I'll be watching Qualifying / practice over the opening weekend of Birmingham. Fortunately I've been lucky with the weather that weekend for the last few years.
Stefi62, if it's got to be one or the other, I'd say go for Eastbourne, the viewing on the outside courts is far better.

Im mostly sure its free! because I was going to go to watch qualifying but didnt end up going but I watched the saturday last 16 and quaters I Was goin on the sunday qualifying to find out where it was but we didnt end up going but yes Im pretty sure there free!

Just booked my hotel this morning. I'm staying in the city centre this year (there's lots of buses, even on Sunday), but for hotels within walking distance of the tennis, there's quite a few good value places on Hagley Road.

No, I'm staying in the Thistle hotel near Birmingham Snow Hill station. Had a discount voucher, so thought I'd stay somewhere a bit more expensive. Quite convenient for Broad street too. That pub you refer too is the Wetherlodge on Bennetts Hill, which I did consider, but the problem is with them is they don't have proper online booking system.

i stayed in teh comfort inn when i went. dirt cheap, but there was a reason why, lol.

Last year was the Crepe van open during qualies? I'm sure on the first day it was there, but closed, can't remember about the sunday. Those pancakes are expensive anyway for what they are!

its alot easier to get the bus from city center, 61, 62, 63 goes along Bristol Rd (A38)
get off just after lights, there's a stop just 20m after Sir Harry's Rd.

No, I'll live in Birmingham at that time. I'll have my own flat, I haven't seen on a map where the club was compared to where I'll live, but my roomate told me it was just 5 miles away of the flat...I'll go there for the qualifications, and maybe for SF/F if it's not too expensive...

£1.50 for a single on Travel west midlands since sometime late last year. luckily enough the train line from my house goes straight through to 5 ways, so i have always got off there and walked, but last year i got a bus from the city centre instead and trust me, its so much easier :p i wouldnt even bother with the 5ways walk now :p

Depending on work i will go and buy on the day like always, might go to the qualifying if the weather is good and it is free.

As for parking, could always park up at the university and walk back down the bristol rd to sir harrys road, but i think its quite a walk.

There doesn't appear to be any direct bus for Hockley to Egdbaston, so the Daysaver ticket(Only accepted on Travel West Midlands buses not private companies like Midland Rider that sometimes run buses on the same routes) would be cheapest.
There are also a number of ways to get there by different buses so it would probably be best to look at this website

The 101 gets you into the Birmingham centre from Hockley. I would suggest possibly the number 1 from there but there are other options to you.
Also be aware that buses in central Birmingham generally leave from 2 places Colmore Row and Corporation Street. (Although the number one leaves from Broad Street, just to confuse matters!)
If I was you I'd go 101, bus to Broad Street then catch the 1.....as I think it's the shortest walk to the Priory Club in the end but whatever works for you ! Hope it's not to confusing, just trying to help:confused:

its not complex at all, you can phone the travel line if you need some help. basically you get a bus to the city centre, then a bus from the city centre to the priory club (you have to know where to get off though, ask the driver and he should stop for you!)

Anyway, I'm still in France and will discover Birmingham from next weekend, so I'll have the time to get used to the buses and the metro :lol:

That's what I did last year, it's not a bad walk just remember to take waterproofs or an umbrella or you'll get a soaking from the traffic if it rains :p

When I went last year I walked back to new street station. It took me about 20 minutes. On the way back I walked along a long road then turned left down towards the Raddison hotel and I think I might have went through an underpass as well. Is that the quickest way?

yeah i looked up the buses and those 3 go to or very near sir harry's road, but i've also got the route mapped out to walk and seen as its under 30 mins i think im going to walk.

basically the walk there is straight, you have to come out of the front of new st station go past the carpark and turn right past/under the bullring shopping centre, you walk down the hill and upto the island where you turn first left down bristol road, past bristol st motors and upto the massive junction where mcdonalds is, you go straight on and just continue walking straight on from that point until you get to sir harrys road (easy to miss btw), best to be on the right hand side of the road.

anyway, ive driven the bristol rd many times, and i simply cant beleive its anything under a 40m/1h hour walk, its about a 5-10 minute drive, which makes it about 4 or so miles, which in turn makes walking pace 12 or 13 mph! Maybe its not as far as 4 miles but it does take quite a long while to drive down the bristol road.

