'
Jarmila doesn't have any family in Australia but she has made plenty of friends here and gets along well with the other Australian players.
This week she has had plenty of time to spend with other Australians at the Australian Open 2008 Wildcard Play-off. Not playing herself has meant she has been able to be courtside for boyfriend Sam Groth's matches. Unfortunately for Jarmila she was forced to pull out with a leg injury on the eve of her first round-robin match.
It's just the latest setback in what has been a frustrating year. Beginning the year ranked No.71 (she reached a career high of 64 in September 2006) she will finish it at No.142. A spate of injuries and a first-round loss to world No.3 Jelena Jankovic at the US Open being the chief perpetrators in Jarmila's slide.
Despite these interruptions, Jarmila is continuing her preparations – there's still the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts on the Gold Coast and then hopefully on to either Sydney for the Medibank International or Hobart for the Moorilla Hobart International.
This year she has been a member of the AIS, working mostly with Sandon Stolle. Over the past eight weeks the pair have been working on Jarmila's technique and improving the strength of her game from the baseline. Subtle changes designed to propel Jarmila into the top echelon of players.
Looking forward to next season, Jarmila hopes the next move she makes is back into the top 100.

article from herald sun:
''JARMILA GAJDOSOVA ENCOURAGING IN LOSS''

SLOVAKIAN import Jarmila Gajdosova last night gave a brief glimpse of how good she can be for Australian tennis before faltering to a 4-6 6-1 6-2 loss to defending Australian Women's Hardcourts champion Dinara Safina.
In her first tournament representing her new country on the WTA Tour, Gajdosova backed up her quietly assertive claims that she wants to play Fed Cup for Australian soon.
The 20-year-old, who has Australian residency and is awaiting citizenship, gave a beaming smile when she was accorded a round of "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" after winning her first set listed as an Australian in a WTA main-draw event.
Gajdosova, who was ranked as high as No. 64 before an injury-troubled 2007, brings to Australian tennis a forehand which can shape points, a strong serve and a willingness to play at the net.
She foiled two break points in her first service game and two more later in the first set, which she won after breaking an anxious Safina in the 11th game.
Gajdosova, who has been based in Sydney for part of the past four years, has had enough time in Australia to comprehend Australian Fed Cup captain David Taylor's public directive this week for her to "put some runs on the board".
Taylor said it was "only a formality" the Australian Institute of Sport squad player would be declared eligible for Australian Fed Cup selection as Slovakian tennis bosses had given her a clearance.
"She's not up there at the moment (for selection) because the other girls have played better tennis.
"She has a lot of work to do - she's a long-term project who will only get better and fitter," Taylor said.

"When she is eligible, I'll start thinking about it. She'll only get better."
Sydney wildcard Monique Adamczak's match against Russian Elena Vesnina was one of three outside-court matches delayed by rain.

I agree. Stands out from some of the other sourpusses.

Very smooth serve that seemed to go in most of the time. Let's hope Jarmila keeps smiling tomorrow.

I love it when the players show some positive emotion like smiling or complimenting their opponebts great shots. I doubt Sophie was smiling much today unfortunately.

The conditions were very bad with lots of interruptions because of the rain.
It was difficult to stay concentrate .
Let s hope Jarka will have a great AO:)

You never know how Craybas is going to play, sometimes I see her and her groundstrokes are like wow, she makes things look so easy. You'd think she was in the top 20. Either way I think this will be a learning curb for Jarmila.

myriam forever
Jan 6th, 2008, 08:47 AM
yes each match is a new opportunity to have more experience and Craybas had more than Jarka.
Without the difficult conditions Jarka would have certainly won .

Don't really know but I think it was in the woodwork for quite some time. TA seem to be in love with Jarka at the moment, all she has to do is smile and they will do anything for her IMO...

