Maybe because Ana, Jelena, and Anna are considerably better than any Asian girl on tour.

Li Na was the closest we got to an Asian player who has the game to compete against the top 10 girls, sadly her 2007 was derailed by injuries.

I just don't see any of the other girls challenging in-form players in the 3RD, 4RD, and QF of slams. Mirza has the power but her serve and movement :help: . Peng Shuai has even worse movement, although a better serve than Sania's. The top Asian young players like YJ Chan and Morita have the games to be top 40, but not much more than that. Ai Sugiyama reached top 10 through amazing defense, court sense, and fitness. I don't see any of the current crop of Asian girls with the same heart and smarts that Ai has demonstrated over the years.

I think Ai is done unfortunately  I think she gets really nervous at Slams... maybe being unseeded will take the pressure off her shoulders?
*shrug* I just hope she retires on a good note :hearts:

YJ maybe one day... hopefully one day!!
Maybe Vania too. Jie? Zi? Don't know, they're not quite at the top of the game yet, you know? To get to SF... you need to be like top 10.

Hsieh!

If she can go out of the qualies, it would already be a big achievement. ^^

Na Li has the best shot, when she is in form, she is really dangerous. With a good draw, she could make it in Wimbledon for example. But I sincerely doubt it would happen. As regards the others, I don't even give them a shot to reach 4th round.

I think that Eggy is just making fun of the fact that Chan is well known for her addiction to 50k challengers, even when she doesn't need to play them.
Still, she wins nearly all of them and it is ridiculous because it is not her level.
Otherwise, I am sure that he understands that Asian girls generally peak much later than all these ball-crushing Russian giants that he loves... who are capable of having big wins at 16-17 years of age. Asian players just aren't like that, they need more time. Eggy knows this, he's just joking I'm sure. ;)

Anyway, who is the idiot that said the most Asian players have no chance of reaching the 2nd round? .... I think that's a bit much. You can really split those who know something about tennis from those who are completely clueless on this board. its amazing.

Interesting thread to be bumped!

It took until post #27 until someone even mentioned Zheng's name, and that wasn't even a prediction. Although to be fair, I don't think anyone saw that great run at wimbledon happening.

I was fully aware of that. But she/he was like talking about it everytime Chan appeared in a thread. It could turn out to be really annoying don't you think? But what I was expecting? Welcome to WTAworld. :worship:

Wow this thread do look kind of creepy in terms of how precise the predictions are. :scared: The Hsieh one, and saying Zheng would make a GS SF sounded just absurd, but they all came out to be true. Maybe my 2010 Chan prediction would be good too.

Why can't they? I really believe that Jie Zheng and Na Li are rising and can definitely get some QF's and even possibly a SF if the draw is good.

I mean you can't say it's impossible when it happened this year. And it's not like Zheng's run at Wimbledon was a complete fluke because she did beat the #1 at the time. Also she did rise 138 places (163 to 25). She is at the top of her game at the right time. :)

TheBoiledEgg hates the Asian players. Whenever an Asian player beats a Russian player, he gives all kinds of excuses for the Russian.

Lol anything can happen on tour. The question was "Do you think," and obviously most people would never think that the Asian girls would reach a Grand Slam SF, including myself, although Jie had a great tournament at Wimbledon and it was great to watch. If they have a decent draw and are playing their all out best then the possibility is always there. Will an Asian girl go a step further and reach a slam final this year? Well this I think is a much more unlikely probability.

W/L 08 07 06 05 04 03 02 01
27-12 QF 1r 3r 2r 4r 1r 4r 4r

I've been watching her at GS tourneys for a few years, but I never expected her to get deep. Who knows... maybe she can take her game to a new level.

On a sidenote, when I was in New York for USO Qualifiers in 2007, I saw Tiantian Sun completely take apart her opponent. She's currently ranked at 275 on Singles, but she's still a teenager. She looked like a tough customer, so she might be worth watching in the future. :secret:

Jie Zheng already made it this year...it will be tough for Asians to make it that far but I know they can..besides there are more Caucasians who play pro tennis that Asians so there a big chance that most players who make it to the R16 were Caucasians or the Williamses. :)