i found it easier going down the steps where taxis are to Station St.
find my way to the Roundabout on Holloway Circus and onto Bristol Rd/St
its about 2 miles at most

My Mum and I have managed to get a brand new flat only 8 miles from Edgbaston so we have decided to get up early each morning and walk until we are tired then hop on a bus lol Healthy and conveniant :D

Anyway, I'll be making my usual journey to Birmingham this year - I think this is 9 years in a row. I love this event

I'll be there for Sat & Sun (SF/F). Catching the train and doing my usual walk from 5 ways...I've always preferred that way, but that's just me! Sunday I should be driving because the trains between my city and Birmingham might not be running very well (buses instead), which is problematic for me. So, I don't mind paying £10 for parking...hope I can still pay on the gate for parking...if not, anyone know where I can pay in advance?

On Saturday flight prices were £24 for a return from Glasgow and this morning I put the money in my bank to pay for them and the price has went up to £94. It's too much for me and im gutted, I loved it last year when I went even though I was only there for a day.

How about try and see what train prices are like. If all else fails theres also coaches, megabus or national express.

there's always alot of players around, most of them go watch on outside courts where you'll find Marion eating :o

I like those kind of shots, though they are difficult from behind the server because it doesnt focus so well some time. Im not sure still...lets see. Are there many "stalkers" with cameras in Birmingham, then I would probarbly not bring one, because these people annoyed me so much in Berlin.

if you got a good cam, you can get a great shot of the player on opposite side of net, they are facing you.

Are there any practise courts open to the public on the qualifying week end ?

And if I go there on Wednesday, what kind of tikets are there ? For the Center Court + the smaller courts ?

As far as I'm aware, you buy a ticket and that grants you entry onto Centre Court and all outside courts.

To give you and idea, the venue is a tennis club and as such doesn't have permanent seating arrangements, so the seats you are on are professionally erected scaffolding and fold up plastic seats fitted in. There is next to no covering for spectators anywhere on the grounds.

The outside courts are next to one another, separated only by advertisement banners. Seating for these courts are at the far side on embankments. Seats are fold-ups and you can move them for a better view (providing you're not obstructing someone else's view). There is also viewing room at one base line end of each court, so a lot of the time you see the back of a player close-up and the front of a player at a distance.
When you ask if practice courts are open to the public, do you mean to watch or take part in a spot of practice? If it's the latter, then no you can't practice....if it's the former, yes indeed. The practice courts are adjacent to CC and can be viewed on the embankment next to the courts. You have a great view of the first court, but then players seem to visually shrink as the courts get further away. Seating is usually provided there in the form of fold-up chairs again.

Other than tennis watching, there isn't a lot to keep you occupied; a crepe stand (yum yum), ridiculously expensive burgers, hot dogs etc, a couple of promotional stalls, a tent that sells some branded tennis gear and last year was the lovely chocolate fondue tent.

Wednesday you should get tickets on the gate. I think I went on a Wednesday a couple of years back and there was quite a queue forming but it was probably because Sharapova was there?! Bare in mind though, that from Jelena's victory at Wimbledon last year with her Brit Xdubs partner, the country might have adopted her as one of their own....so might be keen to catch a glimpse of her. So, be on the guard for part-times fans who don't know a thing about tennis.

I've been coming here for about 8 or 9 years and I always love coming back. You can get up close to the players...they're often just hanging around by the outside courts or practice courts, chatting to coaches and other players. It's a great place to see them just laid back and slightly care-free. Over the last few years, the even has got slightly bigger so I wonder how long the close-proximity with players will last.

I hope some of this information is helpful to you. Need to know anything, just ask and I'll do my best.

Can't believe my first post on this forum is telling you where sainsbury is. It is hidden away in a kind of side street called "union street" connecting "Corporation street" and the "high street". I'm sure i've completed your life with that fact now :)

Anyway i can't wait to go tomorrow. So disappointed with the bigger names dropping out but still is great to see the wta tour back in birmingham. Just hope the weather holds out.

Thats the street I stayed on last year the clubs are brilliant 2 out of 3 nights I stayed in Birmingham I stumbled home hammered :lol: And I am staying for a week this time anyone up for clubbing you just let me know :D