Don't know if I would have given her a wildcard yet, as she's only been an Aussie for 2 or 3 weeks...But then again, she is the highest non-direct Aussie and she deserves one over Moore, Adamczak, Wheeler and definitely Ferguson. It's just ashame Dokic had to miss out IMO

Jarmila has drawn Serena Williams in the first round of the AO. Obviously this will be a big challenge for her but hopefully such a big match - in front of her new home crowd :D - will be a big boost for her!

Unfortunately Jarka got beaten 6-3 6-3 today by Serena Williams. She has a good first serve and some great groundstrokes...should definitely be a top 100 player. But she needs to work on her fitness and movement as well as her second serve, which, like her groundstrokes, need more spin...

She is a good prospect for Australian tennis and I hope that she learnt a lot from this experience. It looks like she also had a great time which is awesome.

Her coach, Sandon Stolle, was in her box, along with Sam Groth...
Podme Jarka :bounce: :)

I heard the AIS control her schedule now and right now the focus is her fitness ...yes its a long period already since her last singles match ( 1st day at the AO )...the longer she is out without playing competitively the harder it can be to "regroup" and get back on track ,its a very fine line...I hope she can come back she is an incredible talent thats not in question but how well she is guided and directed is another question ?

OZTENNIS
Feb 13th, 2008, 09:22 PM
Well I would have thought that playing matches and travelling would be the priority to get back in the top 100, but I don't suppose it is a bad thing that she may be working on her fitness...

Where did you get that information from? Thanks and welcome to the board :)

Yes right now the fitness side of things for her should be number 1 and that is a very good thing she is focused on that and hopefully returns back at the level she knows.

But I also think she should have already been like that in January ready for Australian Open like she was in previous years , she was always very well prepared and in great shape physically ...but how I said before its the question of guidence and the right direction ? Thats why players have an off season at least 2 months in Nov/Dec if they use it right to seriously get ready and prepared for the new season ahead so they don,t have to now take so much important time out during the tournaments.

Number 1 is if Jarka is healthy free of injurys , in great shape and moving well and thats so important for her game and gives her a good chance to really do well and get back on the right track and get back.

Merry X-mas!
Wednesday, 16 December 2009 10:54

I hope all of you are having the chance to enjoy this special time of the year! I am particularly happy this time around, because I am finally getting back to being 100% healthy again. I am not quite there yet, but my recovery is going so well that the doctors have allowed me to increase my workload and to gradually ease myself back into my regular training routine.

So these days, I am back doing quite a bit of running and I also play for about 45 minutes each day. It’s a great feeling to be able to do what I love again and – barring a set back – I think I can be back in time to play the qualies in Brisbane. That’s certainly my goal and I am really looking forward to the entire series of tournaments leading up to the Australian Open. It will be great to come back from injury at home and in front of the Australian tennis fans!

An incredibly great Christmas to all of you – I hope everyone gets lots of presents!
;-)

Love, Jarka

Wont be expecting a lot from her at Brisbane, a few wins would be a bonus IMO, same with the second week, hopefully by ao, she will be firing!!

A Happy Start
Tuesday, 05 January 2010 12:01

A belated happy new year to all of you! I wish everyone much success, love and happiness!

Personally, I’ve enjoyed a very good three weeks since my last blog. After wrapping up my off-season just prior to Christmas, Sam and I used the holidays for a brief getaway to the Whitsunday Islands, which turned out to be amazing. It was great to relax and mentally recharge for a couple of days before embarking on a long, new season.

We were back on the mainland by the 26th, and went straight to Brisbane to prepare for the Brisbane International. It was great to come back at one of my favourite tournaments on the entire tour, and I was very happy with the way my foot responded in the two matches I got to play. Needless to say that I would have liked to win one or two more matches but all things considered, it was a good first week back for me in Brisbane.

Right now, I am in Melbourne getting ready for my next couple of tournaments. Understandably, my body was a little sore after “being” in action for the first time in four months, but I am feeling pretty good right now and will leave for Sydney this afternoon. I will again be trying to play my way into the main draw through the qualies there, so keep your fingers crossed ;-)

All the best!
Jarka
