Tatiana Golovin! I think that she got what it takes to break into the top five in 2008 after her two very close encounter with Justine Henin at both Stuttgart(in which she made Justine drop her first set {6:2} since Wimbledon)and Zurich which she lost 6:4 6:4 cause she couldn't capitalize on her 4:1 lead in the second set. Beyond that i think she can comfortably make it to the top five by the end of 2008:bounce:

Golovin, Vaidisova, Hingis, Mauresmo and Szavay :)

I am still optimistic that Hingis would return to the tour, she is INNOCENT! ;)

Let me see.

If all of them plays a decent schedule ( enough tournament) I would see these players in top 5.

Justine
Maria
Serena- She needs to play more tournament.
Lindsay- She can only go up
Svetlana

Jelena- out- she has too many points to defend
Ivanovic- Out of top 5 too, too many points to defend.
Venus- out of top 5 -She needs to win even not in Grandslams.

Golovin, Szavay & Vaidisova have the best chance to (re)enter top10, but I doubt they will break top5. Venus- out of top 5 -She needs to win even not in Grandslams. She's never been to top5 recently.

Venus and Szavay

SF

Edit: I would be remiss if I failed to mention that I think Davenport can crack the top five. She's not in the top 20, but I think she has a shot.

I'd love to see Tatiana breaking top 5, but i don't see it happening. But I think top 10 is very possible.

I think that from top 20 players only Williams sisters and maybe Mauresmo (if she's back to form) have the ability to return to top 5. And maybe Chakvetadze because she doesn't need much to do so.

Of course out of top 20 Lindsay has a shot but it will depend on her schedule and draws especially early in the season.

I think Mauresmo will be back to the top 5 in 2008 and Nicole Vaidisova will join her.
I hope Shahar and Golovin will break into the top 10 in 2008.

I myself think Nicole has the game to do that, just she has to improve her mentality. There will possibly many chances next year, let's wait and see.

I seriously doubt that Golovin will ever be a top 5 player.
she doesn't have that much weapons and she is always injured. It will be hard for her to even make the top 10.

I definitely think Venus and Serena SHOULD be and hopefully will be!

I guess my ideal top 5 would be Henin, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Venus and Serena ( not in that order tho :D)

Nicole, Venus, Davenport, Serena, and Amelie beyond that I dont see too many people breaking the TOP5 .... getting into the top 5 is no easy feat and you have to be consistent the entire year (or have everyone be injuried and you play alot) ... but honestly I dont expect too see too many changes at the top.

Szavay, Golovin, and Vaidisova all Top 10. Also watch out for Cornet and Pasczek next year, they could be Top 20 year-end.

I think in 2008, we'll see the switch from the 25ish year olds to the 20ish year olds really take place.

I don't see Bartoli or Hantuchova finishing top 10 next season. I don't see Jankovic finishing top 5.

It's impossible to tell at the moment where the Williams will finish.

Ultimately, I think Henin will end as #1, Kuznetsova as #2, Ivanovic as #3, Sharapova as #4, Venus as #5, Serena, Jankovic, and Chakvetzde rounding out the top 10 (as far as remaining members go)

SO the two spots I see switching hands are Golovin and Szavay. Both need to stay healthy; Tati hasn't had a full season in ages, which is sad because her game works so well on clay and grass, which she's missed out on the past two years. Agnes' back worries me, but I'm excited to see her at work come clay season. Both have a lot of room to add to their rankings in a lot of places, and not too many serious points to defend until later this year.

I don't see Dementieva or Vaidisova really changing much from this year; they'll both play more, but I don't expect them to win more. Peer, Mauresmo, and Zvonereva can all rise. Petrova and Schnyder aren't going to move up significantly ever again. Safina is the tricky one. She's got tons of game, but is even more psychotic than her brother. Davenport will crack the top 20, maybe even the top 10, but not the top 5.

That's my prediction.

Derek.

Nicole Vaidisova.

When healthy this year, she was basically at least playing top 8 tennis, and towards the end of the season improvements started to show and if she keeps improving and stays healthy, top five is very possible.

In Juniors, she was the best claycourter of her age group by a wide margin. She hasn't played the big clay events on the WTA circuit yet, not a full season of them, and not healthily. She's got a big chance to add substantially to her points total in the Spring and early Summer. And the fact that she has succeeded as she has on hardcourts, with a game that seems immune to pressure and strokes that don't easily breakdown (serve, backhand both very good, forehand a little wonky, apparently a clay court holdover of a backswing, but not Venus wonky). She's got a lot of game. She's got that back thing, though, so I worry she'll miss part of the season.

Tatiana Golovin will never break into top 5 if she suffers injury twice every season.

i totally agree she barley won bejing and only got to the quarter final of the U.S. Open because the bottom of the draw sucked. Every knows that the top half of the draw was extremely top heavy.

Absolutely Golovin.

Expect Mauresmo to regain top 10 for sure. Decisive measure of top five is slams.

However, I don't expect many of the current top 10 to lose much ground.

She also won in Palermo, and if injury didn't occour would have beat Kuznetsova in New Haven(Tier II).Other than these results experts say she will be a Top player(10,5,1-who knows?).

If Golovin can continue her form of late season where she won Portoroz and came runner up in Stuttgart and Zurich, then she has a really good chance.

As much as I like Szavay, you cant assume she will be top 5 next year. She took a big step this year, but results like New Haven, USO, and Beijing will now have to happen on a weekly like basis if she wants to be top 5. I think she is capable of it, but I can only see her getting as high as 8ish next season. We have to wait and see if she just had 4 good weeks of tennis, or if this is something that can last long term. Hopefully it will last.
